This clip kinda is a good example of Americans not being educated enough about the world outside their own country. The Americans I've met in Europe we're always kinda overly confident like 'here we Americans are' instead of a bit more modestly learning more about the new cultures and people they were encountering. There is more social welfare in the UK in comparison however it is still bare minimum- 'the dole' is just enough so you can eat and that's about it, and deliberately so as the government don't want people staying on those benefits. You have no quality of life on the dole and hence why some people turn to crime as they want to have more than the bare minimum that the government offer. Also you can't stay on the dole for long they push people into jobs to get them off the books

Most black ppl in the UK identify as "black" before nationality. Although, typical of nowadays, some ppl will try and complicate it. And the area Kano grew up in is majority Asian. That means Indians..Pakistanis..Bengali..Sri Lankans. This largest Muslim borough in the UK.

This thing about black brits identifying with where they are from more than African Americans, which you hear a lot, doesn’t really make sense when you think it through. Yeah, Kano’s mum is from Jamaica, so he can identify with that. But African Americans are “from” America just as much as black Jamaicans are “from” Jamaica. The ancestors of both were brought against their wills from West Africa at the same time and as part of the same (horrific) process. So the difference is that black Americans still live where they are from (unless you go back hundreds of years, but if you do that, Kano’s mum is not “from” Jamaica either), rather than being descended from recent immigrants.

You’re telling lies. A lot of americans seem to think this. But the truth is, even in 1960’s England. Hotels, restaurants and pubs would have signs in the windows saying “No Blacks, no Irish and no dogs”. When we fill in registration forms, it asks if we are black-british, black-african, black-jamaican etc. Black brits have been called black for a very long time.
@NK-vd8xi2 жыл бұрын
@@j6873 I'm British mate.... And no, we identify with our ethnicity/country of origin before our skin colour. Sure, white people were racist to us all in the same way and treated us as a monolith but that doesn't mean we formed one community the way American blacks did.
@j68732 жыл бұрын
@@NK-vd8xi I never said we don't. What I am saying is, it is false to claim we do not describe ourselves, or are described by other brits as being black. A white man on the street is not going to primarily describe you as jamaican or nigerian. He is going to describe you as black. Yes we identify with our roots more than americans, but in Britain, we are black first. That's why Kano said he is Black - british/jamaican. We literally fill in the black tick box on registration forms when signing up for a college, hospital or applying for a new job etc. It is not some recent american import.
@NK-vd8xi2 жыл бұрын
@@j6873 I never said black was an incorrect label, just the primacy of it, the "black first" approach being wrong. In Britain, to white people they may see black first, but when you ask "what's your background" no one ever says "black", they say their ethnic origins/national origins. Ticking a box that says black first might influence you into thinking you're black first, but none of those categories were decided by us people when making it.
