As a resident of Bergen, I'd like to add some alternative fjord excursions that one can do using public transportation: The company Norled (norled.no) runs two services north from Bergen -- one reaches Selje, which is near the isthmus of the Stadt peninsula, and the other instead does a right turn into Sognefjorden, the same fjord system where Flåm is located. Its main destination is Sogndal, but in the tourist season it also calls on Flåm. A company called Rødne (rodne.no) has a short three-hour excusion north from Bergen. If you only have a few hours to spare, this is the one to take, but it is solely for tourists, and does not even dock at its northern destination. Rødne also has a service going south and east from Bergen, to Rosendal. North of Stadt lies another great region, with the fjord Geirangerfjorden, but also the Trollveggen massif (Europe's tallest vertical rock face at over 1200 metres), and the Trollstigen switchback turns, with the city of Ålesund being not far away. This region also has a train service, called Raumabanen, a branch line of Dovrebanen, which is the main line going from Oslo north to Trondheim.

Suggestion: if you really want to enjoy the Flåmsbana and you have a full day try the walk from Myrdal to Flåm (downhill). It’s superb! And you can always take the train in one of the stations on the line. Or you can rent a bicycle in Flåm, take it on the train to Myrdal and ‘mountainbike’ downhill back to the fjord. Been there, done that. Amazing!

Do consider stopping some hours at either Finse or Ustaoset on the train trip between Bergen and Oslo, great places to do some hiking or biking. :)

8:41 Well, we got the freedom to roam here, so you're free to do so. =) Just you know, remember to bring good cloths, extra food, a tent and things like a gas burner. Basically the weather can be unpredictable in the mountains in Norway and even midsummer it's possible to get stuck in a blizzard or other types of extreme weather for a day or two, so you need to be prepared to survive in such a condition. Also, bring a map, compass and ideally some kind of way to get help in the case of an emergency. By the way, respect nature. There's places where there's a serious risk of rock-slides etc.

I went on a school trip there once ( I'm Norwegian ), and we all got the cringeworthy experience you got too 😂 🙈 Huldra is a pretty cool mythological creature though. She's a beautiful woman with a cows tail that she keeps hidden, so that the men she's trying to seduce won't realize that she isn't human. In some stories her back is also like rotting wood. As far as I know it varies whether she's evil or "good if you deserve it" 😉

Ashley, you must stop walking around with your phone held loosely in your hand, one of these days a teenager on a bike or moped will come up behind and snatch it. Those tiles are Terrazzo, a man made product, made from crushed marble mixed with a resin into a block then sliced and polished, Thicker slices are used for flooring.
@rustknuckleirongut81075 жыл бұрын
That doesnt happen much in Norway. Other than in some parts of the capital crime against tourists is almost non existent and a large part of the theft reported by tourists in Oslo are just people trying to cheat their travel insurance.
@tonys16365 жыл бұрын
@@rustknuckleirongut8107 You are lucky in Norway, Cities in other parts of the World, particularly in shopping streets and tourist areas. Visitors have to be careful with phones, wallets and other items of value. London, Paris and Rome can be hotspots for this type of crime. @@tonys1636 The simple tricks I use when traveling the world to not get robbed or have things stolen is to not dress like a tourist, do not use paper maps, no jewelry, do not cheap out on accommodation, never use a suitcase with a brand name or one that is recognizable as expensive, if buying expensive things I carry in a backpack and never take a bag with a logo from the store or I have it delivered to my hotel and I do not get drunk. So far in 25 years of traveling I have had no issues anywhere in the world. The world is not as dangerous as the news would have you think, but a few precautions is never a bad thing.
@tonys16365 жыл бұрын
@@rustknuckleirongut8107 It's not only tourists that fall foul of this, so do the native population. Wearing jewellery is not normally a give away as to wealth unless it's a Cartier piece or a Rolex watch. Most of those thieves are teenagers just looking for a quick buck, phones and purses are easy targets if the owner is distracted in any way.
@rustknuckleirongut81075 жыл бұрын
@@tonys1636 I hear people say stuff like that but they often forget that the odds of getting robbed or having something stolen is about the same as the odds you winning the top prize on a scratch off lottery ticket. Its not something you really need to worry about, just enjoy your travels and dont carry stuff that cant be replaced easily by insurance. Fear will ruin more trips for you than actually getting robbed as a robbery only ruins one trip while fear will ruin them all. (Edited for a spelling mistake)

I'm Norwegian and don't quite get what you are doing here. Is it a review of public transport through tourist routes? You don't do anything on the way, why exactly are you doing this? To look out the windows of the busses and trains? What people normally do, at least the Norwegians is to stop and stay a day or two at one of the mountain cabins, which is free to use for all members of the hiking-assosiation. Or stay in one of the commercial mountain huts for a bit more leisure. And then do some hiking og mountain biking, in winter time skiing. Spending the night in Flåm seems like a very strange thing to do. Usually people do the "Rallarvegen" or the "Royal post route" with bike or hike. Very picturesque routes through the national park. Even some of the cruise tourists do some biking. Takes Flåmsbanen to the top, and bike down again. The train returns the bikes to the top.
@kokilimonke5 жыл бұрын
And if you are interested in spending the nights at the Hiking-associations (DNT) cabins, a membership is about 60 dollars for a years, and you can stay for free at over 500 mountain cabins all around Norway. Even some lighthouses by the sea. So if you plan and is on a cramped budget, you don't need to spend more than 60 dollars for a year of lodging all at beautiful locations. Some is even stocked with some canned or dry food you can buy if you get stuck unexpectedly due to weather conditions.
