I find it strange that someone recommended Flåm as a destination. However, keep in mind that alot of Norwegians do use this as a "launchingpoint" (like you said) to go hiking and disappear into the nature. The right to roam basically means one could sleep pretty much wherever they want. But yeah, most Norwegians just enjoy the scenery and continue to their cabins or destinations. I really do recommend going hiking in that region though, there is amazing scenery and the feeling of "conquering" it by feet is great.

Yeah, I'm not sure what they were expecting. They completely missed the point of traveling to Norway. You don't go to norway to visit cities. I mean, there are some nice towns like Bergen and Trondheim but there are many other European towns you should prioritize over Norwegian towns. You go to Norway to hike and look at nature.

Flåm is really just a tourist village. With no cruise ships and packed with people it is pretty a quiet place to relax and go for walks. Obviously coming from Bergen which is the second largest city in Norway the contrast will be big. A better stopover would probably have been Voss. A trip on the new gondola if it was opened when you passed through. $100 for a room sound pretty normal to me. In Flåm during tourist season I thought it would have been more expensive.

Sorry your wrong when saying "....no cruise ships....". The reality is the opposite. Flåm is THE cruise ship destination. There comes a lot of them there.....

LOL at your comments about Flåm, it is very true that the town has evolved into pretty much a tourist terminal. So take it for what it is, and a great thing to manage expectations of other travellers in that regard. :)

Well. The moment Flåm would open (edit: many .. you get what I'm saying) restaurants and accomodations _just_ for the tourists, it would be another lost town. For Flåm at least. The nature is already being ruined by the huge cruisers and tourists who're not taught to clean up after themselves (in Norway it's common sense _and_ a rule of thumb for _ANY_ hikers to remove _ANY_ trace you've been there - hence the right to roam in the first place). It's horrible. That being said, it's nice to see people are able to enjoy the same nature we do. It's just sad it comes at a cost.

I would not recommend using cash as payment unless you have to as most of the time it’s more expensive if you pay by cash. When you take the buss it’s best to use the Skyss app as it’s cheaper and you have the ticket on your phone and can see exactly how long it’s valid. In Bergen you don’t pay on the bus per ride, when you have a ticket you can use it as much as you like while it’s valid

I live in Norway and I have been to Flåm 3 times. Once we cycled there through Rallarvegen (paths made by the people building the railway), second time to do Flåmsbanen (the small old train that goes back and forth from Flåm to the main railway) and third time we did what you did, boat, bus, train. Flåm isn't the destination, it is the nature around that is spectacular. Also, you missed out on the "viking hall" with Ægir micro brewery? It is a must if you spend the night in Flåm!

Wow, this brings back memories of my one and only visit to Norway - back in 1974 when I was in high school (yes, I'm that old, haha). I was with a large group of other USA high school kids on a whirlwind tour of Europe and we did pretty much that same route (except we did the full one-day version that got us all the way to Oslo - no stop in Flam). But that was one of the highlights of the summer for me - especially the fjord portion and seeing all those waterfalls and tiny towns built into the side of the mountains by the water. So beautiful! The bus ride down to the ferry terminal, however, terrified me! This makes me want to go back and take Mike with me. Plus I can take proper pictures now (back then all I had was a little Kodak Instamatic 104 camera...).

The Norway in a Nutshell tour is all about the scenic journey. The townsite of Flåm is just a glorified transfer point between the ships and the Flåm train, but it is among incredible mountain views. There is a beautiful historic hotel in the town of Flåm that is surrounded by amazing scenery. If you wanted to spend time in a nice Norwegian town you should have spent time in Voss. It has a very nice lakeside town center with plenty shops, restaurants and cafes while bring surrounded by mountains.

FYI, the railway company NSB recently changed its name to Vy. Name changes of household names are tough, so you might hear a lot of people still refering to Vy as NSB. But NSB = Vy.

If you want to see a real Norweigian town, come to Øvre Årdal in Sogn og Fjordane:) Make sure you travel there on a weekday or on a Saturday because it is pretty dead on Sundays hahahah.

Well, actually Flåm has as around 300 inhabitants. Last time I was there I saw a lot more than 2 houses. But whatever. You contradict yourself... yeah... one can call it a total collapse of logic.... Here comes tourists from all over the world - including you - to Norway to see the wild and unspoiled nature. Then you go out there and say that you don't recommend people to come there because there are no people living there. ....What the heck....??? What do you expect.....??? Is this ignorance in a nutshell? You obviously don't understand what wild and unspoiled nature means...... Hint: There are no people living out there - it's just the nature that does it's own things..... This is not a zoo, or some Central Park in New York..... So this was the first and last time for me on this channel....

There’s literally about 500 people living in Flåm, and they do not live by the port. 😆 They live behind the small hill a short walk from the ”town” centre. If you follow the fjord a bit further into the valley you get there. There’s also a good hike to Brekkefossen waterfall on that route. The Stegastein viewpoint is another thing to do nearby if you want more of those winding roads. I’m glad we didn’t take the bus on our trip... omg those steep and winding roads. 😳 Another alternative route that also sort of is Norway in a nutshell that we took is Oslo-Myrdal and Myrdal-Flåm with train (vy.no to book it ”diy”) and then Flåm-Bergen with Norled boats (norled.no). And back to Oslo by train all the way from Bergen.

Karin Much better way to go about it. When you’re first on the train from Bergen it’s so much easier to take it directly to Myrdal and take the Myrdal to Flåm train and then the ferry from Flåm to Bergen. All in one day. It won’t cost as much either, plus Getting on and off train busses and ferries with luggage is exhausting... so I would rather store the luggage at the train station in Bergen or at the hotel you stayed at etc.

I've been with you almost since the beginning of your travels. It tickles me to see how you've evolved as people and as travelers. Where a couple of years ago, the bus ride and ferry ride would have evoked a non-stop series of, "oh WOW!", now it's more like, "What can we share with the viewers about traveling here?" That's ok though. I was sitting here in a sweltering heat index of 109F, sighing out, "Oh WOW!!" for all of us.

How neat that you are doing just about the exact trip around Norway that I did a few years ago. Including the modes of transportation! Nostalgia hit me big time!! Maybe I went when there was less people, but I had a different experience in Flåm. The town's tranquillity and taking a boat through the breath taking fjords is still one of my favorite memories of the entire trip. I agree that there's basically nothing nearby...but what an amazing place to just stop for a day (definitely don't need longer than that) and sit in peace with such gorgeous surroundings.

US bank cards are denied by a lot of vendors because of the high amount of banking fraud in the US. As American banks adopt safer and more secure card technologies, you'll start to see things becoming available.

Flåm isn't the center of the world, thats true. But it has a bit more to offer. There is a small brewery that you can visit. There is also a restaurant that serves nice food. Anyway, as you said, Flåm is a starting point for further excursions, like the train up the mountain to Myrdal. You can then use the train to go to Oslo or Bergen

Great video. So much for my view that Norway is remote and largely unvisited apart from workers in the oil industry (due to the cost of living). Instead it looks a bit like Venice (beautiful but crowded with tourists). Hopefully if you return to Norway, try going to the less popular parts - like visiting the northern prefectures of Japan.

We liked Flam but it is just a beautiful natural harbour with tourist shop and cafe not somewhere to make a special trip too. We stopped there on a cruise ship and loved the view but headed out to the twin waterfalls and a mountain hotel with stunning views. We went in May much less crowded.

I work with tourism locally in Bergen and I was interested to see if you have actually found a hack to this very popular tour. Apparently you did not. Unless you have this eurorail ticket as you two did, buying the public transportation separately will be more expensive than buying the nutshell tour as a package. The difference is not much, but it is not convenient at all (no guarantee of having a spot in the boat for example). You were sitting in Gudvangen saying that there is nothing to do there. About 200 meters away from where you sat you could find the best viking village in the country! www.vikingvalley.no And yes, Flåm is 100% a place for tourists. Nice hikes and activities as you mentioned, but nothing like a tipical Norwegian village. Paying 100 usd for a double room in high season is not bad at all given the conditions.

Oh yeah, this is pretty much the beat I worked, Voss, tvindefoss, stalheim, gudvangen, only guided the boat around the aurlandsfjord only a few times though, ( the alternative is through some loooong tunnels )

Wow! Still, Norway isn’t allowing you to use your US bank account. I 1st went to Norway 5 years ago. The website would start off in English, but the pay portion was in Norwegian. I called my bank, and the transaction never reached my bank. I couldn’t buy my train until I got to Norway, and the train station. The problem, I had to pay more since I couldn’t get the early booking discounts. Still, it was beautiful. I went from Oslo to Trondheim by train.

Some claim that it works with debit cards but it's been hit or miss for us.

WAY AWAY Neither worked. I assume it’s to give Norwegians an advantage over tourists. Once I got there, my Norwegian friends would do the transactions in Norwegian and pay for me. I’m lucky! Last year, I noticed more websites had English translations, but I couldn’t get money out of 1 ATM. Norway is great, but you have to travel there in the old school, be prepared way. Always have enough cash! It’s not Sweden.

@@Nubianette Its becasue of the low security on the US cards. Have a new card with a chip and your pin to it. This way you avoid 80% of the problems. Then in Norway Have Visa as the first card then Mastercard, Cards like American Express is not recomended as your only card. But you can still get in to trouble so cash is not a bad thing. I tried 1 atm it was only for Visa I had Mastercard. if your remote you can still get in to trouble if they have a bad connection to the server. It can also be something so easy as there are dust on your chip.

Seems to be the case in most of Scandinavia. When I lived in Sweden I ended up having to open a bank account linked to a temporary personal number. Seems like the payment systems are only compatible with Scandinavian based cards.
