Honestly I feel mechanically the difference between late purple ranks (on some characters) and top ranks is small but the game IQ difference is massive. The exceptions being cheese characters like Kuma, Xiaoyu (at lower ranks) Yoshi etc. characters people don’t know how to play against can get high rank much easier.

It's not dumb. I was in the exact same position as you when Tekken 8 came out, also picked Kazuya. As long as you pay attention to what you're doing and what you need to learn, you'll progress nicely.
