This is the first time I’ve ever seen/heard anyone talk about this and I had no idea it had a name or was something that could be fixed by using less product or applying a base layer. Thank you so much for this video. These type of videos that teach us to troubleshoot our own issues are so valuable.

Mine did it last night while conditioning!!! I checked the ingredients and Glycerin was the 3rd ingredient, so I am thinking that might be causing flash drying for me. I am going to find a glycerin free conditioner and try that on my next wash day. Curly hair is so frustrating, but I am happy that I am finally starting to figure out what my hair does/doesn't like.

For anyone else with hair that hates aloe and glycerin, I thought I'd post the products I've been able to find that don't contain either, since they are few and far between. I couldn't figure out why I was having more and more wet frizz the longer I did CG. Thanks to this video, I realised my hair doesn't like aloe and glycerin -- and possibly cocamidopropyl betaine (derived from coconut oil), which is why I was getting a ton of wet frizz. As these 3 ingredients are in almost EVERYTHING, it's been very difficult to find good products. I've been using Inahsi's Mint Shampoo (glycerin and aloe), Jessicurl's Deep Conditioner, Aloeba conditioner and both Giovanni's Tea Tree shampoo and gel -- all have aloe! Ecoslay Marmalade? Aloe. No WONDER I was having wet frizz. So far, the only conditioner I've found that are suitable for wavy hair that don't have glycerin, aloe, or cocomidopropyl betaine is Kinky Curly's Knot Today. I'm going to try it next and hope for the best. As a sulfate-free shampoo, Kinky Curly's Come Clean doesn't have glycerin or aloe, though it DOES have cocomidopropyl betaine but it's the 7th ingredient so maybe not a problem. Likewise, Jessicurl's Gentle Lather misses out glycerin and aloe but does have cocomidopropyl betaine as its 3rd ingredient :( For gel, Jessicurl's Spiralicious Gel doesn't have any of these three troublesome ingredients. For folks in the UK, Faith In Nature's Tea Tree or Seaweed & Citrus, or Jojoba Shampoos are all excellent clarifying shampoos without these three ingredients. They have ammonium laureth sulfate, so not CG-approved, but I find they work great for clarifying. The search goes on...

See, as I understand it, flash drying happens say for me it's kinky curly custard, I don't have to use much, but when I then go to diffuse my hair it's like the moisture has been zapped in a flash from my hair, aka, flash drying. It's as if the moisture disappears in aflash. This happens only when I use a certain 2or 3products, and it goes straw like too.

I'm going to assume flash drying occurs with both shampoo and conditioners. I have had wet friz for almost a year then one day I switched up shampoo and conditioner and it completely went away... Oh my..I’ve been chemically straightening for years. A few months ago i decided to go natural, so i cut off my straightened ends and was left with chin length virgin hair. I do the whole no sulphates or silicones, sleep on satin pillowcases, wear satin hats and only use pure aloe gel and coco/macadamia oils as leave ins..While my hair feels soft, it’s soooo floofy, looks dry and there are barely any waves , just a poofy mess w some kinks here and there 🥺 I came across your channel a few days ago while researching CG methods and have been binge watching..earlier I tried out the squish to condish but only found this video while waiting for my hair to air dry. My hair did that flash drying thing when i used aloe gel as leave in 😭 I just washed my hair again and used less aloe gel..there’s some wet frizz but for once i have clumps instead of stringy noodles and I see what looks like actual waves! Plopping now and ordering some zotos curl cream and shea moisture leave in from amazon 😂 going to keep practicing this method till i perfect it. I finally feel like i can do something about my hair

Uncle Funky's Curl Stimulator gives me more clumps and Jessicurl Spiralicious gives me better hold, but if I use one on top of the other, my 2b waves disappear by the second day! Wow this was so helpful! I wish I had known more about how my hair should feel much earlier in my journey. I’ve been struggling with flash drying happening intermittently but have a hard time predicting it. I definitely think you’re spot on with a lot of your tips! Having a base of moisture for sure reduces it for me, I’m just always afraid I’m going to weigh down my fine low porosity hair. I would have assumed your hair loved bounce curl gel due to the protein! Your theory on it wanting to just soak it up so fast is so interesting! I’m curious if you already had a lot of protein in your hair if the gel would still make your hair flash dry. I do think I’ve reached a point where my hair is finally moisturized and needs a bit of protein but I’m not sure the best part of my routine to introduce it. Anyway, your hair is so gorgeous and shiny and your videos are always so informative. 💜

Mine does with a lot of things too, so frustrating! I'd pretty much given up on trying new products but now I have some renewed hope. My hair hates glycerin and it's so hard to find any products without it where I live. Hope you find something that works for you!

OHHHHH! Okay. Yea, the IGK Sold Out hair primer for curly hair DEFINITELY causes flash drying on my hair and I feel like my curls are more like waves when I spray it in. Today is my wash day and I’m going to skip the primer & see the difference. Thanks for this!!!👍😊

Thanks sooo much for all your videos, especially this one... flash drying happens a lot mo me (still transitioning, and figuring out...) but you finally solved a bit of the mystery to me! For me its always the gel that causes it.... (and I hate how my hair turns out when it happens... but now I know how to fix it ;-)) What also happened to me is just the opposite... don't know how that would be called. As in: I apply a product to soaking wet hair and the hair seems tu suck up all the water and is halfway dry in a flash. I like when that happens because it makes my hair feel so jucy... but is it actually a good thing? Does it damage the hair? And what kind of products do I need to look for to cause it?

So my hair does feel kind of juicy when I add the uncle funkys daughter to it. I’m not sure if it’s the same thing you are describing though. 🤔

@@SwavyCurlyCourtney I'll have a look. Just wanted to know which 2 type were you at the beginning. I used to have curly hair but after my tumors, my hair has changed a lot. It's not perfectly Japanese straight, it's wavy with a lot of static and frizz. And it's very, very long, as you can see in my pic. I don't think i could use the CGM on it. It will be so tangled, lol

Yes, it could be the conditioner. Some contain a good bit of protein, protein mimics, and aloe. Rinsing out the shampoo and fully cleaning off the stylers that were in your hair is necessary too.

Okay this video has inspired me to keep trying! I have been experiencing this flash drying thing for several, several months and I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting really good clumps like I did in the beginning on my journey. I have just felt resigned to just always having frizzy hair. But now I'm going to keep trying and see if I can narrow down which product is causing it. I just want my spirals back!! :)

I used the dippity do girls with curls mousse and gelee today, trying out the mousse, gel, mousse technique (from your not your mothers video) and I had flash drying for the first time since I started the CGM. I've used the gelee alone before and had no issue, but today when I applied the gelee after the mousse it flash dried!!🤷🏻‍♀️ But my end result was spectacular in my book, probably 3rd best hair day, lol! Not sure what caused the flash drying but next time I might try a different gel with this mousse.

@Swavy Curly Courtney - THANK YOU!! I'm so glad I found this vid! My hair loves protein...... but I found out (too late) it also HATES aloe! I say 'too late' bc I recently invested in pricey "clean" products (natural, vegan, etc) and most of them have *aloe*... now I constantly experience flashdrying! 🤦‍♀️ BUT, thanks to you, dear friend, I won't end up wasting money AND products! Thank God - phew! 😮 Instead I'll apply a cream first, then LESS aloe-y product. 🙌👏 What would all us curly girlies do without you!? 🤟😁👍💜

So I’m not sure I fully realized that was flash drying. I thought it was webbing, might be the same thing though. Anyway my hair does that with protein. Like instantly. And the Bounce Curl gel it was really bad, which I deduced was the combo of protein and glycerin.

This exact product does the same to my hair! There is a lot of protein in that product. To get a balance I use : 1/4 tsp bounce curl 1/2 Blueberry Bliss. Perfect pattern I have mid back, colored high porosity fine 2/C 3/A hair Three ingredients that flash dry my hair : Aloe Flaxseed Coconut oil My hair will turn to straw Your video was great! Most gals don't focus on the tactile part of what ingredients do to one's hair. Just by being aware , people will almost immediately realize what their hair needs in the protein/moisture ratio. Watching the sister videos, and this one helped. For my hair is a combo of your two hair types. Well done! I too am a research fanatic . My journey is 4 years at present

Courtney, first of all, you are so darn adorable, and your hair is awesome! :) Secondly, your videos have been ENORMOUSLY helpful as I’m just starting the curly girl process, so thank you!! I was so excited to try Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic after all the amazing reviews I read, and two seemingly opposite things happened: 1) Flash drying (which I had no idea what was going on until your video, which explains it perfectly - my hair looked identical to yours when you added the first product), but 2) Ended up giving me many more curls than I’ve been able to get previously in the end. So, after watching your video, I’m going to reduce the amount of Uncle Funky’s by half (I used like a small puddle-full!) and see if that doesn’t resolve the flash drying issue. Thanks so much, and keep up the great videos!! :)

This was so informative. I'm very new to the CG method. I was about to DM you on Instagram to get advice. I have been using a leave in by Glow Lab. It made my hair feel almost dry even though it was wet. My hair was so limp. Today I didn't use it, I used a different leave in and it was fabulous. I also stumbled across this post and I realised that the Glow Lab leave in was causing flash drying :) Thanks!!

Most of the Innersense stylers, my diy flaxseed gel when I added aloe and xantham gum, and most especially the Herbal Essences berry mouse all make my hair flash dry. I will still use the Innersense ones but I can't use several layered or many of them. Wet frizz is pretty common for me and I'm ok with it at this point, but the dry rustling leaves hair I get from a bad case of flash drying is a big nope.

I think my hair likes/is okay with glycerin, but I'm wondering if aloe is a problem. I used the Knot Today, and my hair has never felt as slimy/seaweedy, so clearly my hair loved that. I have some Jessicurl samples, which are aloe free, so I'm excited to experiment.
