fun fact: the Mach 20 speed that barry needs to reach in season 7 would be around 20 thousand miles per hour. Barry moved faster than a bolt of lightening in season 1. Thunderbolts travel at around 270 thousand miles per hour. So much for becoming faster each season.

So how can anything going a third of the speed the earth is already moving, suddenly destroy the world? There is an easy fix too, just gonna pull this out of my ass: "Barry needs to ACCELERATE (not be a certain speed) at a certain rate to travel through time, but in this specific instance he would have to accelerate so fast that his atomic structure would just disintegrate, which the speedforce (canonically) prevents. But to prevent him from disintegrating from accelerating SO fast, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The energy the speedforce needs to counteract the acceleration killing him, it takes by directly terminating atoms into pure energy. The speedforce can handle this at normal acceleration, because it uses the energy instantaneously, so there isn't any explosion or some such. I'm definitely one of those "thanks for saving me from wanting to watch this" fans. Flash is one of my alltime favorite characters. Always tied with Green Lantern for my favorite super hero. I will say despite the shows downfalls I do think Grant Gustin has done a hell of a job wearing the many suits, not looking too goofy, and capturing the vibe I get from Barry Allen. I'm weird and wish they made him go blonde but that's just a style thing. Great video as always man

i think part of the fandom reason for loving thawne so much is love for other versions of the character being able to bleed into the arrowverse version thanks to his time travel origin. how they managed to make his backstory lamer than even the comics is impressive. the comic backstory is, to summarize: thawne is from the distant future where the flash is a world famous hero in history. he worked at the flash museum and was the biggest fanboy the flash ever had. he fanboyed so hard he managed to figure out the flash's real identity through historical documents, and was as such able to figure out how he got his speed and replicate the procedure. the flash also ended up in the future at one point and gave him some hero advice, which slived in his head rent-free. he immediately made a suit resembling the kid flashes of the past and tried to be a hero, and went back in time to show off how good of a hero he's being, only to learn that not only was there already a kid flash in that era, not only did that kid flash get the same advice he once did in front of him, but the flash of that era had an arch-nemesis; himself. his mentality shattered upon this revelation, and he decided if he was destined to be the flash's worst enemy, he would do his best to live up to that title. he knew he couldn't kill the flash without erasing himself, so he set out to make barry's life as much of a hell as he could, starting with the death of barry's mother. as far as how he's immune to death, that too is tied to the comics. thanks to time travel shenanigans, he ended up as a living paradox, basically exempt from the idea of cause and effect. (he also became capable of killing barry without harming himself because of this if i recall, but nothing comes of it). he doesn't die because even if he dies, he can just keep going from a different point in his own personal timeline. if they want to keep thawne around, you'd think they would just introduce this concept into the arrowverse at some point. heck, make it a version of thawne that's sorta kinda the comics thawne, with this living paradox ability, and still a very willing antagonist just because it means he gets to continue making life hell for a barry allen.

7:04 what i think it means is that no matter what changes you make to the timeline a preservation or copy of yourself will always exist just to preserve the timeline. basically if you go back in time and kill your own grandpa your erased from the timeline except for the point in your life when you were back in time to kill your own grandpa. that is a timeline remnant the version of you that went back in time that cannot really be erased because it has to carry out the action to be erased so it can be erased everywhere else. the reason why thawne is able to come back is because the negative speedforce makes him immune to changes in the timeline he literally cannot be erased from existance from what has been said in essence he is a living paradox. however this only explains why he is still alive

A time remnant is a version of a time traveler from a version of history that has been rewritten. It's like playing a game, and you keep saving the game. Then a character from an older save file comes into the save you're playing now. 27:33 It's also shown that non speedsters (like cicada) will get erased from the timeline, the only factor is if they're using the speedforce rather than the temporal zone.

I realy realy wished flash had pulled a concept from doctor who. Have thawne be the main villain of season 1 and he died as normal and then every season after that have him pop up, but its from before he became hr whells, show him falling into more and more hate but in reverse and then keep the final season having it be the point of him finding out who barry is like youd see the payoff long before the build up but well in advance. What if also barry goes to the 25th century for an episode or more and hint that a kid in the story is thawne without saying it, showing that barry inspired him and that drove him to become the man he does later and then you can follow thing. Its kinda like river song from dr who which was seeing her story in reverse with her first appearance being her death and each time after its before. So it keeps going back and back

One thing that they could have, and should have, done with the good-thawne character was have him accept that he needs to become a conduit for the negative speed force in order to help barry or some such, and then decide to channel his hate as a tool for good. Sort of like how the red lantern core is fueled by hate and punishes people who they think are deserving, have "good" Thawne learn about his hate-boner for Barry, decide "yeah actually, I was just in the wrong, Barry is fine, but, I do still need super speed if I'm going to help anyone, so I have to face the roid rage if we have any chance of success", and then become some time-hopping vigilante. Barry can't ever stop him because he isn't strong enough, and God-Thawne now watches over the timeline, a being of pure divine-rage, trying to do good with the forces of evil that were forced upon him and eternally tugging to corrupt him. I still think after that he should have stepped away from the Flash, but he could have made an interesting presence in the other Arrowverse shows as an almost mythical being, representing both the worst and best of humanity.

this probably wouldn't fix *everything,* but Legends of Tomorrow did open the door for a possible explanation for how Thawne could still be around despite being erased. you see, the Reverse Flash that got erased was Reverse Flash from the ORIGINAL timeline where the villains *won.* and after that timeline's Legends traveled back to change things, he went after them himself, gathered the villains of THAT timeline, and then sent them after the Legends before running off to generate time remnants. however, we never see the Reverse Flash of that timeline. presumably, that version of Thawne getting erased wouldn't result in the *other* Thawne getting erased as well, since *that* Thawne exists from a period BEFORE the Thawne that got erased-unless the erasure works *backwards* somehow, which I seriously doubt. all this to say that they could have had it so that the remaining Thawne from the new Legends timeline was the Thawne going around wreaking havoc from that point forward. again, wouldn't have fixed everything, but it would have made significantly greater sense than what the "showrunners" came up with.

Think about it this way rq: Plot holes are caused through the show due to the fact that it is forced to connect to all other shows in the arrowverse and still try to make time travel make sense. The show degraded as more shows were started, thus sucking the budget away. Now after cw's "red wedding" and many shows being cancelled, season 8 has shown that the budget has started coming back, but its still a work in progress. This video is very good. Great points, VERY fair criticism, but regarding the Thawne part: Yes, he is a paradox, because his whole character is about being a LIVING paradox. He can't be erased from existence, he'll just keep coming back over and over again because he has time traveled so much in so many ways that he just exists somewhere in the timeline because he is MEANT to be a paradox. Obviously it's stupid but that's just how it is in the comics so not much they could've done there. Also regarding Thawne's origin: It's just quickly explained, but it's deeper than that. Thawne wanted to be like The Flash, but he started things like fires and such HIMSELF so he could save people from them to make him seem like the hero (kinda like Syndrome from The Incredibles), but it's not that Barry got there first that set him off, it's that he traveled in time and he saw his own fate (him becoming The Reverse Flash), that made him go basically insane, but Barry erased his memories. After some time, he lets Thawne tag along and learn how to be a hero alongside him, and shares some words with him (every second is a gift). Thawne decides to travel back in time (yet again), and he notices Barry told those exact same words to Wally West in his graduation, which made him mad because he thought Barry was replacing him and that Barry didn't really care about him, so his hero basically being dead to him and feeling betrayed, he got filled with rage and got his memories back, so he decided to become everything OPPOSITE to the Flash: The Reverse Flash.

The worst part of all the problems with Thawne in my mind is that there's already material that solves all the issues the show's version has, its the comics the show is fucking based on. In the comics Thawne uses the speedforce to make himself into an entity that exists outside of time, a "living paradox" as he puts it, immune to any changes in the time stream. The writers had a solution to keep Thawne as a villain despite being repeatedly erased fucking spoon-fed to them and they were to stupid to see it. All the ridiculous and non-sensical elements of the show are symptoms of lazy writing, if anyone with a passion for something other than money made it onto that writing team the quality of the show would reflect that, but it clearly doesn't.

Let me explain how Thawne is still alive, it’s not super complicated just explained poorly- Time traveler from the year 2000 travels to 2010 and finds out that in HIS future, he travels back to the year 2000 and continues his life and then in 2008 he gets erased from the timeline. But he hasn’t gone back to the year 2000 yet, so until he does, his future is essentially infinite so long as he never gets sent back to the year 2000(or 2008 to speed things up technically) to fulfill his position in the timeline in 2008 and THEN get erased. Hope that made it easier- Basically, Go forward in time, and find out that if you go back in time to where you come from, you get erased forever because the version of you from the past is actually the version of you from your relative future.

Thawne's ability to negate being erased from existence stems from the comics where he is a living paradox basically making him immune to any timeline changes he or anyone causes to himself. Now the issue is, if you didn't know this then thawne existing past season one makes no form of sense and the way the show tries to handle it only makes it more confusing.

They’re really having fun writing such random and yet still somehow connected plots even when it makes no sense, they aren’t taking it seriously at all and it shows. Flash tries to be serious but fails. Also legends straight up tells us the characters are the least important people rip could find, they aren’t special really, not smart not really anything other than disposable. So when we see them mess up it’s expected and doesn’t require much to believe. It’s had it moments of being terrible but generally it’s enjoyably bad.

His motivation in the reveal isn't even accurate. In the comics he used to idolize Barry and went back in time to meet his idol after doing a bunch of very illegal shit to get his powers. After going through all of these loops to make it happen, he learns that he becomes his arch nemesis and it drives him insane. But his reason for not killing Barry and killing his mother instead was because he knows that if he does HE WON'T FUCKING EXIST. That's why he goes out of his way to ruin Barry's life, because he felt cheated by his hero and time itself. This whole, "I want to be faster so I can save more people," thing is original to the show and stupid. I don't know how/why they messed up such an easy motivation for the sake of being different from the comics
