SURPRISE!
Two years ago (January 2020) I made the last trip to Staten Island to visit my friend Keith DeFazio of New Level Auto before he moved to North Carolina for a new job.
/ onboardtech333kmd
This time we're diagnosing Keith's very own 2005 GMC Canyon 4x4 which he bought for $500.
Truck runs fine, until you try to accelerate hard or go up a hill. Then the engine SHUTS OFF, but restarts own after you release the gas pedal. WEIRD!!
Now it's January 2022, and the poor GMC Canyon is still NOT FIXED, and also blew a brake line :(
I'm heading down to North Carolina with a truck full of tools and an eBay ECM to help Keith get the Colorado back on the road :)
Stay tuned for the GMC Canyon REPAIRS in Part 2, and then:
*****LIVE STREAM THURSDAY, JANUARY 27th at 6PM!!!!******
Enjoy!
Ivan

I had a brand new 1986 Mazda 323 that would shut off while driving full speed in traffic. Fortunately, it was manual so I could shift into neutral on the fly and restart without getting killed by traffic. Finally, fixed by a TSB on some missing ground to the PCM. Dealer was clueless up till then.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I was thinking put a scope on the bus to see what's going on with no comm. Comm between TAC and PCM is it's own bus. Check 5v ref at TPS. I had a 99 Dakota that died in hot weather, started back up in about a minute. 5v to TPS was gone. I think the voltage regulator in the PCM was going into thermal shutdown -fairly common on dodge. Boneyard PCM fixed it, but it doesn't have a separate TAC. ....2 years later, this is beginning to sound like me now.

Can't wait for the conclusion. The only other thing I would've checked before calling the ECM is pin fitment at the ECM on those powers, ground, and cmp/ckp signals.
@jovangrbic97
@jovangrbic97 2 жыл бұрын
Has to be a broken solder connection power pin on the connector board, and the sudden acceleration jerks the pins to lose contact momentarily, the PCM 'reboots' which takes a moment then goes back to running, that way your scope powers and grounds would still look fine, but the PCM would be losing main power. Probably the hot at all times battery connected power pin. Even though it has multiple power inputs, one powers the main backbone which causes it to turn off.

Hi. First of all, I love your methodical way of diagnostics. Being a train technician myself I'm still trying to be as methodical as possible, just because of the sheer size of a train. I had a similar problem with my Tiger 955 motorcycle. After a cold start, full throttle would result in engine stal for a second and come back alive again. Didn't put much thought in it. But once on a hot day i had a crank no start. Intermittently the cooling fan wouldn't turn on, causing a overheating condition which made the ECM block a start. After carefull deduction I exchanged the ECM, because that was the only part of the fan controlside I couldn't guaranty to be good. Guess what, no fix! After studying the wiring diagram again I concluded that the intermittent stall and fan operation could be symptoms of the same problem. It was a power relay. Just like Keith suggested at the 14:48 mark. Cleaning the relay russian style and no parts required fix. Keep up the excellent video's. Best regards from the Netherlands

Reminds me of my own 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7L V8. The PCM was narcoleptic JUST like this. We checked cam sensor, crank sensor, anything that could pull down the 5V REF, and it was all fine. In the end, just a bad PCM, as it was positioned too close to the right exhaust manifold, and was basically barbequed. (Thanks, Chrysler!)

This is a good one.. I had a very similar issue on a 99 chrysler 3.5L. The only differences were the length of cut-out time, and when the pcm came back to life the CEL came on momentarily (just like when you first turn the key on). The engine cut-out time was usually around one second or less. Anyway, it was in fact the PCM. A used one completely fixed the problem.

wife's interpid would do the same thing only it set a cam sensor code. ended up being an in harness splice that broke on the v feed to the cam sensor. you could ride around all day until it was warm and you put your foot in it. only found it by moving the harness loom just the right way. appearantly the same way as the engine torqued. it load tested and volt dropped ok.

The conclusion ought to be interesting! I've had a couple cars with electrical issues that were extremely intermittent. One car malfunctioned only once in the 5 years I owned it, and the other malfunctioned only twice in the 13 years I owned it. Some issues, you just can't find - but when you can make it malfunction, maybe there's a chance! When you shorted out the 12V on the cam sensor, maybe it needed a heavier current draw? The other thing I was thinking is that when scoping the ignition and accessory inputs, there was a connector between the test point and the PCM. And maybe the test done by switching the ignition off and on wasn't quite representative of losing the input to the PCM because more than one contact was being lost, as opposed to losing power thru only one with the other functions being maintained.

Fascinating case Ivan. looking forward to the conclusion. Would there be any diagnostic value in measuring the current that the pcm uses on the power supply wires? I wonder if there is a change when the pcm fails? You said "overloading"...so that got me thinking. Is not something I ever tried myself, but that is now going on my list of things to measure on my own car to get a baseline.
