I think it is also implied that Selina was hinting towards Shreck that she'll keep her mouth shut, for now at least, but also displaying to him that she's not the same girl he pushed out through the window.

@Paraprax Жыл бұрын
Well said. The "boring, grown-ups talking" scenes from childhood faves becoming the most scintillating scenes in a film during adult rewatches is honestly one of the finer things in life. 'The Mask' is another great example of this - as I kid I was there for the cartoonish mania of the actual Mask-wearing sequences; as an adult, everything Carrey and cast do in their regular interactions is the mesmerizing bit.

Same. As a child I was always in it for the action. The explosions. The good guy beating up the bad guy. Now as an adult, it's the world building and the character development that does it for me. Probably why I don't seem to enjoy as many recent movies as I do the older ones.

I love how Bruce was genuinely dazzled by Selina. Being who he is, he knows how to put up a persona and self control his nerves, but when he meets her, he’s tripping over his words and can’t take his eyes off of her. That’s rare for him. In costume, they are their true form and drawn, but even when they are out of costume, their true selves still come out. That’s why, for me, Selina is the best love for Bruce there is. Well done Burton.
@luckyDancer10024 күн бұрын
Selina was definitely a better fit for Bruce. Vikki is who he wanted to want because she brought normalcy into his life, but Selina is just as wild and unpredictable as Bruce. She understands the duality of darkness and light, even if she leans into the dark more.

I loved seeing Bruce the business man. Too many films make him out to be an idiot with the playboy persona. C'mon, people, he has to keep it realistic. Anyone who cared to look up his college transcripts, and the media would, would know he wasn't an idiot in the slightest. Bruce dated around a lot in public, true, but tried to appear respectable and worked as Bruce Wayne to employ as many as he could, funding dozens of charities that he founded and was a known philanthropist. He needed to be taken seriously in the business world, as well as juggle being seen as an active bachelor without shaming the Wayne name, but otherwise did his best to seem normal, not as a spoiled kid.

I love how flustered Bruce is seeing her with a completely different demeanor. Contrasted with her former self flustered when Batman saved her life. I love how this movie developed Selina Kyle and gave us an insight into her life before she became Catwoman. It makes sense that she is fearless now because the most powerful man in Gotham tried to murder her and she survived. I love how this movie points out that social status does not solve the problem of lonliness. Bruce is wealthy and Selina is low status "assistant" yet they both need each other and clearly enjoy being together. I think that is the message of the movie.

One thing I noticed about this movie Bruce is so impressed by Selina he doesn't even notice how weird she really is Max Shreck is so self centered, when he finds out Selina is Catwoman the first thing he does is saying "you're fired", and can't even see that the reason Bruce Wayne is dressed as Batman is because he is Batman The people of Gotham don't seem to notice there's something wrong with the Penguin Bruce and Selina take a long time to figure out who they are The Penguin actually thought Catwoman liked him The christmas tree girl actually thought the Penguin was a casting agent In general everyone in this movie is so self-involved they don't seem to understand what's going on around them and who the people they have around are, everyone sees everyone else through their own point of view. It's a very weird movie but it seems that no one notices how weird everything around them is.

@@JH-qy8no To add to that, it feels like this movie is happening inside a snow globe and everyone is some miniature character inside of it. It's dramatic cause it's like watching a bunch of puppets trying to be human and failing and even though there's a plot it feels like the movie is stuck in time in a way, especially since it's not clear what year it is in Gotham since the set designs and costumes are not from any particular decade. The characters also feel stuck in time cause they don't seem able to change. Penguin is forced to change but goes back to being his old self, Max Schreck in the ending still acts as if he's still inside his office at the start of the movie, Bruce always acts bamboozled, and Catwoman which is the only character that really changes basically self-destroys. @@LarryHazard Yeah, I really think this movie is about Bruce and Selina's relationship at it's core. I see it as a dark Christmas romance story set in a sess pool city. And Keaton's version of Bruce Wayne has grown on me. He asks Selina out like a regular guy and not like some hot shot billionaire playboy would. He is the most humble Bruce Wayne on the big screen. You can tell he is a little nervous talking to Selina and he's not trying to hide that. I like when she says "girlfriend?" and he nervously says "sure!" And he says "oh, you mean do I." As I guy I can totally relate to that scene.

One thing I like about Selina’s character arc is she’s a shy, good-doer type before Shrek tries to murder her. Then she somehow survives, and realizes she has nothing to show for taking Shrek’s crap all those years. She’s an assistant living in a crummy apartment, and has no discernible life outside of work. She gets really angry, and channels that all into her alter ego. Not unlike Bruce, who channels all his rage and pain into Batman. Finding someone who’s like him, and vice versa, causes this immediate attraction.

What i loved more about Batman Returns than the first one was the difference in character development for Bruce Wayne, in the first one Bruce rarely ever left Wayne Manor apart from going to the alleyway where his parents were murdered but showed very little personality but in Returns especially this scene, we got to see him intereact more in public with people and we also got to see the billionaire businessman side that we all know him for. I was never a fan of him always being portrayed as an idiotic spoilt rich brat who wasn't very bright, i always liked seeing him as a no nonsense type of guy who was always trying to help the citizens of Gotham and giving back to the city. It's really cool to see Bruce one minute talk straight with Max but then the next second turns the goofy guy dial a bit when Selina Kyle walks in the room to divert suspicion that he might know too much thus possibly giving his Batman identity away to everyone. Michael Keaton done a wonderful job in this movie showing different sides and layers to the character.
@drlee22 жыл бұрын
I think a problem with the playboy act is that we don't get the genuine emotions, reactions and feelings of the character. With Keaton's version of Bruce, I like that he was always just who he was in public, yet somehow he played it in a way where no one would remotely suspect he could be Batman. He managed to be interesting as both Bruce and Batman without needing to resort to over the top acting to distinguish between the two characters. I honestly don't know how Keaton managed to pull that off.
@luckyDancer10024 күн бұрын
I love Keaton’s portrayal the most. Bruce has access to powerful people because of his birthright, sure, but he doesn’t play a fool. He’s smart and savvy, and Shrek really doesn’t take him seriously because he’s just a “blue blood.” But Bruce holds his own fine. Unlike with Nolan’s films, where Bruce’s alter ego is a complete mess who dates supermodels and falls asleep at board meetings, etc. Maybe that was commentary on the time, when socialites were more known for their bad behavior, but Keaton played Bruce with more humanity and shyness. Even when he talks to Selina, who was a “nobody” assistant, he’s completely tongue tied and flustered. Selina had the upper hand. And I mean, I love Christian Bale as an actor but his version of Bruce Wayne felt more like a parody of wealthy society assholes. I don’t know if Bruce Wayne would’ve run his family’s legacy through the mud like that by constantly acting foolish in public, and destroying his reputation.

The roughly 90-second Bruce-Max interaction in the first part of this scene is awesome and as good as the writing as the rest of the film. It showcases 2 wealthy, affluent men who are complete opposites in almost every way: demeanor, style, attitude, and goals. Bruce is stoic, serious, traditional, and a do-gooder. Max is abrasive, sarcastic, old-fashioned, and greedy. I also like how Bruce doesn't hide the fact that he suspects Penguin runs the Red Triangle Gang and Max never suspects he's Batman because why would Batman be so stupid as to reveal who he is in this way? The best lie is the actual truth. Also, their brief scene at the ball later in the film is laced with tension and witty exchanges much like this scene. Keaton and Walken nailed their parts as much as DeVito and Pfeiffer did.
@luckyDancer10024 күн бұрын

@@Johnlindsey289 they definitely seem heavily inspired by Burton. Before then, the 60’s cartoons seemed to be what people thought of when they thought of Batman.
