Changed the Fluid and put a new filter in, feels like its at least 35 % easier to steer, might even be 50 % (its a bit hard to tell).

Excellent! That is the best! New fluid should take a lot of the strain off the system and extend the life of the pump & lines etc.And it's one of those things that is easy to do, but easy to overlook.

Excellent video!! I recently performed this job on my W124 and the only thing I would do differently is put all the new fluid into one large container before pouring it in, since the fluid, at least for my car, sucked out of the reservoir super quickly once the vehicle was started. I was scrambling going from container to container, even though I had the lids off before hand. My reservoir went dry a couple of times for a few seconds, but the system seems fine. Thanks for the great content and info in your videos. Very well edited and put together!!

Thank you! That is excellent advice for adding the fluid, with the motor running it does pump at a fairly high rate. It is a simple service item that is often overlooked and yet really helps the power steering last longer.

That is unusual. I haven't found any Mercedes from the mid 80s to the mid 90s at least that didn't use the exact same power steering filter. Maybe it was a retrofit? Or from a market outside of North America?

What if I don't have a jack cant I just turn the wheels without jacking it up?
@FlashDriveFilms
@FlashDriveFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Jacking it up just makes it a lot easier to turn the wheel. The idea is to move the internal mechanism enough to let the pump scavenge all the old fluid out, and distribute the new fluid to all parts of the steering box & lines. The worst that will happen if you don't turn the wheels while changing the fluid is there will be some old fluid left in the system and some bubbles that will cause the steering wheel to "kick" a little when you first drive it until the air gets percolated out.

Could I just drain the old dex fluid from the container with the turkey Baster replace the filter, pour the new synthetic fluid in the container without doing all the work of detaching the hose? Drive it around for a week and repeat the process with the turkey baster and new filter? I know it’s not 100% but it seems a lot easier, thoughts?
@FlashDriveFilms
@FlashDriveFilms 2 жыл бұрын
Theoretically correct. The problem, as you have noted, is that you will still have a bunch of old fluid sloshing around in the system. I'm also uncomfortable something that uses more fluid than needed in the flushing process, adding expense, and more stuff for the recycling center to handle. I would also say to use one of the modern synthetic fluids on your 1988. In 86, there were several upgrades throughout the car, and Mercedes phased out Dexron for the power steering. It will still work, it is just not optimized for the seals etc.

@@FlashDriveFilms thank you for your reply. So I’ll just use the synthetic power steering fluid you used in your car which is the Pentosin Hydraulic Fluid 1 Liter Part# CHF11S? Hopefully during my second time of draining the fluid with the turkey baster from the power steer container of the car and replacing the power steering filter again I’ll have gotten out a lot of the old fluid, what you think?

Very nice video, and very clear! In case you ever wondered this all works on the W201 OM602 diesel as well, basically the same except the reservoir is higher up and easier to reach. When I changed my power steering fluid filter, I just refilled it with some “Preston synthetic power steering fluid + stop leak”, because mine was leaking a little bit. However which power steering fluid did you use? I’ve never seen one like that before.
@FlashDriveFilms
@FlashDriveFilms 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, Mercedes used a very similar power steering setup across their model line throughout the 80's and into the 90's. Some have a larger reservoir, and/or are located slightly differently. The fluid I used was Pentosin CHF 11S, but there are other approved synthetic brands out there. Definitely price shop, however! I found a wide range of prices for the exact same fluid, like a 30% difference! Alden

Wonderfull Video, how much oil it takes?
@FlashDriveFilms
@FlashDriveFilms 3 жыл бұрын
Owners' manual says .6L, or a little over half a quart to fill the system. I used about twice that to completely flush the system, so about 1.2L (I bought two, 1L cans of fluid and have well over half the 2nd can left.)

Febi is a good choice, but I actually used a very good synthetic, Pentosin CHF 11S. It has been highly recommended on several Mercedes forums (and there is a link in the description)

Can you just Turkey baste some of the old stuff out of the reservoir and add new stuff in? And run it for two weeks then repeat once more? Did you flush the whole system because you are using new synthetic oil? Is it ok just to Turkey baste and add a bit more when using the older type oil?
@FlashDriveFilms
@FlashDriveFilms 3 жыл бұрын
That is one method. Even the way I show it in the video never gets 100% of it out. I think the key things are to replace the filter, and get as much out each time if you use the baster method. A lot depends on your plans for the car. A full flush is going to be more comprehensive, but if you are just keeping the car for a few years, do the baster thing and get fluid circulating that is at least translucent. If the fluid in there is really brown and opaque, the full flush is really the way to go.

Hi! Right at 4:00, and then to 4:30 I show the short, blocking hose with the bolt in the end going on the upper, low-pressure side of the fluid reservoir. The longer hose, with the fitting on it, then connects to the hose taken off the reservoir and is routed to the receiving jug. Hope that helps!
