Thank you so much. We have a Ford 2000 econoline van and we are on our second transmission and dealing with same problem. Been a few places and everyone says the same thing about it being transmission. Speed sensor Part was 15 dollars on Amazon or 20 at the local auto store. Was super easy fix and now problem gone. You saved the van as were close to getting rid of it. Thank you.

Same deal, knockoff old Motorcraft parts are still being made in China. Old Volvo & Mercedes etc. not the volume to make 'em cheap. 😣

I have been trying to figure out what was wrong with my ranger for the longest. I've had people tell me I need a new transmission on several occasions. I was willing to try any and everything before buying a new tranny. Nobody ever mentioned a speed sensor and it never occurred to me that it could be a problem. The condition of mine seemed much worse than the man in this video. I was a little scared that this wasn't my problem bc I couldn't even start to accelerate in drive. I had to start in the lowest gear to get moving then manually shift up into drive. I did this for a while until my speedometer quit working and the shifting was really bad. I decided to give this a try and I am so thankful that I came across this video bc I now have a fully functioning adventure truck. 😂 THANK YOU so much for sharing this you have helped me tremendously. GOD BLESS

Hey buddy from NC. I just subscribed, u r hilarious and a genius. I had my O/D OFF light to come on today on its own and flash. It too was hard shifting especially when trying to get passed 25-30mph. It scared the crap out of me so I went, parked it and turned the truck off. When I restarted it the light was off but when I went to drive it, it still was giving me the same issues with driving/shifting and I had to d..n near put my foot to the floor. I was going to check and possibly change the transmission fluid but my 02 Ford Explorer has no dipstick. I decided to do some research and i came across your video. Praise the Lord. I'm going to give a try what you recommended and I pray this is my fix. Wish me luck. Can't wait for more of your videos! 🐐

@@Og4twenty yep. I unfortunately had to get a rebuild on my tranny. It had 245k miles on it and it was given to me from a retired military vet. The intermediate band was broken. You could see it inside of the tranny pan when taken off. Also alot of the the parts inside the tranny were bad so I just got a rebuild. Everything is updated and I have a warranty on it. I just got it back. It rides better and takes off faster. Def took a toll on my summer with what I had to spend but I'm back riding and it's just like a new truck. Hopefully this isn't your issue. But if I were you the first thing I'd do is take it to get it scanned for codes, check tranny fluid to see it needs any, look inside of pan for broken parts and if need be take it to a reputable tranny shop for a diagnosis. Hope this helps. Good luck. 🙏🏾

Thank you thank you thank you ! Been chasing a shifting problem for 3-4 months now, plus od light flashing, changed that sensor it fixed my problem 100%.......like you they wanted to give me the wrong length shafted sensor......it's such an easy swap out that I took the old one out to look at it first, then put it back in to drive to the parts store to make sure I knew what I needed.....it was $19.99.....the longer shafted incorrect part was $34.99..........had to make a slight modification to the new part as the side connection tabs were a hair too long for the electrical connector to go on all the way. The fix was to file off a little on each tab, super easy took one minute, it's plastic so it files easily, thanks again I can't believe it's fixed !!!

Just had this problem today. I found your channel and watched the video. Suspect the same sensor fail on mine. Will change tomorrow. Remember the wiring should also be checked for breaks . A broken wire to the sensor can also cause it. Great video. Great info. Replaced this sensor on Sunday. Drove and in beginning seemed to work just fine. Transmission shifting good. Took on highway and coming back light started flashing again. When removed noticed small piece on sensor. Think I’ll try and buy another sensor and change differential fluid. Following thread on this problem 1 guy said this sensor did not work for him had to get original part. I’ll try rock auto. Stay turned. Well update. Tried rock auto sensor but it was for the transmission sensor not diff. No help. Ordered oem sensor from Ford still not working. @@1967wjsmith After your first fix addressing the rough idle and Throttle Sensor code, you'll need to clear the old OBD error code. The check engine light will stay on until you do. Then, see if a new code (hard shift symptom) shows up. You can buy an inexpensive OBD reader for under $30. This will read and clear codes and you'll be using this tool for years. Ok, So after replacing the speed sensor the issue still persists. I’ve checked the transmission fluid and it’s all good. I did notice that when I took out the old speed sensor there was oil gunked up on it. Is this normal? I noticed when you took your sensor out it was pretty clean. I’ve cleared the codes and I have three that keep returning. Mass or volume air flow A circuit low input one of which is CONFIRMED the second exact same error shows MIL. Last error code is On board diagnostics II monitor /Drive cycle test not complete. NON MIL. Lastly, the hard shifts only appear to happen when shifting from 1-2 and from 2-3. Can’t feel it on the other shifts. Any other ideas would be awesome.

I tried this and it seems to have worked for me. I have an 05 Ranger that began shifting harshly about 2.5 yrs ago (I only drive about 5K mi/yr since COVID). I thought the transmission was about to go out (truck has 125K miles) and I'm unable to pay the $3K to $4K to replace it so I thought I would just run it until it stopped running. But the transmission never really stopped running and then I came across this YT video and decided to give it a try. It has only been 1 day since replacing the rear differential ABS speed sensor but it does shift a lot smoother than it did before. Still not like it should though -- it goes up to about 3K RPM before shifting up to next gear but it is a smooth shift and not a harsh/jerky shift. I had been driving the truck really slow and easy since the shifting got harsh so I hope I have not done too much damage over the past couple of years. I also recently found another YT video (FordTechMakuloco - Ford Quick Tips #66) stating that some Ford transmissions have a computer algorithm to teach it to shift properly -- so maybe it will take time for my truck to relearn how to shift properly. Alternatively, the other YT video said to take it to a shop where they can erase the transmission learning memory with a professional scan tool because simply unplugging the battery will not erase the transmission learning memory data. The transmission computer chip will then begin with new fresh data and start relearning the the proper shifting and adding it to the new transmission memory data. Anyway, thanks for posting this video -- otherwise I would have kept driving my truck until the transmission fell out of it on the road somewhere. 😄

@@WPGinterceptor460Interceptor Yes it worked sort of. It ran quite well for about a week. Scotty Kilmore YT channel shows how to use a 10-ohm resistor on computer after unplugging battery that does exact same erase as scan tool. I did that and still after about a week or two, it started to take a while to shift 3rd to 4th and 4th to OD. But it was not "hard" with a big clank as before. The tranny actually has 3 speed sensors -- 1 on differential (which I changed), and 2 on tranny (in rear of tranny and 1 in mid area driver side of tranny). I have not bothered with changing those since I hardly drive the truck anymore. Only use to buy lumber once in a while at lowes. I drive around hood once every couple weeks to keep fluids moving in engine. Perhaps changing the other two sensors and a fluid change will finish fixing it? I got a 2015 Sienna and w/ seats removed, I can carry 4x8 sheet lumber so I may sell truck sometime next year.

Depending on the year and transmission 92 up trucks and vans will have a rear wheel ABS sensor on the differential some years it acts as the VSS as well. The 95 Bronco and 95 E350 had no VSS on the transmission relied on the sensor on the rear. My 97 and 98 E350 have the sensor on the transmission and the one on the rear diff. Same with the 2000 F250. 96 and older will have the E4OD 97 up 4R100 until the change over to 5r110w.

@lazycowvintagethriftdesign5595 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tony - was my ABS light on? Yes and no. On the Ranger, no OBD codes, no check engine or ABS light. Only dashboard diagnostic was Flashing OD light. However - on my Ford Focus automatic, same performance symptoms, only ABS light and check engine light was ON. Also the speedometer was acting wacky. I fixed it by switching out the ABS SPEED SENSOR - which is different from the TRANSMISSION SPEED SENSOR. In the video (8:30) you can see I bought the wrong (ABS instead of transmission) speed sensor and had to go back for the correct part. In your case Tony, my experience says it's the ABS speed sensor. Be sure to check all the wires for damage, and replace that ABS SS. It wouldn't hurt to replace the trannie SS too, but the absolute cheapest diagnostic/POSSIBLE FIX is your ABS SS. Who knows, your mechanic may suggest a new transmission and ABS system. My advice is try $20 on this fix first. Good luck and let us know the outcome! - Grandaddy-o

This was filmed in April 2021 ? Has the shifting remained good? It is interesting to wonder why a speed sensor would cause hard shifting if the speedometer worked correctly?
@lazycowvintagethriftdesign5595
@lazycowvintagethriftdesign5595 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave. As of November 28, 2021 Adventure Truck is running great with never hint of any shifting problems. My thinking is the front "ABS" sensor controls the speedometer and anti-lock braking system. The rear differential sensor informs the ECU Electronic Control System which tells the transmission when to shift. Either system malfunction may confuse the ECU as to the RPMs of the wheels and result in a late, hard, or non-existent shift. That's my theory. Actual fact is that this "trick" very often fixes the problem. Can't hurt to try! - Grandaddy-o

I wasn't so lucky, because, although my symptoms were exactly like yours, replacing the abs/speed sensor did nothing to solve the problem. No harm done since the speed sensor in my truck was 24 years old and would be needing replacement eventually. Truck drives and shifts fine on surface streets, but once I am on the highway at 65 or so, the OD light starts flashing and needs to be reset with a restart once I've pulled over.

Hey Mike sorry it wasn't an easy fix. Did you replace BOTH the speed sensors - the on-top-of-the Differential Sensor AND the side of the Transmission one? It's the Differential VSS (vehicle speed sensor) that fixed my Ranger. Before it totally went out - I also started having intermittent problems at about 60+. On a '98 Ranger automatic the Tranny-VSS is geared, and the Diff-VSS is a magnetic (non-geared) plug. Super weird is AUTOZONE calls both parts the same thing, "VEHICLE TRANSMISSION SPEED SENSOR". Check the wiring for frays and remove/clean/wiggle the connectors? - GOOD LUCK!

Hey Gabe. Definitely try replacing both speed sensors first! Maybe it is the sprag clutch that’s out. That said replacing the sensors often fixes all sorts of OD light, transmission, speedometer and ABS brake issues. Parts maybe $50-75 for both. Do it yourself or have a mechanic do the labor (probably listed at 2 hours for both, actual time up on the rack 1/2 hour). There’s several Mustang how-to change speed sensor videos up on KZbin. Search 07 Mustang Speed Sensor to see where they’re located. Let me know if it fixes a Mustang. It’s worked on plenty of Ford trucks and vans already. Good luck!

If your transmission was working well before the problem, not slipping or acting up, then chances are you or mechanic should look at the linkage components. Again, removing some screws and taking a look if any elements are obviously loose is waaay cheaper than a new transmission. But only if linkage is actually is the problem...
