You have to wonder what the cause of this is. Is there a sudden shock loading on that servo causing that snap ring retainer to fail? Can this be modified to prevent this in the future. I do know that solenoid control is usually instant with no gradual ramp up of pressure though. So that is probably the main reason. Also amazing the heat treated steel failed and didn't chew out the softer aluminum in the process.

I have a TIP FOR YOU : Get some cheap wrist bands from the sporting goods store and run them up onto your forearms to stop the transmission fluid from dripping down your arms and into your armpits and shirt when you are dropping the pan and valve body. It makes it easier and quicker to clean up as you jump back and forth between jobs. Thanks for posting.

Just completed this repair today on my 2005 F150 4R75E. Absolutely perfect, thankyou! Something I did to make this a little easier was to pick up a fluid extractor (Harbor Freight $6.99) and pull about 5 quarts of fluid out through the dip stick tube. Really decreased the amount of mess when dropping the pan, does not completely eliminate the "waterfall" but sure makes it a lot more manageable. This is really easy if you take your time and pay attention to detail. Double check everything and you'll be fine. BTW, my snap ring was in about 15 pieces and the overdrive piston came down with the valve body just like in this video. Found about 4-5 little pieces inside by the regulator valve.

Also Brian I absolutely love how meticulous you are. You take crazy time make sure everything is clean and your particular ways of things like letting the snap rings snap into place so you can hear the strong pop vs releasing the snap ring into place by the pliers. You truly work on every car like you're doing a repair on you own Mom's car. I certainly hope your able to make it financially with how proper you work and how slow you go to make sure it's all perfect and how honest you are. Thank you for doing all this right for people. In the short run, the other guys might get 3x the work done as you, but lots of those jobs will come back in with major issues, but you do such good and thorough work that eventually you'll build up an amazing positive equity on the streets that you'll have more work than you can handle.. In the end, you win bc you do the right thing. You're worth your weight on gold and it's so hard to find honest and meticulous mechanics these days. Thank you again.

Great video! This happened to my 2004, except both the snap ring and e clip broke and force of servo spring broke a chuck out of OD plate. I changed all those parts. One tip - I traced around shape of my new snap ring on a piece of paper and then placed all broken pieces in the trace to make sure I had all broken bits. There was a small piece in a channel of valve body so make sure you get all pieces identified. Mine going strong after this repair.

Great advice. One broken end of the snap ring likes to work itself into the OD regulator line up in the valvebody and sometimes will jam this valvetrain causes 3-4 shift trouble. Best to look over the entire valvebody and change the checkballs during the work.

Thanks! Videos are pure gold. My overdrive piston pounded a hole into the valve body circular stress plate and damaged the separator plate. Didnt ever fully lose 4th gear either! I think the piston rod was able to keep the overdrive band captured even though it was flopping around in there. The piston eventually bent. I inspected everything, cleaned it all out, put it back together, and it's back in the road for under $200. Saved me thousands. I'll see you for my timing chain and pump job man!

See I’ve had issues with my truck on the express way it would indicate “transmission malfunction” and O/D off, basically sounds like it went into neutral. I would pull over to the side of the road turn truck off and back on and it would reset, this happened multiple times then randomly stopped. Now I can drive 70 mph at 2000 rpm no problem, but now it’s having other issues driving around 20 to 30 mph trying to find a gear, slipping, shifting too soon and then it also hesitates and feels like it shifts twice. I’m believing it’s the valve body.

I live in Miami, Fl., do you know anyone I can to, to have mine done. I have the same problem, which just started 2 weeks ago. I have a 2003 Grand Marquis SVT. It used to be a race car. It has a 2 gear shift change, flomaster and 22inc rims. I recently had 3 jobs done on it by a street guy, who knows a little something something, but Every Time he fixes one thing, something else happens. First, he replaced the power steering pump, after that was done my car overheated and my radiator exploded and he replaced that, and my transmission cooler literally fell on the ground and he replaced that. Now, my car will rev when I try to accelerate at 40 or higher when I release the gas and press back on it. However, if I press the gas and dont let up off the gas, the car will continue to accelerate, but as soon as I release rhe gas pedal, I have to wait for the car to slow all the way down in order to accelerate again. I have no problem driving and releasing the gas pedal below 40mph. I took it to a mechanic and he wanna charge me $1,090 to do the transmissiin and he say I need the converter, as well for $190. He say the car was losing power in over drive. I don't know what to do because I am a female. If I was skinny, I would try to fix it myself. I was going to take it to Ford dealer but they wanna diagnose it because they can't accept another person's words that the problem is what they say it is. I know the dealer would be a lot more. Another thing, my break light has been on the dashboard for a while and never goes out. I have no engine check light on for any problems. I dont know if I'm low on brake fluid, the reason why the brake light is on. My car brakes fine. I'll have to check the brake fluid to see if the brake light has something to do with the fluid or the loss of power over 40mph.

Hello, very nice video. I want to ask about the snap rings used in the repair. Most all "C" clips, "E" clips or snap rings have a flat side and the other side a rounded outer edge. I was taught that the flat side goes to the outside or away from the spring pressure. In theory, the flat side will lock in the groove with a better fit. Do you have a preference on which side of a snap ring you put to the outside? Just curious OK, I worked autos and jet engines for 40 yrs. Thanks Jim

This helped me in so many ways, especially the bolt sequence for the valve body. Unfortunately, I still do not have overdrive, the servo was intact and nothing odd in the valve body. I tried pushing up on the overdrive servo, and there was plenty of resistance, so I will have to keep researching. Thanks for the help with the video

Hello Bryan, 2002 f150 owner here Watched your video and I lack the confidence to do this job. I am a small engine mechanic and although your video is very thorough this is just way too technical for me. I've opted to take it into the shop. Dude is charging 1500 for a total rebuild with a one year twelve thousand mile warranty. I respect you transmission guys I'm afraid of auto transmissions. Godspeed Brother

That fluid looked like it never was changed. I chain my fluid in my 5.4 Expy every 40,000 miles. I mistreat the heck out of it towing boats, snowmobile enclosed trailers and dump double axle trailers. I say ... keep your fluids changed and the truck will take care of you.

Are the GM check balls, which come in bags of 10, the same as the Ford check balls, which come in bags of 7? I ask because they are shown on Amazon as commonly bought with the Ford parts you link to, and because of user comments that they are literally the same, down to the part numbers. Thanks for a great video!

my 2005 Ford f-150 4.6L goes into 4th as long as you let off the gas and let it "hook" and then if will stay in there for a while and then it comes out back into 3rd.... if you let off it will go back into 4th and as long as it doesn't have a hill coming up it will stay in there a while???? You will be driving in 4th down the interstate and it will start going back and forth sometimes. My snap on modis showed the seconds to be 1.-1, 2 for the seconds on the torque converter which was described to me that the torque converter was holding. Then SOMETIMES the numbers would go from maybe -1 to 136 of course when it did, the transmission went back to 3rd. Any ideas?

I just watched the video before attempting the repair. It went perfect except I broke one of the clips on the harness. I figured I had done all this and there’s no way I’m putting in a broken part so I ordered a replacement from Amazon that was made in America for seventeen dollars. So far it’s working perfect!! Truly, you are doing God’s work. Thank you so much for these videos. I don’t know what I would do without you

Well if they would have put a drain bolt people may question the "lifetime" fluid and would end up changing it. Without a bolt, people are more likely to believe in the "lifetime" fluid.

If Ford still used an Overdrive servo cover like in the AOD and the AODE transmissions they would not be breaking snap rings. I guess Ford wanted to save weight again by removing the cover and having the servo slam against the snap ring, Ford quality compromised by a bean counter. Fix Or Repair Daily!!

***NO REVERSE, after completed, HERE IS YOUR ISSUE! *** At 44:44 Brian points to and talks about the "Critical Part" of the manual valve, when reinstalling the Valve Body. BE SURE you pay attention to this, BE SURE as he points with his INDEX FINGER, that it lines up with the FIRST Groove and NOT the SECOND Groove with the washer. IF YOU DO NOT line it up correctly, you will get it back together and you will NOT Have REVERSE. and will have to pull the pan again and reset it!
