Ok but I was actually looking for a color-theory-oriented explanation of color temperature. This is the best I've found, most other videos just demonstrate the absolute basics like the kelvin scale and that's about it.

Holy shit, when you started talking about stars I was out. I’m totally colorblind and I was doing my best to try to follow along but alas, my mind is blown and I have no idea what you’re talking about! Your videos are the best, I’ve been watching for a long time. Thanks for all the effort you put into these for us!

As someone who’s “color-sighted” I could barely follow this so I can’t even imagine watching this colorblind lol. It’s an amazing video I just am not familiar enough with the terminology yet to be able to take it all in

Very interesting. I work with high-pressure sodium lights - 2100K, ~140,000 lumens a pop without ever stepping down. A bunch of them. As such, I'm genuinely surprised that anyone would want a 2000K light, or a 2700K for that matter. Under them, everything essentially looks redish/orange. Not sure how and why that's desirable. As for my own flashlight preference, I tend to go for a cooler CCT, as I look at 2100K all frickin' day. Learned a bit from the video. Appreciate it.
@cheule
@cheule Жыл бұрын
I think the reason is that not all 2700K temp lights are created equally. This is where CRI comes in. Sodium vapor lamp are low CRI, and the 219b and 519a emitters are around 95 CRI

Your eyes adjust to the cct at night. no sht the lower cct looks strange at the day time.. 1800k high cri is as good as and usable as 2700k high cri at night. HPS/HPS are like negative cri or very low and monochromatic, meaning that ansi chart looks like a straight orange line with no other colors. they are efficient and do not pollute light as much, and have a nostalgia factor to them but they are bad for visual driving and identifying.

E21A 2000k is a beautiful golden orange I have a D4V2 with 2000k/3500k led's and it's excellent. I also got a Convoy S11 recently and it's moreso a deep yellow sunset color compared to the deep orange candle type color. A part of me wishes it were all 2000k led's but the 3500k mixes in real well and makes it more practical compared to 4 2000k led's especially cri wise I'm surprised you don't have anything higher than 5000k for the review. Can't say I really blame you I'm a fan of 2700k-4000k color temps for most purposes. I love going even lower as well mostly for use as mood lighting or indoor lighting in general when I don't need high cri lighting.

This is an amazing and very informative video. I honestly don’t mind some green in my lights. But I prefer something like a sst20 4000k. Going to be getting a flashlight with a E21A 2700k soon to see how I feel about a warmer tint.

I always seem to like lights with the sst 20 4000k. I compared it with my Nichia 219c and I like it better. I was playing with my new emisar D4V2 with the sst20 and noticed it was almost identical to the mid day sun on my wall. I like bright white as well but for work indoors I need a floody neutral light.

How does CRI factor into this? And what is the difference between R9080 and say 90 CRI?
@cheule
@cheule 2 жыл бұрын
R9080 is a moniker for “90 CRI for R1-8 and 80 CRI for R9”. R9 is an important red color that is left out of standard CRI rating. So a light could have “90 CRI” and yet only 65 rating for R9 red. So that’s where R9080 comes in…

Definitely Nichia 219b 4000K. I love sw45k for it’s consistently rosy binning, but 4000K looks better to me at night and has slightly better r1-15 values even over sw45k. I also recently got a BOSS FT with sw30 that is gorgeous. So beautiful, but not appropriate for edc/daytime use.

@@cheule I only recently got interested in modern, lithium, rechargeable LED flashlights, and bought an IF25A in 4000K. I was a bit apprehensive about going with the 4K, due to the fact that the 4K is not quite as bright, but I’m really glad I did, because I absolutely love the color of that beam!

What about adding the additional RGB led to the white ones, so that you could add the color to the existing white. Like if you want more pinkish add red etc.

Let me state this disclaimer: everyone has a different opinion on this. Now let me tell you my pick: 4000K. Anything from 3500K to 4500K is in a zone I like, with 4000K being the temp I always come back to. I have lights ranging from 1800K to 8000K, because variety is the spice of life. And anything from 3000k to 5000K works for me. But 2700K I usually find too warm, and 6500K too cold.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t have any way to measure it, but I know I just added some Lee 1/8 -green to a Wurkkos ts21 with the 4000k emitters. It wasn’t bad before, but after being used to my 519A, it looks much better now. Just slightly pink.
