These are videos for grown ups, devoid of sensationalist nonsense and backed up with clear, simple science and bags of common sense. I want to build an EcoBrix passive house and the videos are helping me get the right fabric design before a penny is wasted during build or in the years after completion. Great stuff, please keep it up.

Brilliant! This is exactly the type of info I had been looking for. I always thought the tapered insulation was difficult to come across for long roof spans, and it was a DIY type of solution. This is helpful.

Looking forward to discussing a very small kitchen roof extension in a few months time. Also a fan of Robin Clevett. Prefer to do the job myself - should be straight forward even with a warm roof.

Good luck Chris. Yes, do it yourself if you have the time.

How does one go about obtaining a completion certificate? For example when dealing with works outside the remit of the structural engineer etc.?
@build-better-things
@build-better-things 11 сағат бұрын
Even if you don’t need a structural engineer, you may need building regulations approval for any material change to your project. Repairs and like for like replacements are really the only thing where there’s no material change. Once you have completed the work per the approved drawings, you apply for the completion certificate. If you did not bother with submitting for building building regulations, then you cannot seek a completion certificate. This becomes very relevant if and when you come to sell as the buyer’s solicitor examines the Title and documents.

@build-better-things , Why cant you use insulation with foil and if you have foil can't I just pull it off?
@build-better-things
@build-better-things Күн бұрын
Foil in a roof is a condensation magnet as it as a different thermal conductivity compared to the insulation. It’s also impermeable. This is very relevant in a warm roof where there’s no ventilation on the cold side of the insulation. Yes you can peel it off. Why not just buy the right product?

Great, please could I ask if I am using 3 inch joist do in need firring 3 inch thickness too? Also for a long length say 8m can I use firring starting in middle and tapper both side? Thanks
@GreenTorque
@GreenTorque Күн бұрын
Why would you want to start in the middle? you're complicating your roof design and PIR cuts, you're also doubling your gutter costs, and increasing labour costs/time spent cutting PIR to exact angle to meet in the middle. Firrings should be same thickness as joists. Gives a bit more room for accidentally deviating slightly when screwing down the OSB and insulation.

@RIANMSO no you don’t need 3 inch, can use 2. Yes can start in middle taper both sides 4metres, but then you need gutter and down pipe both sides.

@@GreenTorque Thanks, I was with height restriction and it will save me 100mm on firring height(half). Builder happy to do without any added cost.
