It's easier to take an idea, an old movie or book, and remake it, because there is less risk it will bomb and not make any money, since it already has an existing fan base that will go and see it, just for nostalgia. Hollywood isn't as much about art as it was in earlier years (1920-2000 give or take) as it is about making cash.
