I have been getting lots of requests for a tea review video, and since I drink 1-2 cups daily, I thought it was time! Shopping for tea can be really confusing, there's loose leaf versus bagged tea, organic versus conventional, flavored teas, herbal tea, and more. Basically it comes down to this, you really want to buy organic, other countries can spray tea leaves with chemicals that are banned here. Loose leaf tea is where it's at, that is the best quality, especially compared to the dust in a tea bag. Look out for flavored teas, most time they are using those sneaky natural flavors. Bobby, Dessi, Rose, and Art! XOXO

Rooibos is a tea that can only be produced in South Africa. It's considered a super food/ drink as it has high amounts of antioxidants (50% more than that in green tea). It even has AHA (alpha hydroxi acids) in it's most natural form and we know how skin care enthusiast love aha😅. It can prevent diabetes (not cure it) and it's may treat cancer (studies are still in process). Rooibos is the best tea in my opinion😅... Much love from South Africa❤️🇿🇦.

Yes. Rooibos is also a good tea for healing. It’s also a good tea for people who cannot have much caffeine. Always check the right water temperature for different teas; some do not require full boil. Some manufacturers make electric pots with different setting for different types of tea. For ice teas, you can either brew in the refrigerator or in the son. Harney and Sons has a wonderful book on teas and tea making.

And then think about just how much tea is consumed from tea bags vs whole leaf tea. My dad is a tea fanatic and he recently swore off all tea in teabags. Instead there’s a local coffee shop (they roast their own beans there) in our town that sells very high quality whole leaf loose tea by weight. He can take a jar and have them fill it up for him from over a dozen teas and the people at the shop can help him choose what he likes. He owns this little metal spoon with a hinged cover that has holes in it and it’s perfect for single cups. You just fill the spoon, close the lid, and put it in a mug of hot water to steep. I’m lucky enough to work at a museum that has a gourmet tea shop in our gift shop so I get tea there all the time. They have both caffeinated and non-caffeinated teas flavored with real ingredients (think actual peppermint leaf in the mint tea and actual dried peach in the peach tea) and they make a concentrate they can mix with iced or hot water to make different teas. And they sweeten everything to taste like a coffee shop so you can get unsweetened versions of any flavor they make. My favorite is a non-caffeinated blackberry tea. They also have a chai that tastes like sweet potato pie. (If this sounds great, they’re called Piper and Leaf and they have a website and will ship their loose leaf all over the US.) All this to say, consider buying at a local shop if you’re a tea person; they will always have a better selection than the grocery store.

If you want really good tea, treat yourself and seek out loose tea from a good importer. High-quality tea isn't cheap, but the flavor difference from your everday grocery store teabags is often staggering. You can find a seemingly endless variety to explore, and each growing region, estate, and flush (harvest) will have distinct flavors. A typical grocery store tea section doesn't even hint at the full array of what's out there. Failing that, visit an Asian market. Selection will probably limited to teas from the Far East, but even the cheap loose teas there will often blow the tea bags from your regular grocery store out of the water. If you stick with tea bags made with tea fannings (aka "dust"), steep them for way less than the packages usually recommend. 3-5 minutes might be appropriate for a loose tea, but you're aiming for more like 30-60 seconds because of the vastly increased surface area of the tea dust. Otherwise, you're going to have some bitter, nasty tea. Similarly, for green or oolong teas, you want to use water that's come off the boil and allowed to cool somewhat. Scalding your green tea with boiling water is a sure way to ruin it.

One correction: Not all small pieces of tea are cheap. You’ll notice all breakfast teas (strong blacks, like Irish breakfast) are small pieces. It has to do with oxygenation. Apparently, the more the leaf is broken, the more enzymes are released, which then leads to greater oxygenation, in turn producing darker black, and stronger tea. Even when not talking about strong breakfast blends, you almost never see a whole leaf black...you just can’t get it oxygenated enough in whole leaf form.
@MohitSapra97
@MohitSapra97 Жыл бұрын
Yeah you are right, I also haven’t come across whole Leaf of black, like the way we see in green and oolong, size of the leaf shrinks when oxidised. Also whole long doesn’t ensure better, sometimes it’s also about the way tea was cut and what was the size of leaves when they were cut. Big leaf don’t always mean better quality, because quality of any tea degrades when leaves start to get bigger than set quality standards.
@pablob.m.7746
@pablob.m.7746 Жыл бұрын
Well stronger doesn't mean better, that darker more "oxygenated" (oxidized) cup is devoid of most anti oxidants that make good tea good. Marketing people will always find a way to make you pay more for sub par products like burnt """intense""" coffee

I kind of disagree with leaf tea vs granulated tea...it all depends on how you make the tea...If you want to blanch the tea leaves in hot water (cover with a lid of the kettle and turn off your stove) for a two or three minutes and decant the hot water (Note: don’t steep for too long or you’ll find your tea has gone bitter). That is generally how English people and Chinese drink their tea. That is how you should drink green tea but that is not how the other parts of the world drink tea. Ceylon tea or Darjeeling tea are leaf tea and have a distinct flavor, aroma and high antioxidant content. Thus, it is preferred to drink them blanching the tea in hot water as I mentioned above. But, there is also a variety that is called black tea like the Assam tea which is generally granulated mixed with some leaves, you boil it in water with ginger and cardamom, then add milk...boil more and that is classic Indian tea or Iranian tea (different procedure but same ingredients) for you. This type of tea is usually (meaning not always) found in tea bags, rather than in loose leaf form. Technically, Darjeeling tea is for flavor (usually goes well without milk and sugar) and Assam tea is full bodied, strong with a malty flavor and high caffeine content (usually goes well with milk and sugar). I will add here that, though Ceylon tea is black tea it is also found in loose leaf tea form which has a very beautiful citrus aroma and the granulated ceylon tea can be used similar to assam tea as in tea bags or loose. The final quality of the tea depend on many factors - soil, climate, plant, leaf type, harvesting time, processing methods and much more. For example: Assam orange pekoe and Assam CTC have a very different flavor profile than Darjeeling tea or ceylon tea or other black teas. All these pumpkin tea, hibiscus tea or turmeric tea etc, are nonsense tea...that is for amateur tea drinkers, who don't even know what tea is. The taste and flavor of tea should never be masked with other things. Similarly, I am pure black coffee person and thus goes without saying I am not a fan of Hazelnut Coffee or Pumpkin Spice Coffee. Simplicity is an art!!

hi Bobby, thanks for doing this video on tea. The other reason why bulk tea is better is because many companies making tea bags use a plastic glue to keep the bag together, just look up plastic particles in tea bags, or plastic tea bags on the internet to see more and to see pictures of tea bags that are ok, vs the tea bags that are sealed with plastic, after I found this out I stopped buying tea bags. Thanks for sharing info many customers don't know! When our family started at the local farmer's market, some industry leaders wondered "how did you get blueberries to taste like that?" "ummmm....we picked wild blueberries...." "No, really....what flavorings did you use?" {Confusion} "uh, we just picked wild blueberries and dried them." "Psh, no one does that!" {Walks Off} Since then we've learned there are only a few other tea makers out there doing all natural, no chemical tea blends. Thank you for your work!

Even if you don't have organic, it's usually recommended to throw out the first steep in order to make sure the 2nd one you want to drink is cleaner and more flavorful now that you've opened up the leaves and the flavors Usually most quality whole leaf teas can be re-steeped 2-4 times, saving you money

Thank you for explaining that! When I saw $43 for a pound of whole leaf tea compared to purchasing a box of the whole leaf tea bags more cost-effective. I panicked! It would be a challenge to work it into a conscious saving budget. But I didn't know that a tea bag can and should be steeped 2-4 times, throwing out the first steep actually is cost effective compared to boxed organic teas. Thanks for the clarification. I think you're the best at what you're doing for public service.

I had tea leaves my whole life, doing the strainer and tea pot thing. I just hated Lipton's the a bags then I tried British tea bag Yorkshire tea and it tasted Absolutely Amazing! I kind of drink 50/50 now British tea bags and loose leaf. Yeah, you really shouldn't knock something til you try it, Lipton's tea bags tastes awful and maybe, that is why you are bias against the tea bag but some of those British tea bags are just as enjoyable as the tea leaves and perfectly convient when you can't bring your strainer and tea pot. I think if you don't know what something is and you have never tried it then you shouldn't be telling people not to buy it became many of those British teas are actually amazing in tea bag form

Many years ago, (in the 80s I belive), a book came out called 'E IS FOR ADDITIVES'. It suddenly revealed the extent of chemicals that are added to our foods. The book became almost a bible, and suddenly, many people started actually reading the labels. I believe that tea bags have plastic beads added to them, which inevitably end up in the environment by one route or another. We really don't know what we are consuming.

I would avoid the disposable tea bags even the one you fill yourself. They have been shown to have a incredibly high amount of micro plastics that you will end up drinking. Micro plastics maybe what was like lead in wine for the Roman Empire.

Spot on. I had a tea and coffee company in Indonesia. The only thing I'd add about organic coffee is that organic helps release the polyphenols juat like it does in tea. Tea thats not organic = pesticide soup. Add a plastic teabag and it's even worse! Chai + honey is the best! Coffee + milk + coconut sugar (lower glycemic index) is the bomb!

In China when we talk about tea in everyday life, we are always talking about the whole-leaf ones. I once tried the Lipton, but for only once, and I never saw anyone in my life ever consumed tea bags. There are Liptons in the corner of convenient stores but seems no one ever buy them :D Especially in central or south China, there are places, counties or cities famous for its tea in every province, we all have at least an acquaintance or a family member who work in tea industry, so our shelves at homes are always loaded with teas. Interesting vid anyway, watching from China while sipping my daily dose of green tea :D

You can grow chamomile at the side of your driveway or it is great ground cover for bare spots in your yard. I lived in a house in Gary Indiana and used to buy lots of chamomile tea and one day I looked down and at the edges of my driveway and there was chamomile growing all over and I mean lots of it. I started laughing and double checked and sure enough it was chamomile. Naturally it’s best growing anywhere but a driveway. But we forget to look around our house and yard for what’s already growing there on its own. I am currently trying to start some growing on the side of my house and I will let all of you know how that comes out. Many herbs are easy to start in your yard.
