So pleased you guys loved this! I must’ve seen it 100’s of times and still get chills! A wee bit of background on the last verse - this was added for the live performance so isn’t in the original song. Dave’s brother is in prison for murder as part of our joint enterprise law, he didn’t kill anyone but was part of a group that were involved. So the white guy ‘Jack’ that Dave talked about came from a very privileged background, however decided to dedicate his like to helping young guys in prison see that there’s another way and help with rehabilitation. He was close to Dave and his family because of the work with his brother. Jack and Saskia were both killed by a terroist that had been attending an event about rehabilitation in London, he’d just got out of prison. Also, Dave had Jack’s parents at the Brit awards as his guests and they didn’t know he was going to rap about Jack. So moving! If you’d like more info, google London Bridge attack.

The last part when he rapped about ‘Jack Merritt’…Jack was a young man who helped prisoners rehabilitate into society and has helped with Dave’s brother who is doing a life sentence in prison…Jack was unfortunately killed in a terrorist attack on London Bridge which is why Dave put him in this performance. The last verse was for his friend Jack who was fighting for equality. Also Dave talked about ‘Grenfell victims’ it was a block of flats that burnt down and was designed and built with flammable materials and there was no fire deterrents in the block of flats. Lots of people died and it was a government fuck up as they knew it was built in such a dangerous way. Also he spoke on the ‘wind rush generation’ a lot of black people were working for the British empire in the Caribbean etc on plantations but the British empire allowed them to move here to work around 1948 to 1973 as there was shortage of workers in the U.K. after the war. Then once the population of white working men built up again, we then wrongly deported some of the ‘wind rush generation’ back to the Caribbean and took away there rights and ‘British Citizenship’ Disgraceful

Jack Merritt and the girl shown beside him were social workers helping rehabilitate criminals after jail, he worked with Daves brother apparently. As the news stated - 'Saskia Jones, 23, and Jack Merritt, 25, were killed by convicted terrorist Usman Khan at a Learning Together event at Fishmongers' Hall in London in 2019'. Jacks parents were in the crowd and didnt know dave had this tribute planned.
