How is it “click bait”? The most important piece of information that was very beneficial to me was not to consume flaxseed if one has thyroid problems. It made much sense and confirmed the negative effects I was experiencing whenever I consumed flaxseed. Now I can chuck it.

I have been consuming flax now for about 5-6 years. We started with flax oil and then graduated to the flax-seed itself. It must be ground or powdered in order to absorb the nutrients as we cannot process the hull internally. Also...you do NOT need to consume fat beforehand as flax is 66% fat with most of that being omega 3 (3.75 to 1 ratio 3's to 6's) The greater majority of people take flax for it's omega content (the 3's) and your body's enzymes fight over which fat gets processed. If you are trying to balance your fat intake, taking fat before consuming flax seems counter-productive. One last thing. You can safely consume up to 50 grams of flax per day which is close to two ounces. You should only be taking half/whole teaspoons when you are FIRST starting out. This is to see how your body handles/reacts to the food. A teaspoon is a mere two grams and gives you virtually nothing in terms of the vitamins/minerals/fiber/omega 3's/protein/etc. I suggest seeing how your body reacts and immediately go to an ounce a day/morning. You can roast or sprout your seeds if you wish to eliminate the antinutrients although the greater majority of people have no issues. The consumption of flaxseeds should not change no matter what season we are in, as these should be a consistent part of a healthy diet. Winter summer fall spring, no matter. In closing, and I DID like the video, you can store your pre ground/ground at home flaxseed in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to a month. Sure, yeah, flax is known to rot quicker than some other produce, but it does last in the fridge for quite awhile. CHEERS! :)

For breakfast, I often have sauteed potatoes, red onions, and some flaxseeds mixed in. I usually add some other vegetable, such as cabbage or mushrooms, to the mix. It's very filling, and nutritious.

Hello Dr., Great information! I have been using ground flaxseed for 5 months; I add two tablespoons of organic ground flaxseed to my steel cut oatmeal every morning and it has helped to lower my blood pressure by 10 pts. I also add walnuts and cranberries…no sugar, no milk. I exercise two to three days a week (strength and stability) for 1 to 2 hours, drink 70+ oz of water a day and am on the lowest dose of amlodipine, 2.5 mg. I do store it in an air tight container in a cool pantry but maybe I’ll store it in the refrigerator from now on. Because of the results of the above combination, my doctor has suggested I continue using the flaxseed rather than increase the medication…again. In fact, an increase to 5mg had to be discontinued and I was returned to the 2.5 mg after negative side effects.

Hi doc! It’s the first time I’m hearing that flaxseeds shouldn’t be used in case of hypothyroidism. In fact it is encouraged to consume to reduce inflammation in the body.

I bought some ground flax seeds from our local health store, I have put about one desert spoon on my porridge each morning.I am pleased with the effect it has on my bowel. I have been doing this for about one week, and I am encouraged to continue . Hope you agree!

Better if you buy a little nut and seed grinder. Then you can grind them as required. I grind mine each day....they are then moist and you are getting 💯 of the goodness.

An excellent analysis of Flax seed. I live in Thailand where we don"t have winter, not much cold, no ice or snow (yes, I like it that way). But if you mean "winter" as in the cold etc then I assume the half measures of flax seed do not apply to those in tropical zones!

Dr. Joshi, I have Hypothyroidism and takes Synthroid. I have been consuming Flaxseed for several years per the guidelines of my nutritionist. Flaxseed is beneficial for individuals with thyroid issues because it is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation can exacerbate symptoms of thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism. Additionally, flaxseed is also high in lignans.

Same here. I too have hypothyrodism n using roasted flaxseed powder everyday in my salad, chutneys n roti flour in small quantities. Soak corriander seeds overnight n have that water empty stomach every morning instead of tea. It is good for hypothrodism.

Yes, I’ve been taking them every morning in my shake. I have issues with my thyroid and I’ve heard they are good because of the omega in them but I don’t understand why this Dr said not to use them. I’m confused now.

@@gabrielle1777I have hyperthyroidism and It’s hard for me to find study’s because research simply isn’t done . If hypo or hyper there is an imbalance of TH1 and TH2 that’s known . I found only this study related directly to my autoimmune disease (Graves Disease) . I think there is an effect on estrogen and I was hoping this video would explain. Many thyroid patients use flax seed. It is important to know as stated in this self study that flax seed supplements or any omega 3 supplement should include an anti oxidant to prevent cell oxidation for thyroid patients risk of cancers (which is a very small occurrence ) ie., thyroid cancer but I take antioxidants like co q 10 because it’s beneficial to anyone with auto immune disease and I believe from my own chronic pain and blood work that omega 3 is extremely beneficial to me . Research study : omega-3 fatty acids are thought to reduce the inflammation associated with certain autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis [1]. They have also been investigated with some success for such conditions as Crohn's disease, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus, and multiple sclerosis [2]. N-3 fatty acids are thought to exert their effects by suppressing the proliferation of T lymphocytes and autoantibodies [3]. Further, animal studies have shown that consumption of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid leads to a change in the fatty acid composition of immune cell membranes in a dose dependent manner. As long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (LCPUFA) are incorporated into cell membranes, less arachidonic acid is produced, and the inflammatory response is thus inhibited [4-8]. Unfortunately, no reports could be found regarding investigations of their use for autoimmune hyperthyroidism.

I usually roast flaxseed, grind to a coarse powder. Combines well with almond flour for making low carb roti’s . I agree flax seeds like sesame seeds are heat producing, hence it works well in winter. It is also very filling.

Use flax seeds in dry roasting-powdered form OR sprouted form. Store it in an air tight container and put it in the fridge but not more than 10 days. Then prepare the fresh batch. Consuming flax seeds helps in Menstrual problems, cramps, bones, joints and appetite problems. Use flax seeds with any kind of fat to get the maximum benefits out of it. Drink more water while it’s consumption.

Flax Seed is to be used to attack blocks in the intestines, specifically if there are polyps that fill up with rotting food and parasites, inflammation happens and pain then surgery. What flax seeds do is they enter the polyp and flax seeds become a slick jelly and will get to the lining of the polyp and coat that inflamed lining. The putrid food slips out of the polyp, then the body can heal under protection of Flax jelly. If u suck on a flax seed it turns into a gel. In the 1930’ to 1940’s all women used flax seed gel for curling their hair. From Farmers wives to the wealthy and famous flax seed was on every vanity next to a glass of water. Measure out a handful of flax seed into a cup of water. After an amount of time there’s a jar of hair gel. Natural, no odor, and readily available every where. The first manufacturer of commercial Hair Gel was 1965, a clear blue gel called Dippity-Do. A Rule of Thumb useing flax seed is Use flax Seed to heal something, stop after it’s healed. Use flax Meal for maintenance every day. Flax Oil use every time you make a smoothie or protein Drink. Use 1 Tblsp per 100 lbs of your body weight. If you weigh 150lbs have 2 Tblsp. The oil cures many issues, eases pain in body, lubricates dry eyes from the inside out. Good For Senior’s Dry-eyes. Eliminates a body’s dry skin, softens lines, smoothed wrinkles. many other corrections for good health. Do your own research. Stay Healthy♥️

Thank you for this valuable information Dr. Vivek, I was consuming too much flaxseed at once , like a tablespoon, sometimes two in my smoothie, instead of gradually increasing the quantity. Which affected my peptic ulcers really bad . Since then I haven't been taking flaxseeds. I will go back to consuming it. I appreciate this video 🙏

@@johnormsby2034 Yep. Oil is unstable. Flaxseed keeps a long time, and even longer when you wait to grind it fresh. Weeks, months. Oil loses its omega 3 in days. Buy the time you buy it, it’s probably already not good.

Just basics everyone says to watch out, if you are allergic. FYI - it's been highly recommended for pregnant women, to lower the labour threshold. It's been used since centuries. You shouldn’t need to roast them if you eat a well balanced diet. I’ve been grinding raw brown flax seeds over my breakfast every day for 20 years and typically grind at least several tablespoons. The part about roasting them isn’t backed up by science as far as I can find.

I do a tablespoon of flax with the tablespoon of Chia. I grind them in my coffee grinder and I cook them with my rolled oats, organic sprouted grain oats. I do that every morning with a little tablespoon of maple syrup and blueberries 1/3 cup.

In North Karnataka region , we enjoy flax seeds chatni powder ( garlic, salt,mirch )powder and curd with rotti or chapati . We don't take it in tablet or oil form.

Flaxseed is ok. It must be ground before eaten. Goes rancid quickly. Chia seeds are better because can be eaten ground up or whole after soaking in food for about 20 minutes. High quality fish oil is best. Flax needs to be converted into omega 3 by liver functions. Therefore is takes more flax to get O-3. fish oil is more direct in that sense. But great fiber and nourishment from flax or chia

Over heating can cause toxins in general. I would do some more investigating. Certain compounds become activated while heating. Sorry I can't recommend the most recent viable source. Boiling flax seeds is really good in recipes as a butter substitute and as a hair conditioner

Hello Doc, Thanks for the wonderful information on flaxseed consumption. I am looking forward to lose weight by taking flaxseed in my diet and thus I have gone through many videos. In a certain video I heard the lady say that flaxseed powder should be made without roasting the seeds and that it must be consumed within 30 minutes of grinding. Your view is a bit different I see. I lose a lot of hair and I think I have hypothyroidism is flaxseed helpful in that situation? Could you go into more detail about if you’re having thyroid issues don’t use flaxseed that was not very clear? I would greatly appreciate that thank you so much.

Take a good vitamin B complex, and a b12. For sure start stimulating the scalp by message and use a good brush. Change your shampoo. Google sulfate free, silicone free etc…. Change your diet 😆

My Mom make the powder of it by roasting and then mixing it with chilly powder garlic and a bite of salt. We have it daily with rice, chapathi o with breakfast items. In Marati it is called as 'Hindoli'/'Javsa chi hindoli'. I love it! we consume it with every eatable food items. So is it good to consume it by mixing with chilly powder, chopped garlic, salt ?

Flax seed will raise estrogen. So, it will feel like you have less testosterone.

Hi Abi rami! Coconut oil is very good for skin in many ways. If you mix with part olive oil , even better. Grapeseed oil is a light oil with great absorbency and is excellent also to mix with the Coconut oil. (extra virgin unrefined) The best way to use the oils on skin is daily within 5-10 minutes after you take shower. I'm sure that will help you. 🙂

Wow. I am grateful for this video as I have been using flaxseed wrong for as long as I can remember. I usually use organic seeds and use a teaspoon or, in some instances, 1/2 teaspoons into my smoothies, dessert, yogurt, etc. I don't use it on a regular sometimes I have it for months and never use it. But when I do, I just put a few seeds in a protein shake or smoothie, etc. I also have chia seeds, but I seldom use them. Doctor, can you also make a video on Chia seed? I don't know how to consume them or if I should as these superfood aren't cheap😫. I want the best benefit from them. Thank you so much for guiding and encouraging us, faithful viewers. SOAK THE CHIA SEEDS IN WATER WATER FOR A FEW HOURS. YOU CAN USE IT IN JUST LIKE THE FLAXSEEDS.

Place approx 2 Tbls. Chia seeds in small jelly jar, fill with wate, replace lid and vigorously shake. (exact measurements or jar size unimportant) I leave mine on counter for 2 hrs ….. shake well every 30 minutes. The Chia will absorb water and become a loose jell. I like mine to be fairly thick …..allowing me to scoop a large spoonful into my salads, oatmeal, soups, scrambled eggs, stir fries, cottage cheese or yogurts or smoothies…..basically, anything! You will never know seeds are there! Store jelled Chia’s in fridge. My small jar gives me a 4-5 day supply.. I have no idea how long jelled Chias last in fridge so that is why I keep batch small. Have been using Chia seeds approx 13 yrs. If you find your Chia/water mixture is too thin……simply add more Chia to miix and shake! Personally believe soaked Chias have a better absorption. ( may have seen that on another video.) A word of warning! (personal experience,) Chias will grab on to anything wet i.e wet sponge, dishcloth etc. Seeds don’t wash out! 99% will have to be pick out by hand! UGH! when finished with meal…simply wipe inside dish with a wet paper towel before washing.

My mother made flax seed chutney. After roasting and cooling the seeds, garlic red chilli powder and a bit of salt is added and then ground in a mixie. We store it in an airtight container and have it with chapati, dosa, idli etc.

Eat a can of Salmon per week. 1000mg of EPA e DHA in a can. This is more than sufficient. Many Spirulina and oil supplements were discovered to not have detectable amounts of EPA and DHA. Get your nutrition from food 👍.

You forgot a contraindication: people prone to diverticulitis should avoid them ... unless theyve been thoroughly hulled after sprouting.

I have diverticulitis....flaxseed has helped me so much. I am regularly going to the toilet each morning. No bloating no pain. Absolutely fantastic. I do grind them each day as required

As a South Indian we use as doctor said ,dry roast f.seed with sesame seeds with little pepper and salt. Weekly 3 times for little rice of 1 spoon .i have seen my hair fall stopped.amazing result.👍

Ppl say phytic acid prevent the body from absorbing the nutrient or make it digestible. Other report also said the body need phytic acid for certain mineral uptake in the body. When you grind the seed it break the phytic acid which is on the shell. So there are 2 train of thought here.

stop gluten and lectins foods get mary ruth lympatic support and also get ancestral nutrition thyroid (grassfed grassfinished) hypo is overactive pituiary that exausted the thyroid and most of the time lympatic condition and bam you are cured after few months)

You have to dry fry flaxseed before grinding and consuming. Else it is VERY toxic. Helps me with my hormones, hair and skin. Keeps your arteries clean too. Contains omega 3 as well. Keeps you stomach healthy if you drink enough water.

Flaxseeds if taken in larg quantities could prevent the proper amount of iodine to be absorbed by the thyroid, which can lead to iodine deficiency, which directly affects the body’s ability to make thyroid hormones. Flaxseeds are also guilty of containing goitrogens which can cause goiter and induce hypothyroidism. If taken in small quantity then it's ok to use flaxseeds.

@@kalpanashukla7179 You need to be in the Sun or Vitamin D3 tablets. Vitamin D3 with K2 is better as K2 stops Calcium build up in the body. You can get D3+K2 tablets if not then take separately.

Please also comment on the oil in flaxseeds which is extremely unstable and it goes rancid in a matter of seconds after grinding the seeds. So, it is not advisable to grind the seeds and store them for later use. Grind your seeds immediately prior to using them to avoid the rancidity.

Oil in flaxseed diminish once u dry roast them, then u can ground them and keep stored longer. But if don't want to dry roast, u can grind it & use immediately
