Great video. Stacking is fun, I put a cheap chain of pedals together Left to right: Behringer EQ, Behringer GDi21, Digitech Hot head (similar to ds1) Both drive pedals are set at low gain (volume maxed on hot head) and sound like overdrives with different characteristics on their own, they sound pretty heavy together.

I'm doing same combination of distortion and overdrive, mate. Love it. I made a little mod to DS-1, I removed D4 diode. It made the pedal way more loud than stock unit. My next mod will be changing one of the capacitors to give ds-1 more mids.

@@PhilipJoyceMusician if your version is not SMT circuit board, then it's super easy. Some suggest removing both diodes D4 and D5, but it steals lots of gain from pedal, so one of them is enough. Try it out by unsoldering one of the diode's legs, so it's easy to put it back in case if you need it.

nice demo and nice bit of experimental stacking. Like the Joyo too - great little pedal to have - just by way of a side note... check out Khruangbin's Mark Speer... runs a DS-1 into a pretty clean sounding Fender Deluxe Reverb... his set up is simple - DS-1 into PH-3 into compressor into reverb into delay ...into amp. Achieves a pleasing tone with this set-up... Interestingly he runs the DS-1 with both tone and drive set to zero... and vol. level all the way up.

Awesome demo! Would love to hear your take on adding an IR Loader after the American Sound. I bought the Sonicake Sonic IR and it blew me away! Totally opened up limitless tonal possibilities with the drive pedals and American sound pedal. It's incredible how much an IR for specific Amp Cabs make a difference in tone. I ran it into a Celestion 2X12 and wow! But I was even more blown away when I added a Fender 1959 4×10 Cab which is included free with the Sonicake IR loader. Hopefully you can try it and post an updated review with your Awesome setup!

I haven't to be honest. I view the American sound as a standalone amp in a box solution so if I need it to go direct there's no need to run an IR with it as it has an analog speaker SIM already.

Hey I would add that if you don't want the sound of jfet buffers in overload covering your pedals tones, you should try to keep the output of each pedal low. I know tube screamers and DS-1 have a jfet buffer on input. Not sure about the Joyo. Depends a bit on the jfet but the buffer should distort if you feed nearly a 1V signal, which is like 3 times you clean guitar signal (depends on pickups used). I used to use a clean boost pedal (totally clean boost) to see how the the distortion sound changed by just overloading the pedal input. Also used a little keyboard organ sound as a test tone. If you want the jfet overloading sound I would suggest get a jfet based booster instead, the overdrive will be way better because in a buffer the jfet is configured to behave linear (aka plain, boring) whereas in most booster configs the jfet behaves more like a tube stage.

Sauna Anuas interesting. i have noticed that some drives can kind of collapse when you hit their front end hard with another drive or boost etc. the low end starts to flub out
@saunaanuas7036
@saunaanuas7036 9 жыл бұрын
Philip Joyce Yeah I think thats why boss, ibanez and others use jfet for input. Some opamps, if you feed them way far out will kind of block, even thou the spec for most op amps says they wont ( "non latch operation" ). TL072 is known for phase invert the waveform peaks when getting close to that limit. I think I saw a video here on you tube showing this on an osciloscpe.

Currently experimenting with the DS-1. I like to kick it on for that Steve Stevens, chug sound. Tried stacking it into a SD-1 and I wasn't sold so, someone recommended putting the DS-1 closer to the amp and the SD-1 driving the DS-1. The trick was to lower the gain on the DS-1 so you are just using the EQ band for the thumpy bass sound. Great results so far!

The OD is after the distortion. If you had a third pedal you could use one to boost the front of the distortion for an even more compressed and gained out sound. I don't think it would sound great though as it would start to get very mushy

The Joyo preamp pedal would sound great through your Handsome Devil! I had one for a while, with a Patriot Swamp Thang speaker in it. I run a Joyo British (Marshall) sound into a Bugera V22 tube amp and it sounds tasty. The other guitarist in my band tried it through my amp at a rehearsal and couldn't get over how good it sounded....and he plays through a Marshall! They're really inexpensive pedals (£25-30) you should give one a try....

Hello, thanks for this vid just wanna ask a quick question. I have a blues driver as my main drive and planning to add a ds-1 for my solos. Will it work as well as this example? Thank you
@PhilipJoyceMusician

Timothy De Leon it should. The blues singer is a little softer in the mids, but if you like the tone and it works with your amp then it should be good
@PhilipJoyceMusician
@PhilipJoyceMusician 6 жыл бұрын
Timothy De Leon obtained thing is, if you run it the same way as in this video it will not really give you much of an increase in volume. It will mainly just increase the gain.

This video vindicates me… K. K. Downing nearly force-fed me his fist once when I encouraged him to combine pedals, or as you say, stack… And some of those joyos with mild distortion are great for stacking

Its american pedal, best joyo for distortion & overdrive? How about actone, california or british? Thanks
@PhilipJoyceMusician
@PhilipJoyceMusician 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried those others so I really can't say. I'd imagine the California sound will be the most high gain, and the British sound will be better for classic rock tones

You gotta turn the tone down on the DS-1. Then with a bit of reverb... perfect by itself.

does turning the level up on the DS1 give you a lead boost for solo's? its not apparent on the video (maybe because im watching on a phone without the headphones). im guessing the bypass would mean when its switched off the TS7 and Joyo would set the level and not the DS1?
@PhilipJoyceMusician
@PhilipJoyceMusician 8 жыл бұрын
the more you crank the level of the ds1 the more it will clip the input of the tubescreamer, so you won't get more volume but more distortion. you might get a little more volume out of it but once it starts to clip the pedal next in line you won't get anymore volume. if you wanted it to be your lead sound you could try placing it after the tubescreamer and then it will dictate the overall level. but it will also then be the more dominant tonal character which may or may not be desirable.
@paulmason7777

+Philip Joyce I was actually just thinking more in terms of the way the pedals work. I've got my eye on a Charlie Brown for rhythm and an Angry Charlie for my lead boost. i guess as they are both Marshall emulators i can use the lower gain one first rather than (in your example) the higher gain to drive the next pedal. i like the tone you got from it by the way, really nice sound
@PhilipJoyceMusician
@PhilipJoyceMusician 8 жыл бұрын
+Paul Mason you can order them anyway you like depending on which you like the overall tone of more. you could also take the angry Charlie and put a clean boost before it to achieve more gain. or place it after as volume boost.

Hello i have a disortion pedal and a crybaby wah wah that i would like to combine together, considering that my amplifier isn't that good i always use my disortion pedal to get a really nice sound, and i wanna add my cry baby wah wah to that disortion sound, i have 3 cables but i don't know how to plug them to make them work together? How should i do? Help would be appreciated! this is my first time stacking pedals together, shal my guitar go straight to the amplifier? or to one of the pedals? I wanna have a clean channel, add my disortion to it and then add my wah to the disortion, thanks in advance!

Was the joyo American going into an amp direct, or a mixer/ daw then coming out of PA? I assume the former, if so, I heard you should have the pedal that controls clean tone first because a pedal pre amp into an amp pre amp can cause conflict? What difference would there have been if guitar > joyo >ts > ds1? Thanks for the demo.
@PhilipJoyceMusician
@PhilipJoyceMusician 3 жыл бұрын
In this video the American sound was going into the front of a small crate practice amp set with the eq very flat. No mic, no pa. Just the phone picking up the sound in the room. With these kind of preamp pedals they should generally be last in line if they're gonna be always on. But you can use them like an over drive pedal either if you so choose. There's no right and wrong with these things. Only what sounds good and works for you
@number1Don
@number1Don 3 жыл бұрын
@@PhilipJoyceMusician Thanks, lastly, would you place a loop pedal before or after the joyo? In situation A = playing through amp (joyo would be off so whether loop is before or after doesnt matter) or B = going direct to mixer via di box, so joyo is always ON. Basically, ive got the joyo for if not using a proper amp / amp failure so unsure where the loop should sit. Usually the loop would be my last pedal then would go into the amp...so adding in the joyo, is the loop before the last (joyo) pedal assuming joyo is ON. Joyo is the amp in theory, but would the loop get the joyos tone if the joyo is on,but loop placed before it. Sorry for my ignorance, I appreciate your time and help.
@PhilipJoyceMusician
@PhilipJoyceMusician 3 жыл бұрын
@@number1Don again it depends. If the American sound is being used as the "amp" and then direct to pa or DAW then it would make sense to put the loop pedal before it. But if you had it after , and record a loop into it with the American sound on then the effect is the same. The tone of the joyo has been recorded into the loop pedal.

@@Drewcifer that's true for amp in front of a dirty channel too. I tried putting my DS-1 in the effects loop of my Orange Crush and it sounds a little better than before, where it would just take away all the mids and volume from the signal before hitting the dirty channel.
