Crack-Up is the textbook case of the album that confuses you upon your first listen, intrigues you on your second listen, reminds you of its existence some time later when you forget about it but eventually grows exponentially on you while rewarding you for your patience. It's not the best Fleet Foxes album by any means, but i would have to say this is the best they've ever sounded.

skatasterfi Agreed. It's clearly a great album but it took quite awhile for me to digest Third of May when it was released a couple months before the album. The same probably holds true for the whole album.

Have to disagree with you on this one. However, I liked how you made your case on why you had your reservations and distastes on the album throughout the review. This will probably go down as one of my favorites this year easily. Looking forward to more of your reviews!!

Lol at the Shawn Mendes review comparisons. This response isn't a fraction as bad as that review. I legit recall a comment in the comment thread where someone threatened that 'the Mendes Army is coming for you'...

Kept Woman and Fool's Errand are my least favorite tracks on this record. Interesting. But honestly, I've been listening to this record for a month, and this album is even stronger than Helplessness Blues, I think. The transitions jarred me at first, but after a while I started really appreciating the dynamicism. Also, the debut album? That record was far too inconsistent and bare bones to compare to what followed.
@austinburrowes86113 ай бұрын
This album is Robin’s proudest album and as a big fan also my personal favorite. I think Helplessness blues may be the easiest listen and has catchy tunes, may be the best as far as what most people feel. But crack up is so complex and unique, love the melancholy feelings, I hope their next album is closer to this
@cooper7127 жыл бұрын
I'd give it a 7/10. I can't deny the work and detail that has gone into the lyrics and melodies, but this record is so self absorbed and pretentious I find it hard to really get into a groove with. Also I find that there are very little tracks that stick with me. The only tracks that seem to have a life of their own while also sitting comfortably within the record are Fool's Errand, and Kept Woman. This album strikes me in a very similar fashion to 22, A Million by Bon Iver from last year. I could find myself doing homework or just chilling to this album, but it doesn't present anything for me to grasp on to.

To me,this review doesn't really do this ambum enough justice. Third of may/odaigahara is one of the most complex things the band has ever made. And the the flow and outro really does give alot more weight to the the core song really well. The moments when robert pecknold's vocals are isolated and give way to accapella vocal hatmonies are fucking beautiful. The outro fits really well and has alot of influence from the microphobes or phil elverum. The intro track's detuned guitars and wonky harmonies were intentional,and supppsed to show the more dissonant parts to the album as the band jumps into this fantastic groove,and amazing strings. The jumping of tones in the song too were actually really well executed too in my opinio . Mercastapa was obviously supposed to be a more math rock influenced song that was influenced by the likes of indie. To me,you're really missing out on alot of what the album here is doing. Like,to me this is easily fleet foxe's most beautifuly produced and ethereal album. The vocal harmonies are extremely complex all through the record,and i find the more abstract structures to these songs give alot more creative stratching than the simple verse chorus verse structure of their first 2 records,which i do like,mind you,but i find the more abstract and experimental and ambitious vocal harmonies and structures such as on the other ocean,fool's errand,third of may,cassius,third of may and the intro track to have alot more ethereal compositions to them,and alot more bite to them than on the debut or helplessness blues

Guys, I love the shit out of this album, but stop getting so bitchy just cause Mark doesn't like it. You guys really need to be more comfortable with your own opinions. Just cause someone else doesn't personally like a record doesn't mean you have to stop loving it

Ugh this reminds me of the Paramore self titled review. Fans disliked the video despite Mark saying he thought it was good. Now, I disagreed with Mark on that, in fact, I thought that album was a 8/10. But I could see where he's coming from. So stop disliking for Gods sake.

Dude. You also have to understand. The music on crack up has so many climaxes. The i tro track,and third of may odaigahara climax so times and go all out symphonic rock many times tgroughout the album. I feel like you're critiquing the album for what it could je instead of what it is. I feel like this is easily fleet foxes most grand and most well composed record to date. I don't understand how albums such as helplessness blues,which is way more mellow and way less atmospheric than crack up,you'd prefer even though crack up has alot more melodic subtlty and symphonic edges. I feel like you're critiquing the album by comparing how it is composed to their other stuff,even though let's face it,crack up is much more of a more abstract and odd album structurly compared to their debut and helplessness blues. The breakneck transitions are supposed to show you a more ugly and subtle appprach to the way it is composed which is mean't to highlight the more grand moments on the album. To me it's weird how you're saying that this album doesn't climax eno7gh on some areas such as mercestapa or on the other ocean,but completely ignore when it does so spectacularly on tracks such as the intro or third of may. The more slow moments like on the other ocean and mercestapa and fool's errand and i should see memphis are supposed to show a more lush and gentle approach to the songwriting. And do it in a way more experimental way on mercestapa for example. I'm sorry,but thus review isn't that well made dude. I feel like you're dismissing so many things this record does while not fully exploring alot of the melodic intricacies and etheral production. This review is not thar good.
