The Midnight Special performance back in the 1970s is my personal favourite version of the song (specifically the practice run they happened to have recorded). The drummer once described it like experiencing an exorcism, watching Stevie Perform the song during that particular performance. It's truly Stevie Unleashed, and if you think this one was an awesome performance, you haven't seen anything until you watch that performance. Rhiannon is a moon, magic, and fertility goddess in Welsh mythology, and the queen of the Welsh Faerie folk according to her legend. It's said she fell in love with the Prince of Dyfed, Pwyll, and the two married, however, after nearly a whole decade, they desperately wanted a child but continuously couldn't have one until one day Rhiannon finally found out she was pregnant. The kingdom rejoiced and all seemed well until the baby was born. Rhiannon named her newborn son Pryderi, but in the night after his delivery, he suddenly vanished. Panicked, the nurses who were meant to be watching the infant decided to blame the disappearance of the baby on Rhiannon. Out of fear of what would happen to them once it was discovered the baby was missing while under their care, the nurses killed a goat and smeared the blood on Rhiannon's face and hands, claiming she went mad in the night and murdered and ate her own son. Pwyll, while not wanting to believe this, had no choice but to banish his wife from the palace. She would spend many years outside the palace gates begging and desperately trying to tell the truth about her son's disappearance. Meanwhile, elsewhere in Wales, an infant boy had turned up on the doorstep of a farmer. The couple took the babe in and raised the boy as their own, however quickly noticed he wasn't like other boys. He was growing twice as fast, and aged to a young man, somewhere like 18 or 19 years old, in half that time. He was stronger, faster, and more agile than other boys too. The couple realized this baby was the missing son of Rhiannon and he would return to her, only then her name being cleared as he was indeed alive. She stood by herself all that time and never stood down, knowing the truth and telling it to whomever would listen. She is a protector of women and infants because of this. Pryderi is the main character of the Welsh mythological Chronical of the Mabinogion, and is the only character in it to appear in all Four branches (parts). He would become a legendary hero and god in his own right. Stevie read the name for the first time while in an airport, and fell in love with the name, writing the song soon afterward. The book she had picked up while in the airport had only been loosely inspired by the Welsh lore, very loosely, with Rhiannon being the name of I believe a witch in the story. It was coincidental that the song would line up perfectly with the actual Mythology of Rhiannon, but it did. Stevie garnered a reputation of potentially being a witch herself because of her habit of wearing black and because of this song in particular. She was not and is not a witch, she just simply likes mythology, fairytales, folklore, and wearing black. It got so bad that she actually completely ditched the black for a time in the early 80s, wearing mostly white instead, trying to convince people that no, she is not actually a witch. It's become more of a running joke now, with AHS even playing on it and making a version of Stevie (played by Stevie herself!) who was indeed a white witch. Rhiannon is probably her most iconic song, I would say! Also, others below have mentioned it, if your daughter wants to learn Guitar, have her react to a live performance of Lindsey Buckingham playing Big Love. The one from this same show is a good one to use, it's absolutely phenomenal and absolutely amazing to watch that man play!

This is a more, shall we say, "mature" version. The version from the '76 live show is more emotional with a raw rock and roll power to it. That version also shows why there are still men all over the world still in love with Stevie after all this time. She was a breathtaking performer in her youth and performed Rhiannon with a certain sexuality to it that's missing here, though this version is still great. Hell, anything they do is great.

@@TheAndy1268 No, they began having another full time guitarist with Lindsey during the Dance tour. The first "White Album" tour Lindsey played all guitar parts. The Rumours tour Lindsey played all guitar parts with the exception of "Go Your Own Way", where Ray Lindsey ( i think that's his name) , Buckingham's guitar tech played the acoustic part. The same is true with the Tusk tour and the Mirage tour.

As good as this version is, I considered it a more mellow and subdued version compared to the "fire in the belly" version available from the 1970's show, "The Midnight Special". That version has the raw and yet to be tapped power of Stevie Nicks voice, the tremendous almost reckless abandonment guitar of Lindsey Buckingham, the maniacal drumming of Mick Fleetwood, the rhythmic and hypnotic bass of John McVie and the classy yet mood setting keyboard of Christy McVie. It is so good it leaves me shaking my head in amazement almost every time.

I named my first daughter after this song. There is a live version of this song on their Buckingham Nicks album that’s just awesome to hear. It’s before they joined Fleetwood Mac and I think it has some of their best works still to this day on it. As a huge Buckingham fan, u get to hear how really good he is on the guitar on that album too. She does a few country songs which is neat to hear because her grandfather was a success country singer way back in the day and that’s who inspired her to get into music and writing.

Im Pretty sure Stevie Nicks wrote Rhiannon from the perspective of an Irish Gypsy, so i dont think its about a woman who thinks she is possessed but instead is about a woman who has a close relationship with spirits as the Gypsy's from Ireland tended to be quite spiritual almost "Airy Fairy" type people who lived a life of pacifism and spirituality
@Rhiannon0114 жыл бұрын
"Rhiannon" is the mythology story of the "Welsh mare Goddess" (horse) Rhiannon who in punishment, had to carry people on her back to the "castle".There is a much longer tale to it..but suffice to say Goddess Rhiannon was being punished for falling in love with a "human being"..there is a lot more to it. It has nothing to do with "Goddess of fertility" none at all. When Stevie Nicks wrote the she had just read a book with the name Rhiannon in it and as she wrote the song about the story of "the Mythological Goddess Rhiannon" she had no idea there was a mythological story of "Welsh Mare Goddess Rhiannon" until after she wrote the song. In other words Stevie is rather Psychic to say the least!
