The ultimate break-up song. The ultimate pop song. "Go Your Own Way" has such a passionate, furious driving beat that takes you to such a climactic explosive high, only to bring you down with the realization that it's really about the heartache of ending a relationship with someone you love. This song perfectly captures these feelings of hurt and anger.
"Go Your Own Way" was written by Lindsey Buckingham during the Rumours sessions. Lindsey has said he usually does not write the lyrics to his songs first, but rather initially has the music track in place prior to adding the lyrics. Lindsey's passionate guitar playing is what brings his feelings into his songs, while the addition of the lyrics creates a delicate balance between this guitar playing and putting his feelings into words. "Go Your Own Way" is a truthful song with intense emotions of love and fury that originate from the heart.
The song reflects the feelings he had revolving around the ending of his relationship with fellow band member and romantic partner at the time, Stevie Nicks. The music and lyrics show a man plagued by anger, confusion, and disbelief. Through Lindsey's eyes, he paints quite a different picture of what breaking-up feels like than what Stevie has portrayed about the same relationship in her songs at this time (see the mysterious "Dreams" and the haunting "Silver Springs.")
"Loving you, isn't the right thing to do, how can I ever change things that I feel." Lindsey is trying to convince himself that his love for Stevie is not good for him. By doing this, he will feel comfortable with the break-up, although, in his heart, he does not entirely believe this, saying he can never change the fact that he still loves her.
"If I could, maybe I'd give you my world. How can I, when you won't take it from me." Lindsey would give anything to Stevie - his heart, his soul, in essence, his "world" - if only she would stay. But she doesn't and he acknowledges this. "Maybe" is the key word here. Lindsey is offering her his world, but not all of it. He is still saving something for himself, possibly as a way to keep control over the relationship or to keep his self-respect. Stevie wants her independence though, and for reasons best know to her, she leaves. Lindsey does not understand why Stevie does not want to be part of his world.
Stevie probably did not want to hurt or necessarily leave Lindsey, but she went her own way for reasons best known to her and that he may not have understood. The consequence of her leaving left Lindsey very hurt and confused and he lashed out at her in this song. In between the verses of anger and betrayal are ones of questioning and pain. Although the lyrics in the song are mostly acrimonious, for Lindsey, they were truthful. It is ironic that such a bitter song is really and truly a love song, shouting out final pleas for the woman he loves.

Loving you
Isnt the right thing to do
How can I ever change things
That I feel
If I could
Maybe Id give you my world
How can i
When you wont take it from me
You can go your own way
Go your own way
You an call it
Another lonely day
You can go your own way
Go your own way
Tell me why
Everything turned around
Packing up
Shacking up is all you wanna do
If I could
Baby Id give you my world
Open up
Everythings waiting for you
You can go your own way
Go your own way
You an call it
Another lonely day
You can go your own way
Go your own way

Rumors was their best album... they were living it.... it was real! There are lots of other songs between Mac and just Stevie, decades of great music. I really like "The Dance". When they were touring that album, I got to take my Oldest daughter (she was like 19 at the time) Rhiannon. I was one on the most emotional times ever, singing Rhiannon with her with the band. Music is all about memories.

You are better off, believe me. I was a child of the 60's, a teenager of the 70's. We all thought we were born too late, missed the Beatles and so on. now Im 60, and Im damn grateful I was there for all the great music of the 70's, saw them all in concert when they were young. But damn, Im 60...the ride is almost over. Cherish your youth

I would kill to have been in that arena to witness this! This is absolute pop magic at its best, and at a time when the band were at its most tumultuous---the drugs, the booze, the tension, the drama and genius with all involved. Then amigst all this, working towards their magnum opus "Tusk." Sublime, simply sublime!!!

I find it weird how most if not all of their music was written to another band member about:breaking up/sex/drugs/life........ What a crazy lifestyle they had and they sing along with a song blasting their own selves for :breaking up/, sex/drugs/life. "and now I'd like to do a little song I wrote to Christie to tell her I was pretty much tired of banging her and wanted fresh sex"

i was just 5yrs old when i went to my first concert event.(-: ⭐🍄🍀⭐🆒 Fleetwood Mac along with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band toured through our southern style supposedly sunshine divine Florida state during my mom's "arrive VERY high" late twenties. i have fairly strong memories as music by these artist was/is magical beyond understanding. I'm lucky to have been taken along with mama & my uncle as such a "youngen". mama could be nice to me but it was more often than not she seemed to have no real care for me in her heart. i know it is very much her not me coz i have good understanding of the matter. it is what it was. my "mom" is/was a bit frightening at times. today, my "mama" is still "arriving high" (v. "arriving VERY high") if she gets there. its truth although more than likely she just doesn't arrive at all. she never gets there-never makes it! either way, i remember & love the music, memorized both albums and danced near religious w/mama especially to Rumours the central Florida fairgrounds saw a gigantic and "hippiefied"-© crowd of wide opened souls dancing mingling streaking nude strutting around. just grooving on the music ..the cluttered couple's dashing flashing fresh cut up piles of people.hot from heat scattered about as for my little 5yr old eyes this WOW WOW WOW! mass of music lovers covered the huge lot in assorted circles some bizarre but beautiful triangles ...a field of blankets spread out laying upon the tired earth. those 70's were the days!

Stevie and Lindsey broke up in 76 the last day of recording Rumors. Go Your Own Way was written for the album in 76. Pretty sure she has never had a fling with Petty he was already happily married at the time. She had 2year (76-78) relationship with Don Henley after she broke up with Lindsey and then was involved with Mick Fleetwood.
