It was ANYTHING but a fine engine. I owned two of them. 81/82 they came up with a couple of things that made them a smidge better than the earlier ones. A fine engine is a small block Chevy, the 300 Ford inline 6...etc. These are not even on the same planet as a "fine engine"

Tony Fleming and those interested : FYI the 5.7 Olds diesel was only installed in a Chevy or GMC truck from 1978-1981. Then came the DD 6.2. which ran from 1982-1992. Then came the DD 6.5 turbo that ran from 1993-2002. Then the 6.6 Isuzu Duramax was installed and is still the engine used today. 5.7 olds diesels were installed in Gm Passenger cars from 1978-1985.
@googleusergp5 жыл бұрын
That is correct. They were coded as "N" on the VIN (1978-1980, 5th digit) and "N" again on the VIN (1981-1985, 8th digit). It was GM RPO code "LF9".

ONE down side to an ultra low mileage purchase like this is, if you drive (to enjoy) the car & put considerable miles on it, your "investment" goes South! I'm sure his Pricing reflects 1,300 miles. Having 23,000 or 33,000 miles would knock thousands off! I know the books indicate petty differences, i.e. a few hundred $$ difference, but this is the real world.

This is unbelievable a car like this with the original tires and all original GM parts built from the factory..... Seriously what's the catch your telling me a guy that worked at a dealer and got brain new cars saved this car and never drove it -shaking my head- it's just hard to believe. If I worked at a dealer especially in the 80s (: I would of bought new cars every year.

My Buick Regal isn't a classic but it's an 89 and I still have every history bill sheet with the car since my grandpa bought it new. When I restore it will look like that car. But it won't have any factory chalk marks lol. Also Buick used cheap paint when they painted my car because it started faded after a couple of years. Never trust Macao either! They don't paint you're car according to the factory vin number to which you can find the paint code with and they never gave me my rear quarter trim body side emblems back. Also found the door edge guards in the trunk which I never received a fresh set. But anyway that's the story.

My uncle had one of these new and I saw it for the first time at my dad's wake when he drove up from TX for it. He sold it shortly thereafter and bought a Lincoln LSC. The '81 was in mint condition. Before my dad passed in 1988, we were going to consider buying it from my uncle (his older brother), but I decided to pass on it. The 4-6-8 was still functional, but then again, it was a TX car.

You don't want a diesel engine...now you take the 368 engine and you got a nice big block and this was the last year that 368 was made thanks to the CAFE and gov standards that nearly broke Cadillac.
@googleusergp5 жыл бұрын
That is that is not correct. Both the 368 carbureted engine (VIN code 6) and the DFI 368 (vin code 9) were used through the 1984 model year on commercial cars (limos/short sills cowls, etc.). It was used on passenger and commercial cars in 1981 and in the Eldorado and Seville in 1980.

Yeah, no. He's right and wrong when he calls it a "second generation diesel." Yes it's a second generation Oldsmobile diesel, no it was not a truck diesel. DX block Olds diesel remedied most of the problems w/ the D block diesels. Same basic motor though. The 6.2L Detroit never was a car motor.

How could they justify $18k for that piece of junk in '81? With that GM diesel, that thing would be lucky make it to 50k miles.
@googleusergp5 жыл бұрын
At the time, gasoline had risen to over $1.00 gallon and we had just survived the 1979 gas crisis, so people were concerned but did not want to give up their big cars. So, diesel engines were popular around that time for a while. However, the GM diesel had its problems. Oddly enough a lot of folks rectified them by using strengthened cylinder head bolts. I believe ARP makes ones that work and solve the problem. By then of course, the damage had been done to GM's reputation.
