Thinking it over, I'm fairly sure Heather was a mimic. While her being who she said she was would be consistent with Ian's reaction, as well as him and Yessica not talking to Evan afterward, that could easily be the Mimic planting the same memories in everyone's heads just like it had done several times before. And everything else I can think of lines up with Heather being a Mimic. What Evan noticed about Heather not being exhausted like everyone else is hard to explain if she was real, but would line up perfectly with her being a Mimic. It spent so much effort trying to accurately impersonate a human that it became a dead giveaway when they themselves weren't moving like humans. Then there's the fact that the Mimics had created memories on multiple occasions, but had never suppressed existing memories before. Perhaps the most important detail is the fact that there wasn't any fallout from someone not making it back. The group may not be able to trust there own memories, but the rest of the world would be unaffected. She would've had friends, family, and coworkers who would have reported her missing. The police would've questioned them about her. There would've been records of her existence beyond just memories. On a separate note, they never did have any solid evidence of what the Mimics were trying to do. They had plenty of opportunities to kill everyone while they slept, but they never did. If fact, they never even tried to hurt anyone. It's highly plausible that the Mimics merely took them off course and got them lost to give themselves an opportunity to learn about humans and perfect their mimicry. They might have just wanted to integrate into human society without having any hostile intentions.

@konradoz2018 ай бұрын
Heather was the mimic! Before she was killed the said "Evan it's not your fault" which is what the Yessica mimic said to him at night. That's why he sprung back and swung- he heard those words before
@00Discourse008 ай бұрын
That's just it though; the real horror of an entity capable of manipulating memories, is that there's literally no way to ensure that what you think you know is real. There's another angle to this story which I think is far more plausible, because of two undeniable truths. A: the creature is at the very least sadistic at the end, and B: by exposing itself via shambling, it managed to panic them into running off the path. Both point to the idea that it's only making "mistakes" because it wants to. A creature like that could arbitrarily justify eating your friends while you cheer them on, it could make you think Ian is a deer you hunted together etc etc
@rhunter42dragon8 ай бұрын
@@00Discourse00 I have to be honest, I don't think the evidence supports your conclusions. I see no real evidence that they are in any way sadistic, nor do I see any evidence of them screwing up on purpose. Also, making you think one of your friends is a deer would require more than just altering memories. I think you're more than a little off on this.

I’m of the opinion that the original 5 all went in and all came out. The mimics can’t speak, when they try they struggle and injure themselves, so instead they alter the memories of people to simulate speech, but they can only do this one at a time. When he’s asked for a lighter or the map, he’s alone, same with Jessica. 1 on 1 they can simulate a conversation by putting the words in your head in real time, in a group they need to split their focus, which is why he couldn’t “remember” till his brother told him, it had to split its focus among the group and alter their memories one by one a little bit at a time. When it realised it was being found it it tried to rush and the change become much more noticeable for how sudden it was. Same with the very last one, it knew it had to get someone before they left and rushed what it was doing for a sloppy disguise and reused parts of a conversation. May have even been the same one. The biggest tell the last one wasn’t a real person was the discussion about forgetting. These things can add to memories, not take them away. If that were the case, they’d lure people away from the group and make the rest forget they came on the trip. I think the reason a lot of them move in such a jerkey manner is because they’re desperate and are cannibalising their dead, damaging their nerves and making their acts even less believable. I think this is a rare case where every camper gets out alive, but one doesn’t like what the experience made him realise about himself as a person and what he’s capable of.
@EmpyrealInvective9 ай бұрын
Well done! That was my original intention with the story. I do love all the theory crafting I've seen here so I do want to mention that I think that the 'reality' of their situation isn't as important as how utterly nebulous and uncertain everyone is. I based a lot of this story on the novella: Who Goes There?" by John Campbell which tinkered with the idea masterfully. Thanks for the comment!

@@EmpyrealInvective wow, wasn’t expecting an author response. Thanks for making such a great work, it’s rare to see horror like this. Everyone survives, suffers no lasting injuries, and all of them get home. But it still leaves the characters and the listeners/readers shaken up. Takes talent to write a “good” ending where the protagonist still feels they’ve lost something vital

I think that he was the only human left from the group. In the beginning, he says that they are all gone now. But in the end, he talks about how it would be bad if the mimics got into the world at some point, one of the mimics mess with his memories while he is recanting the story. I think they started picking them off as they got weaker/ started to walk funny. I think the girlfriend was the only other person who was human. I think they kept her captive in their mimic camp with one acting like her boyfriend. And then released her back to her group, of course, after removing memories of her and messing with her memories to explain the slow and exhausted states of everyone else. I believe that they did this to make it so the boyfriend/pov guy lost his mind, so he would forever question what was real and what wasn't.

It was really well-written and your delivery of this is masterful (kudos to the other voice actors!). You never cease to amaze me, man. Keep making us proud! ❤

@@Darksomnium Love the remake. I didn't realize it because I only have read it one time, but I think in the introduction sentences the narrator is referring to the creatures who gave him good memories, and not his group of friends. It turned out really great. I'm not sure whether Heather was a mimic or not, but my gut reaction is that she was. The creatures got him to spill his deepest insecurity, and they probably weaponized it against him in that moment. Either way the story's ending sucks because the only good memories of not being alone the narrator has is from a monster that wasn't even real. And you know, he killed it in 'cold blood'.

Just started watching your narrations a few weeks ago and you have single-handedly reinvigorated my love for creepy stories. One thing thing I will say is that I genuinely LOVED the part at the end where you kind of giving your thoughts about the story, I sure hope you do more of that, maybe in separate shorts or at the end like this video, but hearing you not only as a narrator but as someone who’s just as fascinated with your own theories and takeaways from the stories your delivering was awesome! Thank you and I’m going to keep myself in your back log until the next video

I love that ur re doing old ones. You’re my favorite horror narrator, your voice, Romnex being the female lead at times and hers, the cast you pick and the music you make by hand for your videos make your content just resonate with me in a way that others don’t. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RE DO THE LEFT RIGHT GAME. If you want to, no pressure. I personally loved that story and the way you did it, but I think re doing it with the people you’ve used recently or maybe even some new ones with how you’ve grown and fine tuned your art… it would be a masterpiece.

My theory is that there were no mimics. The one time the main character truly sees a mimic, they're starved, mad and emaciated like everyone else. This suggests that the mimivs are, in fact, fellow travellers. What i think happened was that there was a meetup between 2 groups of hikers who travelled together, 10 in total. However, they soon lost their way and started suspecting those who they didn't know personally. At the end, The protagonist injured his girlfriend, and before they made it out of the woods, the 2 groups split off because their suspicions were too high to trust each other at that point. She wasn't being dragged away, she was being brought to safety away from her attacker. In his delirium, he had attacked and maybe even killed someone he knew. Mass hysteria is always more frightening than some boogeyman in the woods, and this story perfectly portrays that
