Episode 64
Back in April, after we said goodbye to Lucky, we rescued 2 more Belgian Draft Horses from Bowie Texas Livestock. A mare and a gelding. If you don't know Lucky's story...he was rescued from Kemp, Texas through Last Chance Direct Ship Horses and was saved from shipping to slaughter.
Lucky had a horrific eye injury and was in serious need of medical attention. After multiple vet visits and tests we found out that Lucky's eye injury was actually a tumor. The tumor had ruptured his eye. Our plan was to have the tumor removed but when we arrived for surgery Dr. Brown from the Texas Tech University of Veterinary Medicine found additional tumors in other areas of Lucky's body. The cancer had spread and Lucky was suffering and had been suffering for some time. We decided that Lucky's suffering had gone on long enough and we chose to say goodbye. That was the hardest decision we had to make. If you haven't seen the lives of Lucky, I will post a link below.
That night when we got home from the vet, Cory happened to go to Bowie's website and there were two Belgians posted and their ship dates were just around the corner. The foundation had raised money to pay for Lucky's surgery, since the surgery didn't happen we decided to use the funds raised to save these two beautiful healthy horses. This video is about everything they have been up to since we brought them back to our farm. Welcome (officially) to the family Lena and Dutch!
We hope you enjoy this video! Make sure you subscribe to our channel so you don't miss anything happening around here! Because it's never a dull moment!

HF&C Amarillo has offered to help us with anyone wanting to send a gift/donation of Alfa-Pro to the horses. When you call, tell them you are sending a gift to Fletcher Farms Amarillo and they will add the gifts to our account. Alfa-Pro is $17.45 per bag. They do offer a discount if you purchase per pallet (40 - 50 pound bags) $16.95 per bag by the pallet. WE go through about 3-1/2 bags per day to feed all 13 horses (175 pounds per day). We also purchase square bales of coastal hay from HF&C. We use 3 bales per day to feed all the horses. Square bales of hay are $16.75 each.
Thank you to everyone that has sent us gifts of Alfa Pro! The horses love Alfa Pro and we truly appreciate the bags/pallets you have sent to us!

Why in God's name would anyone be so hateful and cruel as to mark two such beautiful and gentle horses to be destroyed. May whom 😊ever did this rot in Hell after a long unhappy, painful and miserable life.🤬

Kill pens are a necessity in the real world. Keeping horses is expensive care horrendous. It's a waste of resources to just bury carcasses. Horse meat is used in a lot of pet foods and actually is eaten all over the world. Instead of rescuing two or three here and there, perhaps steps should be taken to destigmatize the horse slaughter industry and make it more humane and better. Canada has done just that, with safe and ethical treatment of meat horses. There are two sides to every story.
@littlewiseowl4405
@littlewiseowl4405 Жыл бұрын
@fionajane56 There are more than 2 sides, which is part of the problem. Many US horses have drugs in their systems which disqualifies them as healthy meat. Pet, or humans. They have drugs bc they are lame, sick, or aggressive. Our system is broken. Owners and veterinarians need to put them down on site and not traumatized them more. Just another view here. Respectfully...

@@fionajane56No, sometimes there's twenty seven sides to a story. How do we criticize the dog meat market when we treat another animal classified as a pet as meat instead?
@KnightMoonShadow

@@littlewiseowl4405gree! What needs to happen but most likely never will, is to regulate breeding so that we don't get inundated with all of these horses. I have been to a slaughter house and seen the process first hand. What I will say is that the horses are killed with a captive bolt. What I will also say, is that the horses in the slaughter pen's are in horrible condition. Horses are sold by weight, by the pound! This is a big reason why the drafts go to slaughter because they bring more $ due to size. With this being said, the absolute terrible condition these horses generally are in and to even consider them fit for dog food is disgusting! I won't even get started on OTTB'S, Off Track Thoroughbred.... Also, I'm sure the horse you pulled the shoes off is going to be something sore.

As long as there is a paying market & no other paying alternative, desperate or uncaring people will send their equines to auction where traders buy some of them for the meat market.

They send the draft horses because they have grown to old to work. Mostly the Amish. If they have to pay to feed it then it best earn its weight. This is how farmers think. They are not pets they are like tractors. They do not see them as living souls. Very sad.

yes the amish seem to figure quite prominently in animal abuse and sending to slaughter rescues. they need to improve their sense of compassion and reduced their sense of entitlement, exploitation and killing of animals becuase it seems very psychopathic.@@Sophiecjp

ooo Lena is coming in season! She is checking out the guys. Looks like she likes Fin a lot as do the other ladies. Always sweet seeing them switch partners mid-season. Just shows that mares would like to be in control of their breeding also. Instead of being forced to tolerate which ever stallion we choose for them. Or insemination...... I really liked the way Lena trotted along beside the buggy without need for the halter. Just shows the quality of her training and how much she enjoys where she is now.

I really like to have horses get access to food all day. Some people use hay bags. What do you think? And as far as shoes are concerned, I’ve heard that many in the horse world aren’t fans (I hope you don’t mind questions). Liam is actually walking much better in this video than he was when we first got him. He bends his knees where before he’s wasn’t doing that.

I’m so confused. Do the Amish abuse their horses? Kill pens? I’ve learned so much since supporting you and all you do- but I’m still unable to comprehend it. I’m so glad you rescued them. They will finally know love not just work.

Yes, many of the Amish do abuse their horses. They view them as a commodity, and when they're old, sick or not able to work anymore, they dump them at an auction.

Julie, I have an idea if you have time. How about a video that introduces each horse in the order that you acquired them? As I watch, I am trying to memorize who is who!!! Lol!! Love what you are doing!!

I think you do such a fabulous job with your horses, especially the two new ones that you just received. I wish that I could give a lot more than just my thoughts in telling you how much it means that you’re doing such a great job. With your big hoof foundation. These big, beautiful animals sure do you need a chance and it’s nice that you got to that you don’t have a lot of problems medically with 🥰❤️🙏 keep doing the great work you’re doing and God bless you both you and your sweet husband and your foundation🙏

It's so special that you guys bought them both so their bond can remain forever. This will make their entry into the herd less stressful for them both and lots of less work for you.

Went to a ranch today and they had 2 probably retired percherons for soft, quiet rides. Why dont more people ride drafts is a mystery.

I love watching these good horses saved so they can have a retirement. I'm a bit sad for Dutch. Lena loved him and he protected her. What a hussy she is; but Finn is a very handsome big boy. Dutch found a friend, at least. The drone footage on your intro shows the ranch in Winter and it looks very bleak. Now that there is fresh grass, please show us by drone the now green fields!
