Flexwing Microlight Vlog - Flying solo on my PeaBee Episode 8

I've finally flown solo. This is the video you have been waiting for. My solo flight on my PeaBee. I'm so pleased I had all the training from Jim as this just felt just like a lighter version of the aircraft I have been learning on. I would encourage anyone going down this route to get flight instruction. I can be flown with out, but as a pilot you don't know what you don't know unless you have been taught.
Having flown a Paramotor for years, I thought I would try to learn how to fly a flexwing Nanolight PeaBee, it's like nothing else I have flown before. Join me on my Paramotor to Peabee conversion. It might seem simple but flying a flexwing, after having flown Stick and rudder aircraft for so long was not an easy experience and I'm glad I'm getting training.

Hi Giles, thanks for your videos, I’ve watched them all once when I started my training here in the US. They are terrific and Jim seems like a great instructor, i definitely learned things from them because when I was doing my training last year I would be flying and thinking hey…. I already learned that from Giles and Jim. So have you ever thought of posting your complete videos instead of just the shorter edited versions, I am sure there is so much more information in them, and to be honest they are the best instruction videos out there. I just find them to be a great supplement to my training. I have had to take a year off since my solo due to a shoulder injury and am going to finish my training in a month and started rewatching your videos and those by Paul Hamilton too. I am sure I’m not the only one that would love to see your complete training videos.

Hi Greg, sorry for the delay in responding. Firstly I hope your shoulder injury is getting better. I have seriously thought about making some longer ones/ training videos and I have to admit I'm really apprehensive as training should be with an instructor. I like the journey element of getting it right and wrong, the highs and lows of learning to fly. I like your suggestion about making the videos longer, I'll have to see if I still have the original footage to have another go, good idea :). Don't be afraid to let me know how you are doing with your flying training in any of the videos, it will be great to know how you are getting on.

Wow, let me know how it goes. I was really struggling with the weather, considering I started in July. I managed to get the last few flights in, in a very short space. This flight video has been held back, but I hope its been useful. They have certainly helped me after each flight.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 There's you and another guy I follow, you have both gone sub 70 solo within a week of eachother on here, I started flying in Jan and have around 40 hrs, the last 10 incorperating many touch n go's etc, Im close, but like you, its the getting the rounding out or flaring to perfection and every landing is different, so its practice practice practice. Lets hope for some clear days with low winds, thanks. ;-)

Thanks for taking me along for the jouney i had a similar experiance when i went from a air creation tanarg to my redback trike (although mine was a twin seater) I still remember the day i went solo i revised all the things that my cfi would say My trike you could just plop down unlike the tanarg that required you to stall the wing while hovering just above the ground Welcome to aircraft ownership i actually bought my airborne redback before i went for my first test flight There is nothing like getting good weather with no one to contest the aircraft (eg renting)

Hi Zwebx, its been a wonderful journey since then and I can't believe its been 4 years since this happened. I've rented aircraft when I had my PPL back in 1996 and was frustrated with not always getting the aircraft when the weather was good. I've never flown a Tanarg but I've heard some interesting stories from those that have flown them. ;)

@@hans2637 I'm heavier than you are (78kgs 172lbs), Jim is 95 kgs (209lbs) and it climbs so quickly. I was climbing out and most of the time i was easing off the power and pulling the bar in. I have the Moster Silent on the PeaBee and the Moster Plus on My Paramotor, both very powerful. The PeaBee feels more powerful as it's turning a 140cm prop.

The wing is already at the forward trim point, so for the time being I'll have to just apply a little rearward pressure (its not much really). I hear there might be some modifications for trimming but we'll have to see what comes out of the Flylight skunkworks.

Going back through these older VLOGs Giles and really enjoying the journey. Not sure whether it's covered else where but with alternative training routes it would be useful to know the make up of your own journey. Like you I've had a PPL(A) so looking at whether I should get good initial instruction to solo standard or do full NPPL.

I think we all have our own experience to bring to the flying journey. The lessons with Jim were great for me flying Sub70, the extra lessons with Mark, Terry and Shelley just took me to a higher standard for the NPPL. If I had now experience, I think the NPPL restricted licence would be a really good foundation. I hope that helps.

thank you. I have the MY19 Moster Silent. The idle was a little low but I love the fact it will stop with the prop not turning so i can thermal soar in the summer months.

Hi Giles, do you rotate (pitch up) when your pitot indicates a certain airspeed? And if so, what speed is that? Thanks for the videos and I wish I lived in the UK so I could train there to fly a Sub 70.

Hi Tom, assuming a normal take off (not short field etc), the bar starts to come forward at I'm gaining airspeed, and keep feeding the bar forward until the nose lifts off, then it's smoothly back to the hands off trim position. The trike would lift off eventually but the speed would be very high and unsafe to do so, also the take off run would be very long. I hope that helps. I hope you've enjoyed the content up till now?

Hello Alwyn, and welcome to the channel. This is a private disused airfield called Upottery east of Dunkeswell. Its quite famous as it's where the 101th Airborne launched out of. I hope that helps. The disused airfield is heavily used by non flying as well as other flying activities.

Giles out of interest , what instruments are you carrying , I saw the Hall airspeed meter and the compass , but did I spy another one on your Peabee ?

Yes, I have a Silva Compass on the lower beam. I also have a Tach and Cht. I'm trying to find the best plact for the Hall ASI, Ben Ashman suggested it needs to be higher up but then its not convenient to see. A little thing to sort. Is that what you were referring to?

Thank you. I think I mention it in the video, it's 25 horse power. It's the Moster 185 Silent engine, it turning a 140 propeller. The wing is a Fox 13 T made by Aeros.

Not better than paramotors, just different. One compliments the other. You can operate away from airfields but they doo need a good surface to operate from. Have a look for my 2020 Bore Chasers video and you'll see what they can operate from.

Yes it is the ASI. From memory, I think it's called a Hall ASI.

Yes, I learnt on a twin seat so I could complete the BHPA syllabus, then soloed on the PeaBee.
