@@Lewis2110 I don't know all that much about it tbh. We're very much the end user. We have a display in the tower, it shows us where drones are and what they are, that's about as much as we need. :)

Interesting stuff from a real-life ATC person. Love the fact that he is just a down-to-earth guy (maybe a bad pun for an air traffic controller!) and that when he didn't know something he didn't blag it, but just said he didn't know. It felt like a chat over a couple of beers in the pub.

Thanks for the info, I had been trying to get permission to fly near Blackpool pleasure beach BUT it's too close to the airport, i emailed them and no response, after listening to this i did exactly what was said, submitted forms and info and a flight plan and 20 minutes later had mt permission, awesome!

I managed to get some same-day clearance to fly within (admittedly on the outskirts) of my local airport FRZ. ATC couldn't have been nicer, I gave them (probably more than) the information they required about where I wanted to fly and very quickly got a phone call followed by an email giving me permission. really positive experience!

Getting the inside view, especially from a professional air traffic controller, is fantastic and so helpful 👍 I do have a question about Danny...if Danny were to see something that was of interest, and it was a spur of the moment flight as they were travelling to a different location, could they call the tower and gain permission to fly ( with obvious restrictions from ATC, altitude restricted, distance from the controller ect.) Or are those permissions reserved for emergency services only?

Probably not tbh. At EDI we need time for the admin and risk assessment to be done, I'd imagine other places are similar. We state within 72 hours to get your permission back to you, but it's usually a lot quicker.

@@ClanLawrence the commercial aspect of aviation 👍 I guess they would charge superman if they could...🤣 The port of Dover has a pure security FRZ, they have been charging since 2019...its cheaper to hire a cherry picker than do a survey with a drone 🙄

Sean, Could you pkease look into your live streaming setup. Your is the only live stream I cannot watch due to the intensive buffering every 3-4 seconds.

Hey! We don't get this feedback from others and our setup is precisely what KZbin recommends. In fact our tech is far over the requirements etc. The only thing which stops me pushing yo 1440p or 4K streams is to avoid this type of issue. Have opened a ticket with support and will look into it. Thank you for the feedback!

Thanks for the video, some interesting topics lately 😊 I’m curious about people’s thoughts on informing atc of planned flights just outside the frz’s? As an example there’s a site I’d like to photograph that is less than 150m from the marked boundary, is it worthwhile letting them know, or am I setting myself up for being told no?

Personally, I'd say if you were right at the edge of the Runway Protection Zone, in line with the Runway, a heads up that you're there would be nice, outside of that, I wouldn't really be interested. Ask other controllers and you'll probably get different replies though, and at the end of the day you're under no obligation to contact the airport at all.

These are my local Airports advertised operating hours "Airport is open seven days a week, British Summer Time: 08:00-18:00, Winter: 08:00-17:00" Does this mean as there will be no one manning the tower outside these hours so no one to contact that I can fly my drone legally outside of these hours?

Depends on the airport. Some airports will have 24 hour ATC despite being closed over night. For airports that do shut up shop overnight, you might find that the FRZ also ceases to exist. What airport is it?

@@ClanLawrence It's Leeds East Airport (formaly RAF Church Fenton) No ATC after hours as far as I know and the Tower is vacated, there is after hours operation but only by special request. I don't wish to fly at the airport but there are some nice areas within their FRZ that I wouldn't mind getting some aerial shots of.

@@mickemmett6828 Having looked through the AIP, it would actually appear that all FRZs are permanently active, even if the airport is only open at certain times. It's maybe worth dropping them an eMail, you may be able to negotiate a blanket permission for when they're closed 🙅 [e-mail]

Seen this today ( 8 july ) was in jersey C.I last week want to to get permission to fly in a FRZ ( St Brelade bay ) but I was told to fill a form and need days notice .. wanted to fly on the day as weather was good . Can’t say when in future as don’t know what weather be like plus wind as I have Mavic Mini .. so it seems you can’t get permission on the day itself .. which is very disappointing..

@Geeksvana I managed to get myself an invite to a CAA hosted Teams meeting this morning about RID. All i did was ask if the meeting would be available to view online later and the next thing i get is an emailed invite. I did join the meeting and very much remained muted, it was fairly interesting.

Hey! Good to see you! The CAA are generally pretty open with their webinars and want people to get the info. I only wish they did release recordings of all these discussions. I think they would bring a lot more people along with them, rather than having sudden shocks!

Nothing as awesome as that! (Thank you for the service). I am very much an enthusiast and have surrounded myself with aviation since very young. Ironically, I was until very recently afraid to fly! Thankfully that has changed and I am getting to enjoy more manned experiences finally!

People thinking pilots can't see a drone made me laugh. I've flown enough back in the day to have seen my share of birds when landing, taking off and in the circuit. If you can spot a bird in flight you can spot a drone. Regarding anti avialton Karens, years ago at Lands End we had a nice little flying club before it went all-commercial, and a couple of us got ground to air tickets to work the tower for sundays when we (aero club) had the airfield to ourselves, and these Karens on the phone would just make up stuff or to be charitable, they would be seriously mistaken 99% of the time.
