Karl emailed us a question about a choice he has to make to leave his aerial mapping job to go fly as a co-pilot at a part 135 charter company. After your flight training is complete your next mission is to find that entry level pilot job to reach 1500 hours to get to the airlines. Mike and Sean breakdown the pro and cons of each job and talk about the other flight time building pilot jobs available in today's market.

Quality of flight time doesn’t matter any more, especially for regionals. I went to a part 141 college aviation program, flight instructed for one year, went to Envoy for one year, and then was hired by a major airline with only 1,567 total flight hours (550 turbine). Get those hours to the minimum requirement as soon as possible so, you can advance your career as soon as possible.

I flew traffic watch over Southern California freeways in a 172 to build time. It was super quick. Now I have my CJO with sky West and I'm waiting for training 🙂

Great podcast guys! Honestly being so new ALL of those options sound great. I only have about 7 hours in my logbook but looking forward to all of it. I am hoping there are opportunities for me with being a part time CFI or doing some of these other jobs on the side while I keep my 9-5 to retain the pay and health benefits for my family while building those hours.

Some extra info about flying 135, several regionals will give you seniority/bonuses for 135 expierence. Off of the top of my head I know PSA does, maybe republic or mesa partake as well. Getting captain pay the minute you join the operation is quite the reward

Interesting. I’m not terribly interested in going the 121 route… but that being said, how much 135 experience are they looking for in order to provide that seniority or bonus? I’d like to know so I can let my 121 seeking friends know.

The issue I have with pipeline and banner towing is that it isn’t “quality” time. Buzzing around VFR isn’t getting you experience that’s valuable to the airlines.

“Buzzing around VFR” is better than being a flight instructor that never actually flies the airplane and instead baby sits other student pilots at a puppy mill that has you going to do stalls over the same lake for the 6th time today. Any pilot flying a light aircraft solo that is highly vulnerable unfavorable conditions (I.e thunderstorms, crosswinds in a tailwheel aircraft) is getting both better stick and rudder skill time than any other pilot and true decision making practice.

As long the skydiving pilot doesn't also simultaneously do the jumping like KZbinr Trevor Jacob everything should be just fine...
