-SPOILER ALERT, lol- in the chronicles, there are two deaths that pull at me harder than the others; while Strum’s death brings emotions due to stoic duty in the face of impending doom, and faces it like a sodding knight (you know!), Flint’s death hits me hard every damn time i read it! it’s foreshadowed, it’s that creeping pestilence called Time! and the ONLY reason i don’t skip the risk of drenching the pages in tears is because Tas does that for us, with Fizban right there to give us comfort…truly excellent writing! thank you for this…

Amazing video again. The only Companion to have a father was Laurana. The rest were orphans (except Tas who might as well be due to the nature of Kender) and so I believe Flint was very much a father figure for them.

Excellent tribute to Flint who was such a wonderful character. My only quibble is with the idea that Flint knew Kitiara's message was a trap, since his own inner monologue shows he thought it was possible Kitiara was telling the truth. "Flint, looking around, could see no sign of anybody or anything. Shivering, he huddled in his cloak, feeling apprehension creeping over him. What if Kitiara was telling the truth? What if Tanis was with her? What if he was dying? Angrily, Flint forced himself to stop thinking about that. He almost hoped it was a trap!" -Dragons of Spring Dawning, Book II, Chapter 3 And that residual doubt helps explain why Flint went along with Laurana's decision as it is impossible to believe he wouldn't have taken action to prevent her from going if he was certain it was a trap.

Their deaths both hit me in "the feels." Even multiple decades later. And you are correct, they are both different. Sturm felt like I was robbed of something that I didn't realized I lost until after I lost it while Flint was so much more personal. Like I lost a family member. I give huge credit to the authors and the people who brought them to life only for us to witness their passing.

I really don’t understand my feeling at his death. I read the book when I was 11 and am now 45 so you would think after rereading these books over 30 times that I would get less sad. However I cry the same everytime I came to that part of the trilogy.

Flint's death was pointlessly tragic. He died from a Heart Attack. I know he was old, but honestly, it was an un heroic death for a beloved character. I'm sure many might argue it's merits, but I fail to see why Weis and Hickman would write out a vital character like him...

I thought I had seen every DL piece of art, but I always find something new watching your videos. Flint's death always hit me harder than any other character because it was so relatable maybe? You don't often have friends die in real life fighting a dragon, but Flint's death was very realistic and it felt like losing a grandfather all over again. I'm re-reading the books now and enjoying Dragons of Dwarven Depth where Flint's character is explored in more detail. Keep up the great work!

I too have read the original Chronicles at least a dozen times, possibly 3 times that much. Flint's death makes me tear up every single time. It's actually quite reasonable to "hate" aka be predisposed against the enemies of your parents and your people TBQH, especially for people like dorfs. On the contrary it's relatively naive and dangerous to ignore the past behavior of people.

It’s the idea of lumping an entire group with the actions of specific people that I am speaking to. You are right to always consider the individuals past behavior.

@@DLSaga I'm not saying it's fair, honestly seeing your reply now I think we agree that it's a natural and reasonable self preservation mechanism but it's certainly a flawed one, and a hindrance in dealing with outsiders and former foes in an multicultural and multispecies world. IMO it's a very human failing that makes well written characters like Flint more relatable and interesting. Thanks for making these videos btw, I've been digging them and I hope you keep up the good work.

I think you missed something important about Flint. I think most of what he SAID (regarding bigotry and everything else), was only for reaction. He didn't believe almost anything he said. This is evidenced best by his dealings with the Orc King. He never treated him unfairly. Even conceded a great swath of his own kingdom to keep peace even after being attached in his own home. I think his dark rough talk is his version of a sense of humor, and I can relate.
