The service time was the problem for the astros. Tucker was a rental. This was about as good as the astros were going to get. They got about the best they were going to get. At least they got something. Instead of letting him walk. They would have got less at the deadline. The astros were good enough to win the division that's it that's as far as they were going.

I felt Kyle Tucker was pretty offended by not getting that $2.5m in arbitration and not getting a good extension offer when Yordan got one. No way Tucker would give Astros a hometown discount. Regardless of Crane's dislike of longterm deals, Tucker would be gone in a year. Not saying I love the trade, just that there was no resigning Tucker.
@1TightMinute
@1TightMinute 28 күн бұрын
@@UtinniUtinni the only reason Altuve is still here is bc he was willing to take a smaller contract when he had leverage. Yordan deal is also very team favorable. You’d be surprised to see how little he makes. The Astros rewarded Altuve in the backend bc he ain’t worth what he just signed now but still it was a huge gamble for him. I’m sure they will reward Alvarez also. The wouldn’t pay springer even though springer didn’t end up signing that long or Correa, or Bregman, no reason to believe they would resign tucker or even Framber. Rumors a few years back were they offered him a similar deal to yordan which would have voided his last two years of arb and given him an annual salary of just shy of 30m. Tuck knows he’s going to get paid.

I wouldn't say Tucker didn't get extension offers. I'm sure he did, but likely wouldn't take a team-friendly deal like Yordan did. Their deal with Yordan was like taking candy from a baby, but I'm sure Yordan is happy with it. I sure am. I am glad Tuck is gone and that drama isn't lingering. I can't wait to see how Cam Smith progresses. He looks to be the real deal and after the Astros work their voodoo magic on Wesneski, he might contend for a Cy Young award.

Usually when a player is traded on the final year of their contract before free agency, it means they are going to be elsewhere the following season. Aroldis Chapman is the only player I could think of who was traded by the Yankees to the Cubs at the deadline in 2016 and returned back to New York as a free agent.

He was less of a cornerstone than Springer was when he walked for nothing. Less than Correa was when he also walked for free. They were only 0.500 with Tucker in the lineup in 2024 and 0.600 with him at home watching on the tube. He's not as valuable as most people want to make him out to be. Position players just aren’t worth the massive contracts they’re getting. Over 162 games, frontline pitchers have a bigger impact on winning. Plus, he had far too many disappointing playoff performances where a great position player can make a big difference and help secure a championship (look at Yordan). Altuve, Correa, and Springer also excelled in those big playoff moments.

I’m not ready to declare the Astros the clear winners of this trade, but there are some intriguing factors to consider. That said, I do wish they had landed at least one more top young prospect. Hayden Wesneski could prove to be the sleeper in this deal, potentially tipping the scales in Houston’s favor. The Astros have a remarkable track record of revitalizing pitchers like McHugh, Will Harris, Morton, Pressly, Greinke, Cole, and Verlander-and even more recently with Yusei Kikuchi. They’re masters at maximizing talent. Just look at Cristian Javier: his 92 mph fastball defies expectations at the MLB level. It’ll be exciting to see how Wesneski develops under their guidance, especially with the added boost of playing in front of friends and family. Add in the potential for Paredes to take a leap forward, as analytics suggest, and the possibility of Cam Smith realizing his full potential, and this trade could swing heavily in the Astros’ favor. If those pieces click, the Astros could emerge as clear winners of this deal, regardless of Tucker’s performance in Chicago. With Jim Crane’s proven track record as an MLB owner, it’s hard to bet against the Astros. And with bargaining chips like Framber and Pressly still in play, the team remains well-positioned for future moves. The team also made a significant offensive upgrade in 2024 that Astros fans should keep in mind. They replaced a 0.180 batting average with one of the most productive catcher duos in terms of offensive run production. On top of that, they also improved defensively compared to the player they replaced. I'm optimistic for 2025.

A replay of a Cubs/Angels game from this past year is on right now. Literally at the exact moment you were saying how bad Suzuki is in right field, I watched him drop a routine-ish fly ball. If he's not dropping a fly ball, he's hurting himself trying to catch one. And this guy is complaining about being DH. He did homer in the same game, but it wouldn't bother me very much if the Cubs moved him. He justhas to waive his no-trade clause But who else would put him in the field?

For those saying Jim won’t spend the money, Altuve signed 2 “short term” contracts , a 7 year and a 5 year, netting him $324 million dollars making him the highest paid 2nd baseman in MLB. Who’s to say those other “short term” contracts wouldn’t have done the same for Correa or now even Bregman? They just had to go earn those multiple contracts. We were never going to sign Tucker because he never took the first contract. I’m fine trading the guy to retool on the fly. I do think we could’ve gotten a little more, but this team is deep on pitching and should still win the division. And then hopefully you see where we are in 2026. And maybe we still sign a FA for the outfield or 1st base?
@kenan5646
@kenan5646 29 күн бұрын
Reports are that Crane does not want to go over the next CBT threshold and signing Bregman would have nearly send them over that limit if they kept Tucker on the team. Trading Tucker frees up ~$20M for next year which can be spent to address the problems at 1B/OF. The ALW does not seem to be getting any better (Rangers owner said they wanted to reduce payroll, Angels and A's are not serious contenders, no one knows what Dipoto is thinking). The Astros can reasonably still win the division next year without having to go over that self-imposed salary cap. The team has $50M of dead money in Jose Abreu, Montero, and LMC Jr that comes off the books for 2026. This offseason is not over. Let's see how they allocate Tucker's salary (and possibly Bregman's), but I think Crane is ensuring they are under that threshold for 2025 and then going to shell out the money needed for a 2026 reload. I just thought it was going to be Framber being traded and not Tucker.

The Astros have tons of dead weight this season with the Abreu & Montero contract and he wasn’t going to sign with us next season since Crane won’t sign over 6 year contracts. In exchange we got good value for 2026 and beyond when we don’t have that deadweight to go get players. We made the best of an expiring contract unlike we did with Correa, Springer, Cole, Melton, and soon Bregman. I like the Astros trading Tucker, I don’t like what they got. Got 2 3Bs. Paredes can be moved to 1st and his swing is perfect for Minute Maid, but Cam Smith is a pure 3B. To me this was basically a signal that the Astros have given up on Bregman and traded for Cam as his replacement. I want to keep Breggy so I’m not a fan of that, but if Cam Smith becomes a good player like the Astros clearly hope he will then it could be a good move. I don’t really care about the pitcher the Astros got, he doesn’t move the needle on this deal. He’s just a mediocre player thrown in last minute to sweeten the deal.

Ben is wrong. You can’t spend what Kyle wants on one player. Those 11 year, 400 to 500 plus million dollar deals are mistakes. Good to great trade. We’ll see.

the Astros lost 3 out of 4 players because they never got anything for George Springer and Carlos Carerra and maybe alex bregman they should have had more players to have in their farm system by now because they only pay short term all of these guys wanted long term contracts!!!

The Astros got fleeced again just like the Mets Verlander deal. James Click was a better GM. Cubs gave up nothing. I don't plan on watching them going forward. Jim Crane ruined this team by bringing in Jeff Bagwell.

The MLB has become a 3 team league. Those 3 are spending100s of millions more than anyone else. There's something wrong with that. Fans aren't going to support their local knowing they have no shot at winning a WS. Not gonna happen. MLB changing its own rules to keep intrest high proves theres a problem. How boring is it knowing the 2-3 same teams meet in the Series every year for the next foreseeable future. Boooring.
