Its 106 Degrees today!!! Its HOT but the bass are biting if you know where to look! The frogging, flipping, and punching bite is going strong! Come along for a day on the water with Matt as he patterns bass on a hot Summer day and explains why he's making changes along the way.
A lot of anglers are afraid to fish in the Summer heat. If you're willing to get out there and know where to look it can be incredible shallow water fishing. Understanding shadows and bass behavior makes all the difference! Matt started off his day on Clearlake with a plan to frog and flip. He began with 3 rods on deck; a frog rod, a flipping stick with a 1 oz tungsten weight, and a flipping stick with a 3/4 oz jig.
The bass started biting on the first cast and Matt never pulled out another rod. As the day progressed he dialed in the pattern and fine tuned his color choices to get more bites. The combination of frogging the edges of cover and flipping deep in the thick patches is a 2-pronged approach that can be applied on any fishery that has heavy cover. Below is a breakdown of the gear Matt was using throughout the day.
The baits...
1) Frog- River2Sea Bully Wa 2 size 65 (Little Allen Color): bit.ly/2axyR2a
2) Flippin' Jig- No Jack Size 3/4 oz (Hematoma and Molting Craw): bit.ly/2fx8YBI

Jig Trailer #2- Strike King Rage Craw (Junebug): bit.ly/2uoqsLJ

Bobber Stop- Peg X Stopper: bit.ly/2bHjowk
Creature- RI Kinky Beaver (Green Pumpkin, Magic Craw Swirl): bit.ly/2XQ1kJ1

This might sound weird but it really helps my confidence when you show things like breaking off, getting snagged, and fish getting away. Another fine video Matt! Beside your mastery of fishing, I'm always amazed at how the places you fish always seem to be free of other boats and jet ski traffic. Most of my fishing is at The Lake of the Ozarks, which is like fishing at sea during a tropical storm. In fact, the last time I had a chance to fish (which was at LOZ) I got slammed into a dock and shattered the yoke on my Ultex and then, once home, I discovered that my steering tube was snapped in two. Big boat's have ruined that lake for both day and night fishing. Yeah, even night fishing. I took my son-in-law out for a night of fishing and at 11:30 at night we were taking water over the bow of my boat while trying to fish by a marina. All because of non-stop barge traffic. I need to move closer to Table Rock!

BIG BAITS AND BIG BLOCKS If you go back through their video archives you will find videos on every type of structure we encounter on lakes across the county. They may not be titled as “fishing ledges” or “fishing deep weedlines” but they are all there. Actually some may be titled specific enough that they will be easy to find. I know when Matt fished Guntersville recently, he was fishing deep ledges. Good luck

There's nothing better than watching a bass slam a frog. Everything from the pop, the hook set and the boat flip is entirely too much fun. It's an incredibly small list of alternatives that I would rather be doing.

The frog catch at 4:49 really shows why you need a 7'3" xheavy and 65 lb Braid. The frog catch and the flippin catch right after it also say something about the expride itself, really all of the catches were a test of the rod, but those 2 were back to back , I know a lot of rods that would snap when trying to horse fish out of grass like that. Great video as always!

At 11:30 the most important thing was said in this video. Losing your cool when you break off or a fish comes unhooked will cost you more than that fish. Matt did exactly the right thing, kept his cool, picked up another rod and right away had the pain from just seconds earlier erased.

Perfect timing on the video. Just spent most the day yesterday in 100° heat here on the Central coast flippin the tules. Not a smokin' bite but I jacked a 6 lb. after playing cat n' mouse with the ol' girl! I love it when you're quiet and still and can see them moving through the bullrush and knocking stems around! 😎 I flipped in on this pig a few times and then was that guy that stomped, spit, and cussed because of hang ups then tied on a watermelon red flake S/K Rodent and smoked that fish! She repayed the favor by going hot after spending a few minutes in my livewell by cracking the livewell. It took me a bit after releasing her to figure out why my f'ing boat was sinking and the bilge pump kept coming on! Headed to Tackle Warehouse today to buy a new Dobyn's flippin' stick and then home to start my livewell repair! 😂 Then....back to the lake! Fish On boys. Thanks for the video stoke!

Good video Matt. I had fun watching to the point that I have decided to get up early in the morning and drive an hour and a half to a water discharge lake from a large electrical generating plant n northern Okla.. The water is warm near the discharge all winter and the bass have the ability to stay active and feed all year round. They grow larger as well. Well, out of my enthusiasm from your video, I'm heding there at 4:00 AM and plsn to be on the water by 6:00 AAM. I've never fished that lake before however, I've never taken on a challenge that I did not expect to win. This one in the morning is no different.

Matt, I get why you use a 7,1:1 ratio to bring in more line quickly.. I have always used a 5,1:1 on my extra heavy rods thinking I needed the extra torque they provide to really pull the fish out of the cover. Is this not exactly right? Thanks for all you and Tim do!! Love it!!

If say, 85 degree water isn't optimal, then when a cold front or cool front with rain and wind comes in, that will aerate and cool the water same. Shouldnt that make the LMB happier and fishing better? I'm not talking about a door-slamming cold front, just a drop in daytime temps from like 90 to 80?
