Steve, This was Great ! "Goats Head Soup" is my second favorite Stones album, "Sticky Fingers" my first. Your review was superb,and I loved the film footage. I'm always amazed watching Micks dance moves ! I loved watching Charlie's face on some of the clips,sometimes he looks like "Why am I doing this"? and Mick Taylor is an extraordinary guitarist.I love Keith for just being Keith. In my opinion..there isn't a bad song on this album,and I can't wait to get my copy that I pre- ordered for my husband (Who is a bigger fan than me !). I loved listening to your narration,and as I said the great clips you included.I'm looking forward to your next video. I appreciate the hard work,love, and dedication you put into this series. I'm loving these videos. The footage is so great! The song Angie is very beautiful and a highlight in that era of The Stones. The guitar intro and piano are incredible and Mick's vocals are perfect. The whole album is so good but this is the highlight for me. I loved hearing your perspective on this. I still can't get over how chaotic and tragic their lives are at this point and yet they create something so powerful. Loved this!

Glad you chimed and let me know Melinda. You are a RnR'er for sure! Listening to Angie brings back to 1975 when I first heard it, very innocently as a 14 year old. IT is flawless....and delivers what it intended to deliver. I get it how that would be the highlight. I adore your work. Thank you so much. The best docs i seen on any bands. I'm a musician living in Boston. In the early 90's i spent a bit of time with Jimmy Miller. Hanging, partying, driving him to recording jobs or here & there. We got along great. People were always lining up to ask him questions. He was very gracious. I stayed away from that mostly. But on some longer rides we'd talk. I asked him about "Angie" one time and he told me that keith originally sang Anita not Angie, but Mick flat out refused to sing anita. So they decided to go with Angie. Not any specific person. just the sound of it worked perfect. For what it's worth this is what Jimmy Miller told me. I have no reason not to believe him. We met thru my then manager Helen Hotz who hired Jimmy to produce a couple of songs of mine. We talked about a lot of stuff. Not just music. I feel blessed to have been friends with him for a couple of years before he died. Jimmy's wife & son Michael were with him and Jo Jo Lane was also living in town at that time too. So.... that's what Mr Jimmy told me about "Angie" Thanks again for your GREAT work. LOVE IT!!

What a great unique experience you had with Jimmy. Not many can say that. He was so much a catalyst for them. I can not even imagine the going on's and what he went thru. But a true genius. I am sure what he said was true.....and wished I could have mentioned this as a possible scenario. Sounds like you kept your relationship in the right groove , and knew how to approach him. I’ve always thought of this album as such a gem. I remember buying it when it came out and I found myself mesmerized by the intensity as you noted on the latter half of 100 years ago, the drive of Silver Train, and Winter is just one of my favorites. Absolutely beautiful song. Again, thanks for doing these documentaries. I think they’re terrific.

You're absolutely right about listening to these albums (any album really) through headphones. It makes all the difference, you can really get a good volume (not excessively loud) and you hear things that you don't through speakers. I always loved Can You Hear the Music. I love the guitars and horn sounding thing (I think they are horns, maybe guitars) that sort of buzz like bees as the chorus comes in. It's just an interesting direction they took compared to other things they are known for.

RJ, yea, different emotional roller coasters, they needed some romantic ballads so that is why some mellower pieces. I love the mixture of acoustic/mellow/ballad/rockin songs, this is how an album should delivered. maybe add another rocker.

Like you said, this time period was the "Perfect Storm" for the Stones and their music. Amazing how they survived all of the turbulent times. I love how Mick Jagger doesn't take any shit from anyone. Bianca exposed Mick to the finer side of life, and he took this to the next level of class. Thank you again for your work on these docs.

Hey Steve, Part two and you're just heating up here. Fantastic stuff. I didn't know about the cover, your information is very revealing. David Bailey photographing, had no idea. But the cover has never sat well with me, I could only ever think that the chiffon was along the lines of a bag with which to put the goat's head in when making the soup. The glam elements do fit in with the Mr D video though. I just love the 'what to listen for' commentary on each section, you can just tell you've lived this album many times before. I mean, you're pointing out moments where you can hear chewing gum in Keith's mouth!! But nothing seems to have diminished your love for the songs here, it only sounds like the outtakes and new mixes have only deepened your appreciation. So much to love here, Steve. Hello Steve; Once again you have created a comprehensive video detailing The Rolling Stones LP Goats Head Soup. The video takes an in depth look at an underrated, under appreciated record. From the controversial cover to the music recorded, the Stones were left to work under extreme conditions. Giving the record a feeling of disillusionment to some. This in relation to the style of music they had released previously. A definitive change in direction. The record delivers on many fronts. Which never disappoint the listener. There will always be a discussion on how the music was mixed prior to release. Nice explanation for Angie which over the years has taken on many forms & personas. All the tracks displayed their own expressive meaning & feeling. A record to be listened too many times over in order to fully understand the music. Beggars, LIB, Sticky, & Exile (68-72) have always been known as the most prolific period of the band. I’ve long thought though it should carry over to 73’ with GHS rounding out the Big 5. 100 years ago and Can you Hear the Music? being my favorites from this album. Such an underrated Stones album. Maybe my favorite album cover too.

Ah. GHS - My favourite Stones album. It's in my top ten of all time along with other greats like Quadrophenia and For Your Pleasure. I just love this album. I call it their 'groove album'. As you point out. Some of the songs were a bit 'samey' (is there such a word?) But Dancing With Mr D and Can You Hear The Music, Silver Train are all grooves. You could put them on as instrumentals and groove to them. It's not just the album but the times and memories that it stirs up. This and Black And Blue for me are those. It's the time. the moment. For example, I'm now 63. I know a young guy, about 22 who said to me - 'I know everything there is to know about The Doors'. I replied - 'We're you there and around the vibe at the time? Of course he said 'No'. I said 'Then you don't know even half of it.'

I was lucky enough to see them live at Wembley Stadium supported by The J geils Band and Black Uhuru (there through their association with P Tosh and Sly and Robbie when the Stones were in Jamaica. The JG Band were on second and were absolutely terrible. Two songs and off. Great to see these clips by a hardcore Stones-fan. I would not even call these clips; they are actual documentaries. You mentioned the '73 Nicaraguan Benefit show. It's a pity that the boots have (so far) not been all that great. But - I say that the very best shows the Stones may have ever laid down are from the Down Under '73 mini tour. They were red-hot during Taylor's tenure; in '69, in '70 (the forgotten tour), in '72 US and '73 Europe of course. But wedged in there is Australia '73. The show in Perth, and one of the Sydney shows are some of the very best one will ever hear the band. The shows are recorded very well. You can even hear every Jim Price note, LOL. That is rare. Very interesting what you tell about the photo shoot for cover. I always liked the cover a lot. The veiled look is great on Mick. And definitely Hepburn-esque. Is that Bailey standing in front of the framed gallery shots of GHS? I kind of hope you end up doing this type of deep review of all their '68-'78 albums. When you talked about the GHS individual shots, and how they tie in a little with each person, it made me think of the 'Black & Blue' inside shot, with the burning cigarettes. I have always thought that the way each band member traces the lit end in the dark night, sort of corresponds to their personality.

Sounds like you need to make a video and get some turn ons going. you got some deep insights that seem to be valuable. I heard Perth, not Sydney though....I like that the horns are up there and crisp and when all the sounds are simple and separated. Unlike the post 78. just to much going on and very crowded in sound. They are a guitar band and that needs to be front and clear. Yes that is Baily. I do not look deep into covers, and usually like them, except for the lame Dirty Work. I do hope to get to B&B / Some Girls....I just need more literature on it to get details. not a lot out there. I do not have much on it now. Hopefully you saw IORR. cheers steve

This is an incredible series. I'm a Stones fanatic too. One of those people who have numerous configurations of commerce released product . Vinyl, CD, DVD , BluRay, and bosses galore. By 1989 it was all Swingin' Pig leading of course to Vinyl Gang, Dog and Cat , No label ect. I think you get the idea. I like the Stones 1964 to 1981. I'm sure they've done some fine work since then. Hearing Satisfaction on the radio in 1964(?) was heaven. I like that "has anybody seen my baby" song.

I was doing this with my buddies in the 70's / 80's, but since we all split up, it stopped. So this is fun for me, and to geek with others. Growing up the Stones, they were so far away from us as mortals, it is great to share now...and......now realizing how real and human they are...lol, Keith now lives 2 towns away from me. I do not know the answer to your question.....and did not even realize that. good topic! Agree.....with the Dirty Work......and the later albums.......the 2 issues I have with them is lyrically they are sub par to what we knew they could do. This series is another really interesting examination. There's a lot that's novel about Goat's Head in terms of arrangements-multiple parts to songs, time and key changes, wah and other effects. Feels like Jagger is carrying most of the songwriting load here for whatever reason. Taylor gets to stretch out a little bit here, I wonder if that was kinda by design, maybe his restlessness was palpable by this point. Jagger is such an iconic figure and seems to do what he does so effortlessly, it's good to stop as you do and consider some of the words and realize what a brilliant artist, songwriter and unique and emotive vocalist he is. He's also a hard-working S.O.B. Second hardest-workin man in show business after JB? There's one part where you're talking about StarStar and you say: they're playing in the key of F but do it live in E....maybe sped it up in studio (ala Maybeline).... I got to say the technical/musical information in your series really sets your videos apart in an important way. The discussion of the musicality of this amazing band gets lost in most documentaries about the Stones (ie Stones in Exile). The gear talk, the insights into recording techniques used, guitar tunings, who's at the board and when, of course- personnel, are crucial to the overall understanding of the profound musicology of these guys, even if non-musicians might tune out for a minute. Anyways, thanks, and two big thumbs up from NC.

I'm with you about it being a headphone listen, Steve. I'm a bit of headphone junkie anyway, and there's so much detail in this record, I'm always hearing new things, and there'll be even more now that you've pointed out various elements like mic leaks and such. There's a gorgeous deep bass part in Mr D which sounds like it could be Preston on Clavinet. I first heard the album at Uni, my first year, winter '79, and played Winter obsessively as it was mine I my then girlfriend's song - it still has a romance to it, a very optimistic song, I feel. I love Silver Train! Just that 'Oh yeah..' does it, so simple it's genius, and how Mick delivers it with such swagger - his vocal just grows and revs in this. Great work Steve! Cheers, Ian

When you go back and read some of the early reviews of the album they are pretty brutal. What's interesting is that they seem more critical of the Stones life of excess that they had sunk into, but not so much about the music. Of course critics were less than favourable about Abbey Road and Who's Next, two albums that have aged fairly well (tongue-in-cheek). GHS is chock full of brilliance. Excellent point about hearing through headphones. Its an album that demands of the listener to sink right into it. For example, listening to Winter this way never fails to take you away.

Yes, critics...so brutal and caught up on the wrong subject matter, exactly. What / who are exactly making them an expert, just because there were so few magazines and sources then, they felt they were the experts. I tie this topic in to how Keith really liked Andy Johns, because he was just not an engineer but a musician, and actually knew the subject matter and knew how and what was needed to bring their music to another level. One of the reasons why I like Julian Cope as a critic, respectively. I did not realize ARoad / Who;s Next got bad reviews. Oh my, really now! Unless someone has a killer system, headphones are just the way to go, especially initially to train the ear what to hear. oh yes, Winter makes you float!

Good morning Steve. I watched some of this last night and the other half this morning. Man you did a spectacular job with it. I don't think you arr going to find a better overall three part Goats Head Soup breakdown/review of the box set on the Internet. I believe that there is something for everyone on the album. I love how you detailed the tracks. What research. Where they were recorded. When and what they were about. 38:08 Charlie always looked like he did not like to shoot videos to promote the songs. But you could tell that he was all in. He loves playing with the band. The clips. Man oh man. I am always amazed at the clips that you find because there are so many that I have never seen before. They also fit in perfectly to whatever album or time period of the band that you are talking about. I did not know about the censoring of Star Star. Get permission from the man himself Steve McQueen to release the line was pure brilliance. Also very cool of him to let them do so. Who wouldn't want to be named in a Stones song? cheers my RnR bro....I just love it when I can geek out. This is how we approached the Stones songs even years back.....like a college class breakdown of a film, the science of it all. We were / are super geeks with it....just like Beatles fans. Coming from a musical / recording / video background it easy pretty much 2nd nature to do this....but so so so time consuming and focus needed to make it flow correctly. thanks for all. YEs Charlie is just ......WTF do I have to do now? make a video....damn, ok. They ALL knew they had to do things they did not want to do and did it for the Band name and the fans. Love this album. There is just so much depth, craft, and atmosphere to it amongst its warm and murky production. It's perfect for this time of the year of November. It's so 70s and evokes that era so well that even though I didn't exist until '75, I can see and feel the rooms with wood paneling, short-neck beer bottles and smoke-filled air. This bonus release, recent interviews, and the extended sessions proved keith was more involved than what has been believed for decades. For example revealing he intially came up with heartbreaker... Though Dancing with Mr. D is indeed repetitious, that is part of its draw...that infectious groove, marching beat, keith's sinewy guitar riff, and the chanting Dancin' Dancin'. A thought on Micks lyrics and delivery on it...I wonder if Alice Cooper had an influence on his writing here. In regards to Hide Your Love. back in the early to late 80s, a popular radio station out of Detroit used to play that one all the time for some reason. So around here (southern Ontario) it was an Fm staple. I could go through it all these tunes again myself, just out of my own love for it, but you nailed many of the great aspects of it all. Incidentally, I still prefer the original Miller production ovrr the new mix.

Your comment about them laying down when the photos taken is correct. Somewhere I saw other photos from that session and it does show them lying on their backs on whatever the background was. I think the photographer actually stood of them to take the pictures. I'm sure you could find these photos if you googled Goat's head soup photo sessions" but ,I'm not sure if that's how I found it.

Tbh it's when I stopped listening to critics entirely. I used to read a column by Glen O'Brien from Warhol's Interview magazine for tips on new music but apart from the occasional copy of Musician magazine I fucked off the music press entirely. I read somewhere that Keith considered his picture on GHS as looking 'charred'. Strike a match - hold it upright until it flames out with a wisp of black smoke. Hopefully you'll see what I think he was talking about. To be charred and flayed first you have to be torn and frayed. All vital stages in becoming ' elegantly wasted'

Just finished watching the first two parts of the making of Goats Head Soup. What a fascinating story! I always had wondered why the Stones recorded it in Jamaica. I had thought they simply decided it was a cool place to record at the time. Never did I know it was selected by a quasi-process of elimination, since their residence was banned in a number of countries. My two fav songs from this LP are the singles, natch. They are both on a playlist I work out to. The discussion about the LP cover art was most interesting as well. And the final shot from this second part about Mick Jagger Soup: I caught it right at the end, before the video fade-out. Reminds me of one of those prints from the Rorschach test, where it’s possible to interpret more than one thing. 👍

Man, I am glad I found your channel. A great review video, suffused with love for the finest band I have ever heard. For what it's worth, I'm a guitar player and would bet at least one guitar the Angie intro was Keith. We know what kind of acoustic player he is, and the intro is his tough, strong playing style thru and thru. I love GHS, but not so much the production on certain tracks, which I have always thought was overdone, and which rightly or wrongly I attribute to Keith having been MIA for much of the production work. Oh, and the cover sucks - the goat's head in the pot would have been great!

thanks Zile fn.....glad you commented and enjoy. Some folks get my work and what I present, and some are just not in sync. Yes, Keith was MIA, and surprisingly not in Winter. The Business folks surely would not go for the Goat cover....but we would have!! thanks...

@@FlipSideCT I seen on the album's inner sleeve that he is credited with (a) back up vocal song and i heard him on an interview say he played bass and sang on that song...I was like cool! It does sound like him when you go back and listen, he just had a younger and clearer voice than he had on his solo album and even on his live and "a stones throw" album! cigarettes will do that to you : )
