Myself and some members of our RC club helped out the 1st yr aviation students at the local VoTech. They got the Real Flight simulator and installed it on one of their computers. We helped them build LT40 trainers from kits and the students practiced on the sim. At the end of the year we take them out to fly their planes, invariably some planes won't pass our final inspection, but the ones that do we take the students out, trim the planes out and let them fly them, the students using Real Flight all flew successfully, most we never needed to take control to save the plane, a couple of them even landed safely on their very first real flight! It was amazing just how well the students using Real Flight did, they really did learn the basics of RC flight on the sim. A couple years later they got new computers and the computer guys didn't install Real Flight on the new computer, the students were unable to use Real Flight, when it came time to do the flying, they had no idea, they couldn't even make a full circuit without us taking control, none of them were able to fly more than about 30 seconds, as a club we, the trainers were very disappointed in the failure of even one student to fly successfully, Real Flight works if you use it!

Mom got my dad one of the earlier Real Flight systems a few years ago. Watching the video feels like the two of us at the computer with that thing, one hovering and watching while the other plays with it. And we laugh our backsides off at the crashes and such.

You guys could try a sim called "SimplePlanes", where you need to build your own aircraft and (hopefully) fly it. It really teaches a lot about CG, center of lift, AoA, dihedal, etc, alongside creativity skills.

Because it takes real engineers and years and lots and lots of money to develop something that's realistic and runs decently. I've tried basically all the open source sims and they're all very basic and fly nothing like real RC do. Realism is the most important part of simulators. If it's not realistic you might as well fly on GTA V.

I highly reccomend "picasim". desktop version is all free. mobile edition you pay $5 for a few more planes. I have realflight 6 and 2 as well and would say the flying (exept the drone) feels the same.

If you have Taranis or other radio with usb you can use "RC Desk Pilot" or other free sims to have something to start with :)

If you fly Multirotors: *Liftoff* (amazing smooth quad controls and its like $20) If you fly planes/helis: *Aerofly RC 7* (Best graphics out there) Sorry flite test, but that's my personal opinion. I hate paid advertisements. Especially when you can already buy a real transmitter for under 50$ and use it in both sims i mentioned which you can later use for a real rc plane or quad.

I am 13, and when I was 5 I got a liitle e flite rc helicopter and my dad and I spent hours flying that thing in our living room. Then one day it broke so we got another one. Then my dad bought us a hobby zone champ and we flied that a lot too. When I was 9 I got a Cx2 helicopter for Christmas and I loved it. I've been watching your videos and they are inspiring me and I really want to fly a fpv racing quad. I got the indutrix and I've been trying to teach myself to fly in acro mode. Can you please make some more videos about getting into fpv quads. I really want to get in the hobby and I think I should get a simulator. Well GF has given the Okay to get it in April as a Birthday present to myself. Always wanted to try real RC but it has too high of a cost for failure so minimizing it like this is ideal. Can't wait till April.

Nope, the cost of failure was what was putting me off, there was no point in getting a radio at all.

It kinda sounds like you're gun shy of the cost of everything. You can't avoid it. Of course building FT models is the cheapest way to go, 2 to 5 dollars of foam, your time, and the rest is electronics. The radio is one of the biggest expenses, if you want a nice one. Spektrum is good for park flying. FrSky is preferred if you get into quad racing. That is expensive, expect to pay at least $1000 for everything, not including FPV goggles, and many more batteries. You gotta have a radio to use simulators. But Real Flight comes with one or you can use your own. PhoenixRC, you use your own radio. It is preferred by most. It has many more models and sites, and you can load custom ones, like a lot of the FT models, which you can find in the forum. If you don't have the latest and greatest computer with a nice video card, don't even bother with this newest Real Flight X. PhoenixRC runs fine on my 11 year old computer.

My computer will not be crashed into the ground nor anything else in my house (you did say everything) but this hobby is different. Gravity hurts, I wouldn't have any qualms about RC cars/trucks, boats etc... however this hobby is really not that safe for your vehicle at the beginning. When I first looked into this hobby, there was no foam, there was no electric motors, and the cost of fair radio that had enough channels to ensure the radio would have room to work with expanding ran about $500 cdn. It was gas engines, balsa construction and needing a field large enough to handle that type of aircraft making crashing extremely expensive if it was a bad one. So when I was answering your question about not having a radio, when I last looked into it there was no point to have/buy one when I didn't want to invest too much money. Now the hobby is pretty affordable (a lot less then your $1000 projection) as the guys here at Flite Test have said many times over and over, hence why I feel now is a good time to get into it. Looking into it I can get a basic plane and radio for close to $500, hence my interest. I have no issues on equipment to run this at all and all the bells and whistles you mention are not selling points for me, comparing the two this is fine. A few dollars more but it will work.

Yeah, there's cheap radios, good radios, and ridiculous radios. I went with a good 7 channel radio about 4 years ago, the DX7s. I also got PhoenixRC on eBay from China for less than $15. (That's why I asked if you have a radio) Look up "22 in 1 Phoenix 5" I first built myself a quadcopter and I WISH I would have got the bells and whistles, mainly GPS, the Return to Home feature. My quad got far enough away from me I couldn't tell which way it was pointing and every time I thought I was making it come towards me it was going further away. I eventually lost sight of it and I was out about $375 USD. A simple LED headlight and taillight probably could have prevented that loss. Lesson learned. When I mentioned about 1000 USD for a racing quad, I was referring to Mr. Steel's Impulse Alien RR5 setup. Correction, it's more like $800. that includes the FrSky radio and MOST of the FPV gear except Fatshark goggles. But in order to get an hour of flight time in a day, you'll have to buy 15 to 20 batteries at $35 per. So now you're back up to $1300 to $1500. Check out Rotor Riot.

Nope. It's great eye candy, but I turned thumbs down for that reason and the fact that the system requirements are WAAAY more than those for RF 7.5... I have a year old PC with Intel Core i7 and a GTX 745 video card that runs RF 7.5 at max settings flawlessly, and I need to spend another $400 to get a 1070 video card to run it maxed out...

You guys had a lot of fun retracting the B-25 landing gear while it is on the ground. My dad flew B-25 during World War II. This was not common but it did happen that Pilots would retract the gear while the plane was on the ground this prompted them to put a sign near the gear handle that said "do not retract gear while on ground"

There is a weight sensor which senses if the plane is on the ground. This sensor prevents gear retraction while the plane is still on the ground. Failure of this sensor would prevent gear retraction after takeoff.

Flight test may have other opinions...ones that I even respect, but Clearview is basically all you need. Its roughly 40 US dollars and all you need is a USB four to six channel transmitter. I used a fairly powerful entertainment pc hooked up to a 65 inch Panasonic plasma. You can load in user sourced models and you never have to pay extra for ten planes or Anything like that. I have at least 100 hours on it with various models, from helicopters, 3d planes and jets. It does lack some polish, but it will certainly be sufficient in getting you into the hobby. All told it should cost you less than 65 US dollars to get going and you can manually load in additional models at any time. I hope this makes the hobby approachable for you. I have used Phoenix, Realflight and Clearview. I am telling you there is not 100 dollars of value between them especially when they are charging 40 dollars for 10 extra models.. Plus Realflight does have a proprietary controller that you must use, it literally verifies it every time you open the program. Feel free to ask any additional questions....

I would buy Real Flight 7.5, Nice to fly planes beginner through advanced. Start with something Like the BLT and then work your way up. You might do more research on aerofly and phoenix. Realflight X needs a powerful gaming sim to run properly, and does not have many planes, you also cant edit the planes. Realflight 7.5 has something like 200 planes. I use my old laptop from 2012 and still run 40 fps. I have had a lot of fun with Realflight editing and downloading more aircraft. Good luck!

Jonathan Streech any that have a "plug-n-play" feature. Check on your transmitter for a socket or a plug of some kind, they're usually on the back. No promises, I'm telling you from what i remember from years back.

Check your computer that it meets the requirements- IMPORTANT- unless you have a newer gaming computer, this newest version will not work on your computer. This will NOT work with Boot Camp or similar environments.

Hey flite test I've build my first foam airplane and watching your build videos and other beginner videos why is the elevator set up so that when you put you stuck up it goes down and when you out your stick down it goes up It makes more sense for me to have it the other way and can that cause problems for me in the future

i have watch that video but i just doesn't make sense to me why they tell you to set it up so when you push up on the elevator stick it does down and down to go up it seem more logical to set it so up is up and down is down

Tyler The control surfaces work by catching the wind and to every action theres a reaction. When the wind hits the up surface it pushes the tail down, so the plane rotates in the longitudinal axes making the nose go up and the plane climbs. That causes some issues like drag and other stuff, but thats another science by itself. If you want you can confirm the directions by holding the plane vertically and apply some throtlle then move the controls and see where the plane wants tô move to.

thanks you for all your info dias but unfortunately i was more wondering why we set the control up the way we do not really the how it works :P mainly why we set up the elevator to make the plane go up when you push the stick down what makes sense to me is to make the stick reflect the actions of the plane so when you move the elevator stick up the plane goes up and when you move it down the plane goes down. with my first couple flights i have it set up this way and have flow fairly successfully but i don't want to learn the wrong way and have to relearn it latter
