I've been a quad pilot for about 1.5 years and finally ventured into scratch building of the Trainer as my first foray into fixed wing flight. I built my Trainer after watching the excellent video here (with my share of mistakes "WTF? The plans are mirrored???"!!) I completely enjoyed the build experience, and maidened this morning for my first ever fixed wing flight! I WAS AMAZED at how this thing responded to my inexperienced command inputs! Best flight experience ever! About 1-1/2 minutes in air until the gust of wind flipped it over and sent me back to the shop for a couple of hot-glue repairs and a new prop! I CAN'T WAIT for a calm day! THANK YOU FLITE TEST!!!!!!!!! I AM HOOKED!!!! Simple Soarer is next!!

I got started in RC flying about 7 months ago. I've spent quite a bit of cash on various planes. Most fly pretty well. I built a Tiny Trainer last weekend and flew it about 10 times today. I am blown away by how well this inexpensive little plane flies. For pure fun you can't beat it. It does well as a relaxing floaty flyer, but also can do some pretty cool aerobatics. I flew mine with 1000mAh 2S and 850mAh 3S batteries. The fact that it cost so little money takes away a lot of the stress of flying more expensive planes.

I just started this build after building the nutball and FT Flyer. This is a lot more challenging build. I'm building from scratch using tiled plans. I had the fuselage cut out correctly but mis-judged because I did not account for the B fold. So I cut about a cm off; then realized I had it right to begin with. So back to the drawing board. Going to keep at it because this looks like a great plane.

vista7 I finished this build. As mentioned I had a few measurements off on the fueselage, but it flies great as a 3 channel plane. Suggestion on motor combo - I used 2300kv Power Up, 2s 500mah, 10 amp ESC, and a 7035/7inch prop. It's not overly powerful but it is a smooth and very easy going flier. It's easily the best flying plane I have.

Josh, I really like your build videos. You do an excellent job of explaining things and demonstrate a lot of patience. I noticed something in this one that you hadn't explained before and I don't think you got it quite right. A dihedral is defined as an angle formed by two planar (flat) surfaces. A polyhedral is a shape formed by more than two planar (flat) surfaces. I had never heard the expression poly-dihedral. In my experience it is either flat, dihedral, or polyhedral when talking about wings. I might be wrong on that point, but that is the way we say it where I live.

3 years later and its all the brown Waterproof stuff now. looking at it from the white foam board is really weird but i like how a transmitter was provided with the kit (i don't think Customs like this one since i had to pay an extra $40 in duty to ship this one and it was held up for almost 2 weeks but the SE Biplane made it in a Week and wasn't charged duty) and i don't have a RC hobby store locally that deals with Airplanes or Helicopters. i have to go out to the Metro Vancouver area just get a transmitter which is an 30 min to hour drive depending on traffic. +kardRatzinger The target weight is on the plans. 193g without battery. In the glider version with two servos, battery, and receiver, I had to add a lot of weight to the front to get the CG right. I ended up with an AUW of 288g. I suspect the motorized version's AUW would be similar once balanced. I'm considering lengthening the nose a tiny bit to cut the weight down.

I found that the hot glue isn't quite enough to hold the servos into the fuselage, they wiggle themselves free of the glue. You might want to sand the bottom of the servo and the side. Make sure both sides are glued and glued well. Personally, I gave up and used a foam safe CA on the side and bottom of the servos, now both of my servos don't wiggle. You have to be careful tho, otherwise you'll CA glue the moving parts of the servo which would be no bueno.

I'm building one of these now as a dry run glider before ordering the kits to motorize the next one. The stuff they recommend if buying your own is what the Dollar Tree/Dollar stores sell but almost any department store with a crafts section has it. Without measuring it I'd guess its just shy of 1/4" thick and is paper backed on both sides. One thing I found in short order is to make sure the glue you use gives plenty of time work with before it sets up. The stuff I had to start with set up almost instantly and I fudged up the first fuselage section because the glue set too quick and not too sure I can make it work.

@@arsalyusufi5336 Yeah. I didn't catch that your in India when I chimed in with that. If you look through their videos they have some flying wing designs that they made out of cardboard. I have recently built a couple of gliders from their online prints and believe that the more simple ones like the Tiny Trainer could easily be made from cardboard. The Tiny Trainer I built was missing the cutouts for the polyhedral portion of the wing I used (printer ran out of ink) and it flies just fine with a straight wing.

Flitetest crew, some people want to make the best of one piece of foam board and use ever little bit. I think there should be a challenge where the crew members try to make the most efficient yet effective model using one average sheet of foam board. I say that because I recently made a plane with very little scrap all I had was the pieces from making angle cuts for the wings and small corners for squeegees. Thank y'all if you at least thought about it Or even read this.

After a childhood of building and flying RC gliders, I was excited to introduce my 8 year old son to the world of RC. I bought this kit with electronics and tool kit. The build went ok. The link to the power pod build in the description is wrong. It is not the power pod that comes with this kit. I just improvised the pod build before finding the proper video somewhere else on their channel. I ended up gluing the firewall to the wrong side of pod and had to tear it apart to repair. when doing so, two of the wires fell out of the motor. I ordered a new motor and flew the plane once in glider config so we could at least fly that weekend. New motor came and after installing, I went to hook up battery pack and test it. Battery was dead and charger flashes error led's. It will not charge now. Now I have $300 worth of chinese crap on my workbench and a disappointed 8 year old. What I hoped would bring great joy to me and my boy has only brought heartache and frustration. I miss the days when I had my Futaba radio made in Japan. That radio worked flawlessly for 20 years. This Chinese POC lasted one flight.(Spectrum DXe radio, Tattu battery, Electron Li32AC charger, Flite test 1806 motor)

your camera crew has really risen to the challenge. They move from wide to close on long shots with total fluidity....i have been watching since the beginning and i just had to say...well done. Feels as my building has progressed along with my success rate in this hobby, the quality and production of your team has been paralleling my own progress, it's been a nice, albeit remote, partnership. Thanks Flite Test.

What do you do if the glue dries and it's not square? I have it close, but just a little off, since it cooled before I could get out the level

Just made a new aileron wing... when setting the dihedral I made it 12inches up at the top instead of about six which is what the gauge reads. I haven’t flown with this new wing yet but I was interested wether this will change its flight characteristics too much? I would greatly appreciate any replies!!

Can I make this with thick 1-1.5 mm paper, or 2mm hardboard, adjusting the dimensions? Imma try anyway. Can i stick one power pod under each wing?

AK everything yes this hobby is expensive but do not buy a power pack. No t worth it. Buy them separately and get a radiolimk at9 radio for around 100 dollar and then you are up in the air. You need a charger too... Get the imax b6, it is great for beginners

AK everything the transmitter is 100 bucks haha. You need a transmitter to fly and radiolink at9 is a good and cheap one. Radiolink at9=100 bucks. You also need a charger to charge your batteries

What if I want to keep rudder control on my right stick but still have Aileron mixing as an option? Because I feel that the tail should have all of its controls on the same stick, and the throttle and ailerons on the other stick. And since I'm right handed, that means left stick throttle, right stick tail. I know this is mode 4. Basically, I'm saying is there a way to get mode 4 for cheap or on the beginner 6 channel radios? If not, then which radios and or radio systems offer the ability to switch between any mode through software and removing the spring on the vertical part of either stick for correct throttle throw? {{If just removing the spring is how it's done.}}
