Well, I made it, and… It’s freakin’ AWESOME! I cannot believe how good it looks in the blue - and I’m a 59-year old, old Skool British stickler and member of the Spitfire Society!! The semi-elliptical wings are just SO beautiful!! It flies on rails, and feels so clean as it cuts through the air. I’ve only just returned to the hobby after a 45 year hiatus and have a mere three or four hours of r/c stick time, but this ship is so benign. Landing it is easy, just line it up, kill the power and glide a couple of feet above the deck. It just stops in mid-air and floats onto the grass. The nose is soft, so I’m going to add a thin layer of glassfibre to my next one. Also, a thin batten of ply on the spine to beef it up. I crashed mine several times on launch when I maidened it, because it does have a vicious torque roll when you self-launch. (Doesn’t manifest when someone else can give it a decent shove and get the air over the wings early. ) I’m fitting a Zohd ko-pilot which has auto-launch. Now that I know it’s a successful formula, I will definitely be building another, bigger version. Well done, FT, you made my dream come true: I finally got to fly a Spitfire!!👍🍻

John Overstreet has truly revolutionized DTFB plane building! Haven't built a Master Series yet, but this might be my first :) Would love to do the P-38 as well, but feel like this would be a good test first. Some of us never forgot the promise of the V2 ;) Never harbored any hard feelings about it, but this looks to absolutely be worth the wait!!!
@tysonl794 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say this is revolutionary. I've looked at a few of these plans. It looks like he's just tracing old paper models into inkscape or illustrator an up-scaling them. Some of us have been doing this for years.
@xs-1b4154 жыл бұрын
The P-38 would be a tough Master Series to start with. Looking at the plans for this, it looks very similar to the Corsair - which was a challenging, but approachable build. I would highly recommend giving one a shot, my Corsair especially flies great and I think it has a lot to do with the smooth airfoil that is generated by molding the foam. One word of caution, they need nose weight - and lots of it. I did not want to invest in 3,000 mAh batteries, so I used a 3536 brushless motor and it balances great with a with my hoard of 2,200 mAh 4S. Plus, you have more power than you will ever need.
@crashrr29933 жыл бұрын
If you make it, you will not be disappointed. Please read my earlier comment. This ship flies and looks far beyond my expectations. I can’t recommend it enough.

Those master series planes are cool n' stuff, but nerdnic made a better (easier to build and more scale) Spitfire. Not as much effort to make one, and after making one I can assure anyone willing to make it that it's worth it. Not to diminish John's work :) Btw you guys should check how canopies are made for paper models. For example the new MS Mustang looks dope, but its canopy looks terrible. Emil Zarkov is very good paper models designer from Bulgaria, you should check out Mustang designed by him. There are also many others. Remember - you don't have to do everything on your own, some things don't have to be "RePioneered", and often despite hard work it turns out that someone made something better than you
@Dylz524 жыл бұрын
I'm not a really a fan of the leading edge of the wings with the Master Series planes. The double layer of foam looks messy and makes it obvious that it's a foam-board plane. I like the older style where the foam is folded over so you end up with a nice sharp and neat leading edge and the foam is hidden

How come you don't add take off/landing gears to the planes is it that difficult?
@linecraftman39074 жыл бұрын
If you add landing gear that doesn't retract on a warbird, not only it produces a lot of drag, it quite honestly looks shit. If you put retractable landing gear it'll look better for sure but there it is much more difficult to incorporate it inside a wing without compromising the rigidity. They also really like to fail in flight. IMO not worth the hassle on planes that can be hand launched
