I turned 80 on Saturday and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up...lol. I have very many interests and have often been told to choose one and settle down. I tried to but it never worked. I felt uneasy about this until I read a book by Barbara Sher called "Refuse to Choose". At least I think that is what it was called. In it, she says there are two types of people in the world: Divers and Scanners. The Diver spends most of their life on mainly one job or interest and really dives deep into the topic. The scanner, on the other hand, spends their time on a lot of subjects throughout their lives. They learn a lot on one interest, then move on to the next interest and again learn all they can. I find that I do this in a circular motion often returning to learn more about an interest that I had previously visited. Your video has shown me that there are many people in the same boat,, so thank you for that.

But reading your story, it seems I've got a few more years to think about it 🙂 Thanks for sharing yourstory!

LoL me too not knowing what to do when I grow up. My daughter asked me yesterday why at 81 I still keep doing new projects, why couldn’t I just sit back, relax and enjoy myself. What she doesn’t realise is that apart from the fact I AM enjoying myself, I have to find my new career! People are always saying that they cannot believe my age and energy and I believe it’s because my curiosity about everything drives me on and that’s just the way I like it. It’s a big, big world and I want to at least scratch the surface before I depart. I’ll be reading the book by the way.

@@dianebunce6600 Sadly, a lot of people subscribe to the notion of older people sitting around and waiting to die. Maybe they're just projecting what they would want when they feel overwhelmed by their own lives. While it is true that some dream of lazing around on a beach somewhere, others are kept alive by the pursuit of creative ideas. We can't wait to see what we can come up with next. I've read that book too, by the way, and I love it. Keep on making stuff and don't let anyone get in your way!

I am a chemist. I do all right in my job. BUT my hobbies are for fun. I am creative promiscuous, but I hobby is not to achieve perfection, is to have fun. Of course I do get sad sometimes with my bad arts, but Is something that I need to learn: have patience, and keep going. I do procrastinate when I think is getting bad. A lot of times I had fun fishing to ruin it. Because, is an already lost drawing or painting, and I care when I start, accept that won’t be good thorough the process, and experiment when I gave up. One hobby helps with another. Photography helps with composition, drawing helps with color.. and so on. I have 20 years to learn (my retirement plan is to be the old lady of cats painting in the middle of nowhere) 😅 have fun ❤

I used to get frustrated at myself for having too many interests, that it kept me from becoming proficient in any one thing. And then I came to the realization that it's a gift. Because all of those passions are what makes me... Me! I love drawing, painting, videomaking, journaling, playing music, writing music, learning about history, calligraphy, medieval manuscripts, I've studied multiple languages and am obsessed with acquiring more, crochet, embroidery, nature, birding, reading, writing, gaming, baking, cooking, animation, traveling, and so many more things, many that I haven't even discovered yet. I love so many things and I LOVE that I love so many things. It makes it impossible to be bored and more importantly it makes me have an appreciation and gratitude for everything. For me, this is what life is all about. I don't need to be a master of any one thing. The most important thing is that they are all fulfilling to me and are my reason for living. ❤

Being a generalist or jack of all trades is not a bad thing at all! It's just society seems to put a lot of focus on people who are masters of this or that, and we tend to forget that most of us won't reach that and honestly don't even want to reach that. It must be so boring to just focus on one thing to become a world champion of one thing or another. I say: celebrate us jacks of all trades!

Here's an idea. My way of dealing with multiple interests. You have to try and find a link between all the things you like to do and mourn the ones you can't do. For example, I like drawing, painting, lego, ceramics, and so on. I came up with the idea of making stop-motion films for my children. Painting on canvas for the backgrounds (a beach, a seascape, etc), ceramics for the set pieces (tree, tower, etc), legos for the little character animations, drawing for the storyboard (study drawing animation)... Starting with an idea for a short film, I was able to focus all my energy on doing lots of things that I enjoy. Thank you for your video :)

I have taken up a few that I rotate through regularly, zentangle ish, I don't follow all their rules, card making , art Journaling using collage and mixed media and an illustrated journal because you taught me how to draw in a way that makes me feel accomplished. Some I've tried and tossed to the side, they just looked like my thing but really didn't work for me. I also have myself on a no buy because I just purged hundreds of dollars of art supplies to others that I hope will use them. I always have something with me so I can draw and doodle anywhere. I will never be shown in the MOMA, but who cares, I'm playing to make up lost time and it's so fun.

I love it, now I have a name for it! I am also a proud life-long learner. I couldn’t care less if I never master anything. The joy is in the journey. But in reality, by default of have consistent focus over time, I have become accomplished at many things over my 62 years. I have had the same base interests since a child and expanded within those. There’s a lot of connectivity among my interests. I love music and have focused on the Celtic genre. I have become skilled at fingerstyle guitar and also play Celtic flute, whistle and am now enjoying learning fiddle. I’m a voracious reader and have a reputation of knowing about a lot of things, while in fact I know a little about a lot of things and a lot about a few topics. I love nature, and over many years have learned plants, become an decent birder, am a Gardner, landscaped my yard, love hiking. I could go on. If it’s about being the best, you’ll get frozen by perfectionist thoughts. Make it about the joy of learning.

You just described me, perfectly ... you mean I'm not alone? "you will seem like an expert to them" - one of my interests (I call them fascinations) is Medieval music - it's related to my attempt to write a medieval-science fiction Fantasy. The novel has elements of both genres. Recently a friend commented on how much I knew about Medieval history and culture... I nearly said "I know so very little!" I didn't say it. It would have taken the conversation in totally different direction and I wanted her to know enough to understand what the music (I describe) my novel sounds like! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! My novel is the narrative ... I started it decades ago, I find it's the framework of a great many of my interests. My list.. Reading, writing... Crochet, knitting, tatted lace making, sewing, beading, cooking, gardening, herbalism (interested in health, especially, now that i am older), weaving, history, Philosophy (medieval and classical) Shakespeare, Opera, Superman and Batman movies. Gnostic Christianity. The sciences (in the general sense..) astronomy (very!) raising chickens and cats. I'd like to learn enough Linux to keep this computer up to date.. I've tried languages but I don't seem to have an aptitude for them? I'd love to learn to draw better.

Years ago there was a trend in business to use strengths based supervision to help employees find and reach their true potential. The first step was a strengths analysis and during that process, I realized that my tendency to be a generalist and, as you said, “flit” from one thing to another could be a strength and not a weakness. I built on that and other strengths and retired from my last position as an executive director of a research center. Knowing and tapping into my strengths actually allowed me to overcome weaknesses yet we constantly tend to focus on our weaknesses and oftentimes don’t even realize where our strengths lay. Since my retirement, I’ve been flitting around quite a bit while knowing that I want to engage in my artistic interests which have been ignored for many years. I’ve been beating myself up about flitting from one medium to another without making “progress” and I had completely forgotten about the whole strengths based approach which I have never applied outside the realm of work! Thanks very much for reminding me, Danny!

It does get expensive when wanting to make everything and it takes up a lot of space. As a HSP however I need something to stop all the thoughts in my brain. Now, I have discovered aquarell/gouache painting and drawing. There is so much to learn and I forget everything when painting. I have tried to explain to other people that it is not my goal to be a famous painter which not many people seem to understand. It is the learning process that I like. Get bored when I can do what I wanted to learn and have to find something else to practise. So good to hear that I am no the only one who wants to try a lot of different things. Thank you so much.

I needed to hear this TODAY!!! lol. Age 48 and I’ve always been annoyed at myself for constantly flipping….so thank you for confirming my existence, thank you! Life changed. Slán from Ireland 🇮🇪✨✌️

Oh my goodness I've found my people! I'm learning that being like this means I'm enjoying the process and the core hobby I have is learning and mastering skills. And as you say, this engages me and all the skills end up linking together. Thanks for sharing your experience of this!

It’s where I find myself at the moment. I haven’t figured out how to schedule my day or week evenly so that I can feel accomplished.

This is exactly me! I don’t worry so much about not mastering a certain craft or project. My problem is buying all the supplies for the new exciting hobby and then losing interest. Being left with all of these expensive supplies.

I enjoy sampling. I go a little deeper and learn more if it's interesting. Thank you for your thoughts.

This resonates with me. Realizing I am a generalist with a lot of creative interests and that’s ok has been a slow journey. Thank you for the video!

Este video me ayudó muchísimo! A verme el retrato completo de mí misma😅. A intentar comprender el motivo por el cual uno quiere ser y estar en todo, creerse capaz de realizar cualquier actividad... Y ninguna al mismo tiempo. Gracias ☺️

thank you for this sir! this is me 100% and i was always made to feel bad for never “finishing” anything that i try out so i was given less opportunities to learn new things that required money as a kid. this video has given me a lot to think about and a new appreciation for myself being a forever student, even if i never master anything. i have freedom now as an adult who makes a living, and i find that the pursuit itself of learning anything brings me joy. ❤

This is wonderful. I am constantly jumping between things. I get super interested in something, but before I've really got anywhere with it, I see something else shiny and jump across to that. I'm terrible at finishing anything. I need to set shorter term, more achievable targets. I also need to get a lot better at time management. It always seems to take way longer than is reasonable to achieve anything. But this video has at least made it clear that it's not just me, and that maybe it's not such a failing, Thank you!

Everyone tells artists, “you need to pick a niche and stay with it to be successful.” I imagined this to sound like a sad slow death. The idea of being the lady who paints dogs over and over and over… so I dabbled on the side, didn’t call myself an artist and waited tables for 33 years. I became an art teacher and book maker quite by mistake, and discovered it works so well for me, because you never write the same book twice, need to teach people new things, so it never gets boring. I have been hitting the ceiling with this as well, so I’m recreating the entire platform and way that I’m teaching. I have said for many years, I’m proficient in most things, the master of none, so crazy you said that. This is the message I needed today. It’s ok, I’m “quitting” teaching in 3 of the 4 programs I work with, one being my own private art school. Doors are closing. I’m grieving, but I will create the new thing I’ve been dreaming about for years, I’ll probably get barely proficient at it, then drop it and go do something else completely unexpected. Thank you for helping me be ok with who I am, the most promiscuous creative. ❤️

a much needed video. Thank you for making me see the bright side of being a dabbler, because I am that and I worry a lot about lacking focus and mastering one skill. Almost feeling guilty for my variety of creative projects that I enjoy so much. I feel better because of your insight. Thanks.🙏 ❤❤❤

Synchronicity at work. While spending last few days Organizing an overwhelming amount of art supplies covering everything wondering why ??? And your video popped up. 🙏🙌🤣🥰 I feel so much better at who I am and why am I all over the creative spectrum.

Love this! Was nodding vehemently throught the introduction. Yup, that's me. Even though I have kept at some hobbies for a number of years, I usually lose interest at some point, though I may pick it up again later. You're right, I was beating myself up a bit, but at the same time it's just fun to try out new things, and you can definitly talk about a lot of things with people!

Timely observations. I am in the group to which you refer. Thanks. I cannot post a link here, but if you search "how many hobbies can you have" a relevant cartoon might popup.

I too have been feeling bad about being creatively promiscuous. It helps to know I'm not alone in this. I like to think of it as my inner child who just likes to make things. ❤❤❤

Agree 100%. Its always been my self battle to let go, to free myself to experience failures without excessive self judgment . Thanks to Danny, Im healing my artist self and finding joy, less perfectionism , and enjoying the uglies teach me , and unexpected beauties astound me. God bless you Danny for helping me give myself permission to let my self imprisoned artist soul go free!

My list includes ceramic clay Handbuilding, acrylic painting, zentangling, polymerclay, mandala drawing, sketching, watercolor painting and most recently gouache. I dabble in each, some more than others. I love learning new crafts but my propensity to add more is getting expensive! Plus my spaces are filling up!! Time to move 😊

Danny, you wrote this specifically for ME. Right? You must be the little mouse that scampers into the corners while watching me jump from subject to subject, from project to more projects while finishing none. Oh, but the plans I have are grand and the skills are constantly being honed. Perhaps I will go to my grave with so many ideas and so much knowledge that there will be little room on my grave stone to announce the vast array of my autodidactic pleasures. Thank you so much for recognizing me for who I am.
