My father got to know actor Sidney Blackmer, who played Roman. Blackmer was from my dad’s hometown (Salisbury, NC). He kept a home there and visited from time to time. My dad thought the world of him even though he only knew him briefly. Just a wonderful old school actor. “Rosemary’s Baby” is what he’s remembered for and it came for him late in life. Sidney passed away in 1973. When dad and I were in Spencer a few years ago we visited Blackmer’s old home, long abandoned and boarded up. It was sad but also kind of spooky. The old mansion was going to be torn down in a few months to make room for a bank.

I think the ending of the movie is supposed to make us feel frustrated, because they get away with what they've done. It tells us that not always 'good' prevails over 'bad' And that in itself is a very scary and unsettling thought. Awesome reaction again 😃

In the book "Rosemary's Baby" the baby looked like a normal, reddish-blond baby but he had these cat-like yellow eyes. He also had small claws, a tail, and buds on his head where the horns are.

This film, and book, is a brilliant thinly veiled allegory for women's rights, do what you're told, women shouldnt read books, etc. 'Guy' is a non-indentity face for the patriarchal monarchy of society. Great movie.

Roman apparently told Terry about the plan to impregnate her with Satan's spawn, which is why she was given the tannis-filled necklace. Some viewers conclude that, after she learned about her fate, Terry committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of the Bram. Other viewers conclude that Terry was compelled to jump by the witches, citing Rosemary's "dream" the night before, in which Minnie's voice was heard through the wall, telling Roman, "If you'd listened to me, we wouldn't have had to do this!.. I told you not to tell her in advance... I told you she wouldn't be open-minded!" Minnie and Roman make sure they're alibied, i.e. outside returning home when the body is found. (Otherwise they would have been inside when it occurred -- as the elderly couple seem to have nothing to do outside the Bramford -- and been subjected to scrutiny from the police.) This is the fateful first time the Woodhouses meet the Castevets in person, although they've already heard Minnie caterwauling through the thin walls.

I remember seeing this when it came on tv in the early 70’s. The scene “he has his father’s eyes” scarred my childhood brain & I think I closed my eyes the rest of it. I was around 6yo. If it came on tv the kids got to watch it. I saw quite a few scary movies in early childhood 😮

The building was the Dakota where John Lennon was shot in 1980 and where Yoko Ono still lives. In fact, the very last shot of the movie shows the entrance to the courtyard where he was killed. Tragedy came sooner than that, though; right after this movie was the heartbreaking murder of Sharon Tate, her unborn son and her friends. That aside: GREAT REACTION!!!! I hope you eventually hit Polanski's other great American masterpiece, "Chinatown" (1974), with Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. Cassavettes is pretty hateful in this movie, right?!! Ha! He's fantastic in this movie. Ruth Gordon, Mia....everyone. Great movie.

I read the book as a teenager and from what I can remember Guy had no malicious intentions whatsoever before meeting the Castevets but the promise of money and fame turned him. Guys can I recommend The Stepford Wives (1975) too by the same author Ira Levin? Fantastic movie!

This is also one of my ten favourite movies of all time. Ruth Gordon sets all my alarms off, what a fine actor! Your "suffering" at the movie's end was intentional. Polanski didn't want the audience to simply walk away. You'll be thinking about this for a long time.

Charles Grodin (from "The Heartbreak Kid") played Dr. Hill. Maybe you could watch "The Stepford Wives" also written by Ira Levine.

This is actually my favorite movie of all time (tied with Psycho). The true horror of the movie IS the ending, the fact that nobody paid for it and Rosemary was sucked into caring for her devil baby. That's the point. Ira Levin, who wrote the book Rosemary's Baby, wrote a sequel like 30 years later called "Son of Rosemary" and this book/movie is a cakewalk by comparison. It is AWFUL. I pretend it doesn't exist.

Everything written by Ira Levin is creepy like this. The decision to NOT show the baby was calculated. According to Levin, once you SHOW a monster, once you've given it a face, you've taken away all its mystery. Other great movies by Ira Levin: the original Stepford Wives; Sliver (with Sharon Stone).

One of the best book to movie screenplay adaptations. The movie ends like the book except the book lets you read Rosemary's thoughts of getting the baby away from the coven and taking it to religious clergy (probably Catholic since that was her upbringing.) The movie ends with the biggest horror punch. My husband Ron & I, when faced with an odd or troublesome situation often quote our favorite line from the book/movie, " This is no dream; this is really happening! " along with that creepy lah-lah-lah-lahlah lullaby.

Dr. Hill was played by a young Charles Grodin. Fur Elise by Beethoven was the song played on the piano that we hear repeatedly in Rosemary's apartment building, why, I don't know. It does sound rather ominous.

I think Guy outsmarted himself in this movie. He probably strung Roman along for a private laugh, never once believing that it was for real. And when the other actor went blind, he went Holy Shit! This is for real. Roman had probably warned him that he and Rosemary would both jump out the window like Terri if he should try to back out. Also, imagine the power Rosemary would get as Queen Mother of Hell On Earth! She could get revenge on anyone. Not even Roman Castavet would be as powsrful or important.

You both are just stellar in your thinking and reactions. Always nice to see a sane reactionary critique...the mother/son dynamic has a very organic flow. This film is one of my classic favorites...Farrow and Cassevettes were just in their pre stardom. Mia's frail frame was just perfect for the damsel in distress...the audience was always in her corner. Love the vague ending...leaving the premise open for future films. Thanks for your reactions!!

Great horror movie. The remake several years ago was very bloody. Great direction by Polanski when Rosemary hears the lady talking behind the slightly opened door...makes the viewer lean over to try to see who it is...awesome shot.

It’s a terrific film. Beautifully constructed with mounting tension to a conclusion you know is just going to be horrible. The exterior of The Dakota apartment building in Manhattan is used (interiors are a set). It’s one of the top five exclusive buildings in Manhattan and the board I’m sure is notoriously picky. Of course they pretend it’s a rental here. The idea that a struggling actor with a single income could afford such an apartment defies credulity. Similar to the idea of the “Friends” apartment. But my God does it make an atmospherically creepy setting to this story. Polanski at the top of his game. And the more I’ve seen it I think Mia deserved a nomination for her acting.

You can watch part 2 Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby. It's not the greatest sequel, but at least it lets you know what happened to her and the baby. Mind you, they didn't get Mia to portrait Rosemary again. Instead they got actress Patty Duke. Ruth Gordon is re-casted as Minnie. Thanx and take care..xx
