Grave Reacts: Rosemary's Baby (1968) First Time Watch!

It’s fun to go back and rewatch it for little details. Looks that are exchanged. I wonder when exactly her husband made a pact with the coven. Was it before they ever moved into the apartment building? If you watch the scene carefully where they first go to have dinner with Roman and Minnie, there is a brief shot of Roman and Guy talking privately while smoking after dinner. Rosemary comes in from the kitchen and walks in on them. Look carefully at Guy’s face. He is not saying anything to Roman. He’s just staring at him with this shocked expression. Little details like that are peppered throughout the whole movie. Kinda like how Hereditary made you rethink the whole movie from the beginning once you know the end. Very creepy to think about.

The night he and Rosemary went to the Castavet's for dinner which is something Guy didn't want to do but he went back the next night alone while Minnie and Laura Louise visited Rosemary is when he agreed to make a pact with the coven.

half and half, mom can give it a heart. the kid is half human. True to the novel. Excellent Direction, Acting and Location filming. A classy production. Mia should have taken best Actress.

My two biggest take aways from this movie are: 1- Paranoia can save your life 2- Never eat unsolicited desserts

This movie was filmed at The Dakota. Luxury apartments, in a building that was built in the late 1800s. John Lennon and Yoko bought a unit there and lived there for many years. It's on Central Park West.

My dad go to know actor Sidney Blackmer who played Roman. He thought the world of him. Just a classic old school actor. This film is what he’s most remembered for. Sidney passed away in 1973.

Guy's casually just saying that Rosemary wasn't "really hurt after all" makes my blood boil. As if he hadn't offered her up to be literally r@ped by actual Satan, as if she hadn't been in physical pain for months, hasn't lost her close friend, hasn't been tortured and gaslit for almost a year. Guy is the worst. And it's strongly implied that Rosemary loves the baby. She wanted a baby so badly, and she loved that baby completely before she had it, so now he's here I think she will still want to take care of him. The little smile at the end... She's going to take care of him. Let's hope she can get the baby away from the coven and raise him normally somewhere in the middle of nowhere and teach him to be nice, like the antichrist in Good Omens, or the fanfic/tumblr posts about the family adopting and raising the antichrist to be a nice human and stopping the apocalypse every generation.

Brilliant film. One of many by Polanski. Another great one by him is "The Tenant". A very strange, creepy and absurd psychological horror. For a more Horror comedy vibe, go for for "The Fearless Vampire Killers. Beautifully shot and a haunting soundtrack. And as I have said many times, please react to "Shallow Grave"

The new season of American Horror Story makes use of many plot points from this movie. Nothing beats this unsettling classic. You two are so cute to watch, my favourite reaction couple.

The huge apartment building that Rosemary and Guy lived in is actually the famous “Dakota” apartment building in Manhattan, on West 72nd Street, right across the street from Central Park and the famous John Lennon memorial Strawberry Fields. The interior of the building was shot at Paramount Studios in L.A. because the Dakota wouldn’t allow movie cameras inside, the Dakota is extremely elegant inside, unlike the Rosemary and Guys place where the hallways needed work. The Dakota has been home to the rich and famous in NYC since the late 1800’s, and John Lennon and his wife lived there from 1973 until 1980. On December 8, 1980 John was shot to death outside the Dakota in the large entranceway. In the movie where Terri fell from a window onto the sidewalk is the area out front where John was approached by a deranged fan who shot him in the back 5 times as he tried to run inside.

A few trivia notes on uncredited casting in the film: when Rosemary calls Donald Baumgarner, the blinded actor, the silky smooth voice on the line is the late great Tony Curtis. In the scene where Rosemary calls Dr.Hill in desperation from a public phone booth the vaguely sinister cigar chomping man waiting outside is a producer cameo by William Castle, famous as the King of 50s gimmick B horror like The Tingler, House On Haunted Hill, 13 Ghosts and Mr. Sardonicus. Castle's reputation as a schlockmeister was so inhibiting the studio agreed to back the film only on the precondition Castle NOT direct it. Thus Roman Polanski's Hollywood career soared. Rosemary would be the most prestigious film Castle would ever be associated with by far.

Fun review! For the scene where Mia Farrow walks into oncoming traffic, she really did walk into oncoming traffic, with Roman Polanski following her with a handheld camera. He told her no one would hit her because she looked pregnant.

My mother saw this movie when it came out. At the time, she was recently married and trying to get pregnant. She remembers it being very frightening. Good observations on your part of how society's treatment of women then (and now) adds to the horror. The director of this film was Roman Polanski, whose (9 months pregnant) wife Sharon Tate was one of the victims of the Manson cult just a few months after this movie premiered. Great reaction, looking forward to more.

You Tube has the full movie for free. It came out in 1976, BUT it was a made for TV movie, so right there you know that’s a bad sign. The only one who returned from the 1968 movie was Ruth Gordon (Minnie), but she doesn’t get much screen time. The character of Damien was supposed to have been born in 1966, which would make him 10 in this TV movie, but he’s now a man who looks to be over 30 (and REALLY fried ) and sings in a rock band. The plot is awful, and some really great actors surely regretted signing on to do this movie. It’s oddly enough one of those movies that’s so bad that it’s great: you need to see it just to have your mind blown over how awful it is. Roman Polanski had nothing to do with this movie, and if he saw it he would’ve probably had a stroke.

Thank you. "Rosemary's Baby" (1968) and "The Exorcist" (1973) are often lumped together as originators of modern demonic horror movies. "Rosemary's Baby" (1968) was indeed a horror film, as was Polanski's earlier "Repulsion" (1965), but both were largely eclipsed by the later "The Exorcist", a shock movie relying on the 'horror' of a little girl's vulgarity of speech and action, along with medieval ideas of religion. "Rosemary's Baby" isn't a gory slasher, but where "The Exorcist" relied at the time on shock and revulsion, and so fails now, Baby was built on mood and atmosphere as much as "Pearl" (2022). Indeed its themes of disempowerment and isolation are still relevant today, at least that is my opinion and what do I know. Please forgive me for disagreeing with you that there were no "good" doctors who could be trusted. As with the discussion around institutional racism and the defunding of the police today, there was, and still is, a culture of misogyny in the medical professions, one that women doctors were not exempt from. Despite this there were and are good doctors, they were just vastly in the minority. Horrific Trivia: Marital Rape, the rape of one partner by another, was not at the time of the filming of this movie considered a crime, it being assumed that both partners gave blanket consent to any and all legal sexual activity as part of the marriage ceremony. It was not until the mid seventies that laws started to be changed and the first trial for spousal rape occurred in 1978. However it was not until 1993 that all fifty States criminalised Marital Rape, and even today there are states where the treatment of Marital Rape is not the same as rape committed outside of marriage. Around the world there are still forty-nine countries where Marital Rape is legal, and another seven where its legality is unclear. The two largest, by population, offenders are China and India, though India "may" be in the process of criminalising Marital Rape.
