If the joists vary in size, then this jig is useless for the application. A different jig suitable for the joist different from the others should be made to make the work easier. I only have to use one size of joist so this jig is perfect for lining up the joist hangers. It's just made from scrap pieces of wood and four screws so the trouble of making one can save you more time in the alignment of the hangers.

I just don't think all joists are the same. 2x8 can vary up to a 1/4 I've seen.

@@1ckTr well, I agree with you. There will always be flaws in the sizing. You just have make the necessary adjustments I guess as you install them to make sure the wood are flushed on top. It will be a lot work if you will check each piece if they are smaller by 1/4" or so. You can also install the hanger and joists at the same. If by any chance, the worse that can happen is that the joist is not flushed on top and is protruding. An electric planer should do the trick. 😊
