Do you make a pilot hole on the canvas? Won’t the canvas frame crack if you don’t? If you even wanted to reuse the canvas or change the frame, you would be left with a damaged canvas ?

I just clamped mine together following your plans. I’m tempted to throw a nail in each corner for stability. Could always putty small hole. What are your thoughts?

You can do that if you want to. Put the nail in the corner where no one would see it, the top and the bottom of the frame.
