Floodwater Barbel Fishing : River Severn Barbel
I join barbel ace Lewis Baldwin on the middle reaches of the river Severn near Bridgnorth for a chat about barbel fishing tactics, especially floodwater fishing.
We talk about the development of Lewis' barbel fishing, from his early days on the river Severn, to specimen fishing on the Warwickshire Avon, Dove and Trent. How baits and tactics have changed on these rivers and the changing face of barbel fishing.
We then go on to have a look at how to approach a flooded river. Covering swim choice, where to fish, rigs and baits. Along the way Lewis catches a few fish too.
We hope you enjoy this film and let me know in the comments if there are any other topics you would like me to cover.
01:28 - How Lewis got into barbel fishing.
04:00 - Barbel fishing on the Warwickshire Avon
17:57 - Floodwater barbel fishing on the river Severn
19:47 - Floodwater location
22:10 - Tackle Choice and staying mobile
43:40 - Baits

Thanks Gary. We often forget the simple baits, such as worms, but they will catch an awful lot of fish!

Brill video Paul. I fish the Severn at Ironbridge. Love it there. We have a good population of Barbel, from doubles to babies. Can't beat it.

Really informative chat, that's helped me think a little differently about the reasons on why populations of Barbel have declined on many of our rivers. And the natural balance idea of the rivers only supporting what they can hold sounds quite plausible. But I do think over use of pellets can't be good, and has maybe aldo had an effect on the population. Paul. Maybe do a bankside feeder fishing session for silvers & chub to show others anglers there's more to fishing than boilies and pellets? 👍

There is a saying that,If your concentration is getting bad, take up top water or bass fishing. It will really improve your ability to focus. Thanks for sharing this video...

Really like the concept. Great to see something a little different to the norm. You could have struck upon something with the "bankside chat" idea. Always nice to get an insight into people and places rather than out and out marketing all the time.

@@drpaulgarner nice have a look at Woodside fishery, in Kidderminster I believe its not far from you and the island pool has perch to over 5lb and they allow dropshotting, so would imagine they would allow single hook lure like jigging etc too. Unfortunately I don't do Facebook, but I know thom hunt as I'm subscribed to his you tube channel, he's an excellent lure angler.

That got me thinking about carrying some big worms in high water conditions along with smelly boilies. Something as basic and overlooked like that could make a difference.

nice to hear the conversation about population dynamics. Whilst at Aberdeen University I came across catch data for I think it was the Dee. Salmon beats kept records of all captures dating back to the 18th century and what struck me was the boom and bust nature of captures - there would be a decade of high numbers of salmon caught then a drop lasting again a decade - and this wasn't down to human pollution or overfishing at sea. All species of fish see natural fluctuations in populations. On the issue of baits in flood - try a large lob worm and luncheon meat together! Ive had a great fishy response to that

Thanks Roger. I like the bait idea. Will give that a try. Thanks!

@@drpaulgarner Yes Paul - size 6/4 hook through the meat, the largest lobworm you can get your hands on hooked once so it's sitting on the bend then push the hook back up into the meat. You have a large lob held nicely against meat. Alternatively, the worm onto a hair, followed by the meat. After a decade of boilies and pellets, I've gone back to the old ways and have to say they just can't resist it!

Does anyone know what the rods and reels are that Lewis is using in this film please. I have some retirement money to spend and quite like the style of fishing shown. Thanks.
