I watched the livestream of this, and I think you did a great job at improvising! Something I considered was using an a-frame ladder, fiberglass is fine, and inexpensive, and you can rig up some high-load string, or rope, through the top tray where the holes on top of the ladder are, and use that as a hoist if you don't have any pulleys. I ended up using a floor joist above my brew space to do it, and it works fantastic to suspend the grain bag and let it drain into a wort bucket while I wait for the boil. Then, you just spin it around slowly and let the bag naturally compress itself to get even more wort if you need it! Anyways, cheers and great job!

Love the vid, Sarah! I suspect your refractometer is off calibration due to the move. 11 lbs of malt at 34 ppg in 6 gallons of water at 80% efficiency works out to an OG expected of 1.062... congrats on the new home! Love that pool.

Yeah agreeing. Ordering a new one!

When you take the the sample, turn the pipette upside down and put the bulb in a little cup of water to take the temp down before streaking the wort on your refractometer. My readings were always way high before adding that step.

For squeezing the liquid out of the BIAB I got The Sentinel Boil Over Minder , which is essentially a kettle size colander, and put that over the kettle after pulling the grains and push down with the lid of the pot to get out the liquid. I realize that your grain is most like a lot heavier then what I do but it work pretty well for me.

If you can find a pump, pump pool water into the chiller and recirc back into the pool! I wish I could do this but the pool and my workshop are at opposite ends of the house...
@FloraBrewing3 жыл бұрын
Oh I have pumps coming out my ears! Such a good idea! Do you think the chlorine will screw with the pump or copper though?
@glleon805173 жыл бұрын
@@FloraBrewing no, chlorine will not hurt hoses or pumps. Since you are getting your water tested you can find out how hard your water is. Hard water will leave scales of calcium behind. But you can use a calcium blocker filter that is designed for RVs to fix that.

I designated a smaller brew pail 1.5 gallon took a knife speared the bottom 7 - 8 times turn upside down in my 5 gallon brew pail so does`nt float use rubber gloves twist and press the brew bag on bottom till finished so much easier even sparge it into the brew pail then make dog food from the grains neighbors dogs love it , I add a ground up cooked wiener with it -- I use a plastic 5 gallon but I pour the rest of my brew in for fermentation , I like your new system .

To pull my bag out after the mash i put a 6 foot A frame ladder over the kettle and use a locking pulley and small pipe through the eye of the pulley. It works out great 👍

Loved watching this vid. I've been a home (hobby) brewing for about 8 years. Has been the school of hard knocks. I think my methods are pretty basic (AKA: cheap). IN that time I've had about every complication and set back. Grain stuck, low yields, high SpGs. Early on I was often frustrated, but having experienced all those complications, it's easier to adapt on the fly when faced with an obstacle. You definitely faced any adversity with patience and humor, even when faced with conflicting data. I've watched a bunch of your vids ( long time listener, first time caller) and you always seem to be in control even as you try different, often more modern technologies. Kind of got the feeling that things were discombobulated due to your recent move and not having all of your customary tools immediately at hand. I love the idea of utilizing the wort chiller water for a higher purpose. Well, you got through it! Even though I thought it was going to be a wet T-shirt contest there for a while. Good job on the brew. Looking forward to seeing the tasting vid. I'm sure it will be fine. Kinda thinking about the brewers' saying. "Even if you screw up you usually end up with beer at the end" 🍺

I ask myself what the hell I am doing multiple times during a brew day as well. ;) I am also just really glad you don't have super annoying music in your videos that comes in blasting loud when it plays so I have to turn the sound way down, and then I can't hear you when you talk. A lot of the other jabroni's posting beer vids do that and its kinda annoying. This is the first of your vids that I have seen. Good job. If you have 104% efficiency, something is measured wrong. Either you added more grain than you thought you did, or more likely, you probably need to recalibrate your refractometer (or just need a new one).
