I'm so surprised this is the first hammock in a van i've seen, & i've watched umpteen videos. While i'm not in a position to do this anytime soon, i've designed dozens of fantasy van layouts over the past several years & put hammocks in most. I love to cook & craft, so most of the space would be dedicated to that & a hammock instead of a bed seemed the solution. My favourite design turns it into beanbag type of seating by hooking both ends on the same hook & storing bedding inside.

dude America is truly the land of opportunity. I'm from UK and I'm so jealous as I've always wanted to do something like what you have done but living in this stifled country, well let's just say to live like that over here would be frowned upon. Plus GB is so small where could I go you can drive full length in less than a day. I envy you dude but your vidz are my escape so keep the content coming, peace.
@truthseek30177 жыл бұрын
Steven Mcmorn This is still frowned upon in America, just not as much as the UK. Some people will judge you as homeless if you live this way in the US, and you have to deal with police hassling you and waking you up if you park in the the wrong places. This lifestyle is extremely attractive though, you could travel constanly if you had a part time job on the computer.

What a strange comment? "Frowned upon"? I'm from the UK and I've been planning my van life for 2 years. Everyone I have told has asked if they could come with me...if I made a list there would be at least 20 people. They all think it's brill but many live the life of owning a home, having kids and just generally scared to leave the 'norm'. I think you'll find most people are envious as they don't have the courage. I've been told I've got balls - huge ovaries actually cos I'm female. I plan to do Scotland all the way to the top, Ireland, England (yes I agree not the most exciting place) then as the weather gets colder I'm going over to france to make my way over to Spain / Portugal. Even if it was frowned up on "ONE LIFE, LIVE IT" Other people's ideas of how life 'should' be should not effect how you live yours. Go for it, the community is growing! One day I'll do canada and USA, for now I'll settle for Europe....which I think is pretty awesome!
@sierrakientz24977 жыл бұрын
if you haven't already figured out your top load refrigerator situation ive got an idea for you. you can use your current fridge you just have to flip the compressor 90 degrees so that it is still in the same position it is now when you flip the fridge to be a toploader. just be careful not to kink any of the refrigerant lines coppers easy to bend. this method will work as described if of course it fits into the space you want it. save a lot of money on your new fridge since this ones already paid for. good luck and nice van!

I'm pretty sure after watching A LOT of van/car/bus living videos, your transparency about cost and living in it at first without building yet has made me actually make up my mind. A lot of the videos I have watched so far are people who sold their homes or saved for a while so they could afford to purchase and build and even have traveling covered. My husband and I are both college students who live paycheck to paycheck and do not have the ability to do that but I kinda wanna buy a van, live in it, and tough it out for a while to eventually build and make it a legit home but I felt unsure that my idea was practical... your video just gave me some hope. Now I just have to figure out how to store our house full of belongings or how to get rid of all of it. We only have 6 months left on our current lease. I wonder if we could make it happen before time is up. I want to move to the west coast in a van! Thank you so very much. I subsribed & hit the bell. Also, if you do happen to read this, something I am always curious about with these living situations is about your phone... lol. Do you have a cell phone? If so, what service provider is best to go with for signal and cost? Does it cost you much or how do you afford to pay it... maybe pay as you go or pay in advance?

I bought mine, in march actually, for $4,200. Though it goes under the moniker of a "Winnebago Warrior / Itasca Spectrum, 1983". It was essentially, that van. Except they cut the back off, pushed the roof up a foot and the back out a couple. Was supposed to get 13-16mpg. Got 4mpg when i received her and after some work (not finished) at 10-12mpg so far. Solid motors, solid chassis. I'm gutting and rebuilding the interior now. Your video is an inspiration. Thanks and see you on the road!

This is great and the editing is on par. I have a map I refuse to leave behind in my house. This is a great idea. My van is similar. Got it for 2,600 and then $250 for license plates and registration. Got a camping mattress for $20 and then memory foam for $15. I’ve found a lot of what I want to build into it from garage sales, thrift stores, side of the road. People throw away a ton of things. $4 propane Hillary stove! I’m keeping track of how much I pay or if I found the items, down to the tools. Got a $15 hammock a lot like yours. It’s really awesome to try to work out all the details and set up :) definitely a process.

I know it shouldn't be... but as functioning adults financial decisions rule lives indefinitely. Not trying to take away from the van lifestyle, or your van at all. It's just hard to understand putting large amounts of money into an investment that is going to eventually give out.
@kiikiiworld7 жыл бұрын
Well it's your house so you will actually save a lot of money. Paying for rent is probably more than a van. Plus it's your vehicle too so you can go anywhere so you don't need a car nor a house. If you're able to work while living in the van you will be able to save up huge amounts. So I really don't get your argument? no hate or anything. Am I overlooking something?
@iReturnV1deotapes7 жыл бұрын
When it gives out, can't you just replace the engine? And out of all the money you're saving, why would the cost be a problem? This lifestyle should pay for itself and then some if you do it long enough. I mean if you're working a slave wage at a menial job, you're still saving around a thousand dollars a month. Why would money be an issue? Everything about this lifestyle sounds like it would b one of the best financial investments one could make.
@RichardHarlos7 жыл бұрын
Neridfy_ wrote, "as functioning adults financial decisions rule lives indefinitely." That's a cultural norm, not an objective necessity. If you want what the dominant culture offers, then yes, you have to govern yourself by the values of convention that the dominant culture imposes. But, if you're interested in other things, then financial decisions need not rule your life. Think about it :) Peace.

Can I just say that I love the honesty of this video - with all the half-arsery and fuck-ups openly declared. I'm starting my own pick-up truck conversion soon - and whilst I'm not lacking completely in DIY skills, I can be a little haphazard. As a result I've been entirely psyched out, outfaced and overwhelmed by the technical perfection of other people's builds; forgetting that if I just get down to it with my jigsaw and screws I'll probably be just about OK. So thanks for re-grounding me, and reminding me you can achieve an awesome build even if the path there is a tiny bit rocky.

The lighting accents with all the natural wood look really classy actually. Really nice, but yeah you need to get a comfortable sleep system going on. Some RV's have this style of Fold out bed that actually comes down from the ceiling instead of folding out from the wall. Actually its how my loft bed is in my RV. In total it takes only about 5 inches of clearance away from the ceiling when it is "folded" up to the ceiling. If you found one at a junkyard you could probably take it off of an RV and bolt it to the ceiling in the van, granted you have some pretty stable points to bolt onto the ceiling/roof of the van. When you fold out the bed from the ceiling to sleep in it, it hangs about 2-3 ft from the ceiling, making it a pretty tight fit, but you can get a comfortable twin mattress up there, and plus you would be freeing up a lot of space on the ground inside the van, which is definitely at a premium. :) Best of luck

Consistently preparing healthy food in a cramped space without running water and a sink to clean will prove to be much more difficult than if you had a traditional kitchen. This will inevitably lead to poor eating choices, affecting your long term health. It also seems from the video that a profession is not a priority since you are talking about living "OFF THE GRID" for weeks at a time, which a traditional profession will not accommodate. This means that you are planning to live simply, intending to stretch your resources, living day to day. This is great until you realize that you have not prepared for your retirement. Your older body will not be as resilient when sleeping in a van and in the end you will hate the fact that you live... in a van. Your selection for a mate will be greatly reduced, seeing that most women will not want to live in a van with you or smell you after sleeping in a van that will be used "OFF THE GRID". Since you are not thinking for your future it looks like you expect me to pay for your health care, food and housing in your old age through my tax dollars because you wanted to live out your dream in a van down by the river. You can thank me ahead of time if you like.
@bryan5397 жыл бұрын
Buddha Palm Well, he asked why. I didn't start off just saying it was a bad idea, I complimented his work because I wanted to keep my dream crushing real world point of view out of it.... but then he asked. If giving an honest answer to the follow-up question is going to make you hate me then you sure must hate a lot of people. I would reconsider using the word "hate". That should be used VERY rarely.

Bryan Bennet you are making way too many assumptions on this guy's life. Not everyone needs to work a nine to five in order to support their materialistic wants/needs. If you can get by with all that you need without having to slave away working a "real world" job, I say that is awesome. I hope he gets to do this as long as he intends to.

That's really cool but you should put glass over the map

I used Lexan, It's a polycarbonate. Glass would crack and be really heavy

I was reading about Lexan vs acrylic. How has your Lexan floor held up? Is it still in pretty good shape? I just love your map floor, I haven't seen anything like that!

Hi Dylan. i don't know if you are gonna read this. i got a lot of questions. im just gonna start with two. here's the first question: how do you earn money? for your food, car maintenance, gas, basic needs, etc. 2nd question: how did you bring your audiences in your channel? i also make mini documentaries but it seems like not many people get to engage.

Probably not. I don't think people make good enough money off youtube to sustain themselves till they get quite a bit up there.

And people told the boss of the swamp his ice box would never work without fans and his corduroy road would never hold up and guess what. He dident listen to all the experts and both things he built work great. This is on that same level. Why not compliment him instead of pretending like your an expert and pick out all the things you would do differently. If you are an expert whats the name of your auto collision company that way when my car has problems i can take it to you and you can fix it since your such a expert

Same van, mine is 1986 g20 6.2L diesel, I paid 4200 for mine on credit with 108k miles. I can almost stand up in mine. But my advice to you since you gave me some. Invest in a memory foam. I paid 300 for my full sized tempurpedic foam 3" cooled matress and I lay it on the original fold out bed. Trust me, it's worth it. Every penny. Will throw you a follow on Instagram and good luck!

probably a stupid thought, but why dont you just flip the freezer on its back to make it a top loading fridge.
@bernadettesandoval39907 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing. Then the cold air won't "fall out" whenever you open it!
@MartyBacke7 жыл бұрын
Because the compressors that cool the freezer are designed such that they can only operate in one orientation, otherwise they break.
@michaelosmon7 жыл бұрын
Bernadette Sandoval all due respect, this is my perspective; the fridge's contents will retain their core temperatures for a substantial period of time with the door open. Also, the entire job of the refrigerator is to produce cold air, so even a few minutes with the door open isn't a measurable issue. Unless you're running on batteries. And also I agree that the compressor has oil in it - changing it's orientation will destroy it. The compressor is the most expensive component of that refrigerator

Spendid advantures. I just spotted a video today as you popped up as a suggestion. Glad to learn about you. I live in Puerto Vallarta in the winter months and come back to the US during the summer to travel in my 5th wheel RV. Not the same thing, but my heart and spirit are with you. I must say, get into photography and post to Flickr as it's less fleeting. You're doing what I always wanted to do. Thanks for doing that and sharing. Stay happy. I will hopefully cross your path or vice-versa and hear some of your stories. I'm following you here, keep on keepin on.
