HBHBHB is my favorite record of all time. The brass section utilized throughout most of the album adds a warmth and depth that is incomparable. Also, I have a theory that the toxic relationship serving as the basis for most of the lyrical content is her relationship with alcohol. I know Florence entered recovery in 2014 prior to this album being released. Amazing how the lyrics can apply in the context of any sort of toxic relationship.

HBHBHB and Delilah continue to be fav tracks of mine on this album. Along with Third Eye and Saint Jude. I just love this album in general. There hasn't been anything Flo + The Mac has put out that I didn't love. If you haven't already you should give the self-titled Kimbra album a listen, and one of my top 5 Christmas songs Florence and Billy Bragg's cover of Fairytale of New York.

In delilah there’s a reference to Samson pulling the pillars down wrecking everything on everyone’s head including himself.. that shit is too deeeeeep

@@anujjain1682 basically Samson was a strongman. God gave him super strength me had him dedicated from childhood. There was a condition tho: he wasn’t allowed to cut his hair. He did some magnificent shit(used a jawbone of a donkey to kill 1000 men and slaying a lion with his bare hands) but alas, he was still human. As an Israelite, he’s not allowed to marry a Philistine(one of their enemies), but he falls in love with one anyhow. Her name is Delilah. His parents advise him against it but he follows his heart. Turns out she was actually hired to find his weakness. Twice she tries to get him to reveal it and each time he lies to her so that she sells him out and he ends up being able to escape the hands of his enemies. He (somehow) still goes back to her(personally this part of the story was always very crazy to me. Like, your girlfriend tried to sell you out twice and you still agree to lay in her lap? Again??) Anyways, he tells her it’s his hair eventually and she (obviously) sells him out and it works (wow, shocker). She cuts his hair and calls the Philistines and they capture him and gouge his eyes. They chain him to two pillars in their party house and use him as entertainment (a dance monkey). In this time, he prays to God to restore him some of his strength so that he can destroy his enemies. His hair gradually grows back a bit and one day, he feels his strength and he puts his hands on the two pillars and pushes with all his might. Naturally, the house comes down and he “kills more of his enemies that day than in all his lifetime”

@@secluded_little_spot I've always reckoned that Samson and Delilah was used by Florence as a metaphor for the toxicity of the relationship(s) she was in, and of which she built HBHBHB around. So much of the album is being broken and still trying to come crawling back to the person who may not be the best one for you and just growing ever more destroyed afterwards - just like Samson still crawling back to Delilah after she's hurt him several times.

@@cainyourkids I...had never considered it. I guess because they're Bible stories i never once considered them in a more than one-dimentional light. Samson being stuck in a toxic relationship is actually a genius explanation and makes the song Delilah make a whole lot more sense. Thank you! :)
