This video is a crash course that will help you start oil painting today and create great art tomorrow. What stops most people is doubt, they anticipate the problems so much that they get discouraged before they even start. In this video, I want to show you that every difficulty that you might face in the beginning has a simple solution and I’ll try to give you all the keys to have a good start and paint with confidence.
So, the structure of this tutorial will be very specifically focused on beginner problems : instead of going step 1, step 2, follow my lead etc. I’ll start with questions or problems that I’ve seen in the community or that people have sent me and I’ll try to bring simple solutions. One problem = one solution !

I am an artist living and working in France. I learned the techniques of the Atelier of the Nineteenth century and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. For sketching in, I've been using watercolor pencils instead of regular colored pencils or graphite. The regular ones have a wax binder that can be dissolved or lifted off by some oils, solvents and mediums, especially if you're starting your first layers very lean. Watercolor pencils are not shifted by oil paint products and the lines can even be softened a bit with a damp soft brush before the oil paints go on. They are particularly good when painting on wood or mdf panels.

Best advice and tutorial ever. I wish I would have known all this years ago. You just convinced me to go back to oil - from the water soluble mediums. All of my issues were addressed in this short video. You are a very good teacher. As a pharmacologist - turned environmental health consultant, I can say that, if people are concerned or sensitive to chemicals, they can take N-acetyl cysteine to help rid the body of toxins. The body uses cysteine directly and also by making glutathione from it to detoxify. This is basic biochemistry. Exit strategies like epsom salt baths or saunas or any kind of sweating.helps excrete them from the body. Many other strategies, but these are basics. Thank you.

The one addition I would recommend is 'Look at a section of your finished painting and ask "how can I improve this area next time I paint something like it?"' I recommend it should be the best section of a painting. It forces us to be honest with ourselves and encourages us to improve each time. We can come back later and compare paintings, see improvement and be delighted that progress is made. The result is realizing that we just painted better than we ever thought we could, and now get to improve again by asking the same question. I love that you picked a 'simple' subject. Nothing like a perfectly round object to make an accomplished artist upset that its not as round as it should be. Other 'complex' shapes are so much easier to make look right.

I had done about 2 months beginning painting before I found this channel. I did buy both the Course and the Color Theory courses. It got me so much more organized! I know it saved me months and months of figuring stuff out. I had 17 units in drawing oil painting and watercolor over 20 years ago. None of this stuff was actually covered. I’m not kidding. 101 and 102 type classes in Jr College. We did have a lot of hands on and I will remark one class explained the variety of colors involved with actual whites. We did do a sphere to capture complications of all shadows.

Really like your videos, Florent, and your summary of learning. I think people generally mistake 'Talent' with an eagerness and willingness to try. For instance. With my siblings, when we sat drawing as children mine were viewed as slightly 'better,' I liked the praise and that made me practice to get better. My other siblings were naturally a bit 'better' at sports and science. The encouragement this got them made them work harder and enjoy these subjects more. There was no real prodigious talent there in the beginning and nobody really noticed the effort we were putting in until it made us above average. Then it was looked at as natural talent. The truth is, I think, any of us could have gone in another direction and developed a 'talent' for it.

Regarding the odour issue, I think the biggest problem is that for many people it just isn't practical in their home to have a well ventilated room for regular oil painting. It often ends up stinking the house out no matter how much you try to shut it away - plus if it's a small room in a house, it probably only has one window, so no through-draft (you can't have an internal door open). Many people are left with doing it in the garage or shed, but in many countries it's too cold for half the year to really do that. So in the end, from an amateur point of view, many end up just going down the path of water colours/gouache/acrylic for personal hobby painting. Ideal world, we'd all have a nice little studio attached to the house, heated but also well-ventilated with a proper cross-breeze.

Okay, I am an artist , multi-mediums, draw, paint, multi-instrumental musician, photography, sculpture....if it is art, I am in to it. I have been a musician for over 35 years and have invested tens of thousands of hours into being the best Me that I can be musically. That being said, painting is my newest "thing" and I am less than 500 hours into the journey. I have created and sold a dozen worthy pieces (and have given away three times that).....I should've just stuck with the music...I digress! I am trying to find my "niche" but have hit "artist block". So, I'm facing a really weird issue and it's driving me INSANE. I have no idea what the problem is and it's getty very discouraging. Below are the issues I THINK might be causing my pain. I'm (attempting to) paint using Alla Prima method. Brushes: I wash my brushes with dish soap and water when I'm done with them. Afterwards I can't get my paint to come off my brush to save my life. I have to REALLY load it up with paint to get it to work...but, then paint gets all chunky and goopy. Is it possible that I'm not getting all the soap out of my brushes? Paint Thickness: Some of my paint is MUCH thicker than other colors. My Black paint is roughly the consistency of refrigerated margarine soft spread. It's very thick. I tried adding Boiled Linseed Oil to the paint, but it doesn't seem to help much. Canvas: I'm using some super cheap canvas I got from Hobby Lobby. I'm not super worried about the Canvas being the problem, since my very first painting (which turned out pretty good) was on cheap canvas. Liquid White: I don't know if maybe I'm using too much, or two little? I know the "finger print" test but that can be misleading as you can pass the "test" with a VERY thin layer of liquid white. I've been trying to experiment with different amounts, but still struggle getting paint to come off of the brush, and onto the canvas. This makes me tap-tap-tap-tap until I'm basically left with colored blobs and a brush that's still full of paint. Any assistance folks could offer would be GREATLY appreciated.

But I paint in acrylics because it DOES DRY FASTER. You can ALWAYS paint "over" dry areas for correction, which is what I do all the time. I don't like OILS because of the fact that they take FOR EVER to dry... plus ALL those "smelly" solvents you have to deal with, and "more" clean up. PLUS my apt. is too small for all those smells. Florent do you ever paint in acrylics? If so, which do you prefer better, oils or acrylics, and why?
