A Successful Experiment, Finally!

Hi folks - thanks for all the comments, it's been a pleasure reading through them and seeing your enthusiasm for these tests. It's always a great feeling when there's a response like this. I know I don't ask... well, I've never asked, but I spoke to my YT manager, (yes I have one), and she told me that likes on videos do genuinely really help, so if you could leave a like I'd be immensely grateful! Secondly... if there's any more tests like this you'd like to see, or something different, or if you have any interesting ideas, I'd love to hear them! You could try the metal shavings with an indigo or violet glace to make a bigger contrast that could look great

I have a tip I've learned from being a lazy baker, which might apply when mixing glaze. Typically the smaller ingredients are more sensitive to variance in amounts, so you may find yourself fussing over getting every last speck out of the measuring vessel. Assuming you use the same measuring vessel for several ingredients, you start with measuring the smallest ingredient, pour out, tare, measure the next smallest, and so on, until the largest ingredient. This way every last bit of the smaller ingredients gets included, and the amounts that are included in the mix are very close to what you measured.

The original colour is so punchy - I mean, in theory, I could simply mix a whole batch of clays with colourful stains and fire them in my electric kiln, it's the reduction firing that causes some clays to dull down, but that would require a lot more testing! Maybe a future video series?

Thank you for the warning about the respirator. Ive been involved in both automotive and hobbyist painting communities for a couple years now, and the amount of guys that will tell their viewers to use something incredibly toxic, without so much as a warning that theyre recommending life-threatening chemicals, is absolutely jarring.

The comment about cleaning up looking like a murder scene reminded me of my first week working at Sherwin Williams. The bottom of a gallon of red tint exploded in a shaker. A few drops of pigment colors an entire gallon of paint and IT. NEVER. DRIES. Being the newbie, I was tasked with cleaning it up. My boss had a very good picture of me laying against the shaker after hours of scooping, wiping, sponging, and there's still a huge puddle of red around me. I was knee and elbow deep in red and looked like *I* was the murder victim. Everything I was wearing had to be trashed 🥲

I like the amount of fillings in these. It makes them look like they are made of metal that has oxidized / aged to an old and pitted state. Very nice I tend to like blues and greens but this red combination is great.

I personally really like the reflective properties of the glaze, though I think a smoother finish would make it more luxurious, maybe use finer or powdered bronze filings 😊 I think it’s a definite winner 👍❤

Really cool. There is a certain farmhouse/homestead aesthetic here in the US that would absolutely lose their minds over these. I noticed one thing with your bucket and your ingredients when mixing. You can try sliding the lid onto the bucket to close it off and that will reduce the amount of fine particles getting loose. Uses the same principle as controlling a grease fire in a pot. By sliding the lid on you are disturbing the air less inside the container.

Wow, I really like how that clay body and glaze worked out together. It's clear that the camera doesn't really capture what they look like to the eye. When you install them for exhibition it would be nice to get some good photos of these.

Lovely. I have intensely light sensitive vision, and for me, those pots came out looking almost purple, One of my favorite three shades as a matter of fact. A beautiful gunmetal iridescent purple. Like the rainbow film on a droplet of oil that has been spread just right across the surface of metal. And yet, I also still saw the beautiful contrast of the high iron red ceramic an the bronze! Truly Lovely!

The reflective surface works super well when they are lined up next to each other at the end of the video. The differently angled surfaces makes the light play very pretty. Also very interesting how different it looks with white and blue backgrounds.

Your discipline is really inspirational and has improved my craft considerably in the short time I’ve been practicing. Your geometric expression have a very personal touch to them. You can feel the focus that goes into those proportions, which makes each pot very much of your hand. For this round, what wonderful clay and glaze. Shockingly beautiful. I wonder if you can give more clear stage to each of the actors. The clay and glaze as quite harmonious but at the same I’d love to see each celebrated individually. As is, they are freaking gorgeous. These are just musings of someone who wishes he had the space and skill to explore this medium as you are. Regarding the metal particles, maybe explore different size particles as well as volume of particles. Maybe exaggerate the variations of particles will add more intrigue without over speckling it? Please keep making!

The red clay and steel and bronze inclusions videos where the first videos I saw and why I started following. I had completely forgotten about them and I didnt realize they werent that long ago. Great to see a follow up. I was completely stunned by the finished result. Theyre gorgeous. I wasnt at all expecting the specular 2 tone effect and the overall metallic shine. It really turned out wonderfully. I like how reflective they are, it gives an interesting interaction between the piece and the environment that speaks to me. The spiral blending would definitely be to my taste if that was ever something you ventured into. But i can see why not.

i love how this combination of glaze + bronze spotting looks almost cosmic, especially when you place them on a lighter, reflective surface. they really land in a brilliant middle ground between resembling the naturalistic (tree bark, etc) and the futuristic (through the metallic, meteoric quality they take on, combined with the precise minimalism of the forms)! fantastic work as always!! :)
