I'll confess that I laughed when your bowl went splat because it took me way back to when I took a beginning pottery class. The very experienced instructor was demonstrating a large bowl for us, which was supposed to be our final project for the class and his went splat just like that. There was a split second of shocked silence before he burst out laughing and just said, "Well, now you know it really does happen to the best of us!" In the end it was actually a good thing for nervous newbies to see. Also, the true mark of an excellent artisan is not that he/she doesn't make mistakes, it's that he/she understands what went wrong and knows how to either fix the mistake or prevent it from happening again if it cannot be fixed. These videos show us exactly how talented you are!

I would love an angular, low profile kyusu for green teas or a very angular gaiwan with a lid. On the gaiwan, I think your style is very complimentary to traditional gong fu and this would be a great time to practice throwing off the hump. The objects are small and you would need to throw quite a few lids and bowls to have a high rate of success. Feathering the lip so the gaiwan pours well is also difficult because there's a skill with pouring from a gaiwan.
@ElHuesudoIIАй бұрын
I second the gaiwan suggestion. I'd love to see how Florian would tackle a lidded cup meant for straining with his design style, and honestly, I'd love to own a gaiwan with a foot as defined and sturdy as the ones he makes, my gaiwan is flat at the bottom and slightly rounded so I always fear I'll set it back down wrong and spill everything...

Omg this reminded me of the times I got so frustrated from my thrown pots that I threw them to the wall and ceiling. I just out of nowhere one week, couldn't make a thing despite everything going well for months. Also I never thought about it but I'm glad now my heat gun is to the left and my pedal to the right hahaha. PLEASE make a moon jar, that's been my goal since I started pottery this year and I'd love to watch you try. I've made many 3lb,5lb ones

I have watched so many of your videos over the years and I'm currently reading your book. The feeling of frustration that comes with failure is really hard to bare. However, failure if reflected on thoroughly really is a brilliant teacher. I love hearing your reflections on things that don't go to plan. I think more than any of your tips on techniques and processes the most valuable thing I have taken from your videos is how great an impact taking your time to really think and reflect can have on your future success. Also, I wouldn't mind hearing a rant on moon jars! 😆

So glad you had your camera on for that epic collapse. I've never seen one fly like that. There's some justice in knowing that very experienced potters have stuff like that happen just like the rest of us. I totally agree on the quality of trimming tools and the capability of the potter. I have been throwing for 12 years and I just recently went back to my very basic set of tools and have stopped using all the fancy ones that I've spent a fortune on while thinking that the better the tool the better my skills would become. It's nice to have a special tool but the basics work wonderfully well.

I bought a tungsten trimming tool two years ago, as a low intermediate potter, expecting it to be magic. Instead I was surprised to find I simply couldn’t hold it steady enough (yes, with grogged clay) to avoid a lot of chatter. At low speeds the chatter is simply annoying, but when I got the wheel going faster it creates a wonderful deeply undulating and progressing pattern. It’s become one of my favorite chatter tools, for all the wrong reasons I guess.

this bowl is beautiful. I know that I want to comment to say that on every single one of your creations, but seeing this one, and the frustration that went it it, looking at the end result I would not have know that it was anything more than a joy to work. About a year ago you worked with glacier porcelain to make a jar that was near translucent. Would you consider working with it again? It is a departure from what you usually do, but I am wondering what that would like like with the glazes you are currently using.

Remember, in Japan ceramic artists practice the idea that ceramic pieces are worth more by being used. I’m sure that tools to make these utilitarian pieces are included in this practice. Remember that perfection in you work is impossible just like in life itself. As you get older this will come easier to you.
@gahorowitz13 күн бұрын
Florian, do you ever turn over a bowl and throw a pedestal foot from a coil, instead of trimming a deep foot from a lot of clay? I guess that technique isn’t really conducive to your angular style but curious if you’ve ever made it work for you.

What if you did things you normally would stray from? I don’t mean for you to abandon your craftsmanship, I mean take a more loose approach to the throwing process, allowing for more subtle mistakes, experimenting with strange angles/asymmetry. Couple that with some of the drastic glazes you have, and it’s the anti-Florian pot!
