How much power will this SSP Fox Body Mustang make?
The Mustang SSP stands for "Special Service Package" and was a special edition Mustang created after a special project for the California Highway Patrol in 1982. In the early 1980s, the CHP reached out to Ford to test the Mustang as high-speed enforcement vehicles. After a rigorous 18 month test of the 1979 Chevrolet Camaro, the California Highway Patrol chose not to utilize the Camaro as part of their fleet and make the Ford Mustang police car official.
Florida was second to use the SSP Mustangs starting in 1983 continuing through 1993.

Hey there AJ. I don't know if you may have heard of this urban legend I read about back in the mid 80s in one of the muscle car magazines I rabidly collected. The story was in the letters page with a photo of a car in a back lot of a junk yard. It was in Texas and the car was a flat black Plymouth Superbird. It looked sad and had plexiglass covers in place of the pop up headlights. Supposedly it was used by the Nevada State Police in the 70s and was purchased at a state auction. A couple issues later a man wrote that he was a retired NSP trooper who patrolled in the car, high speed pursuit and transporting crucial documents/evidence between jurisdictions. I've been trying for years to confirm what I read some 40 years ago. From what I read the car was called the Blackbird, like the SR-71. Supposedly the trooper pulled over a Ferrari Daytona canon balling from Las Vegas to California doing 140. Caught him in 7 miles from a dead stop. Even if this is a myth it is pretty cool.

Bought first year 5.0 H.O. in maitland Florida auction 1500 in 1990 ,flipped it for 2500 after a little work on it my 2 year old son use to love going do burn outs in the orange groves with me around Eustis where we lived ,man he's 34 now damn how time flys.

I had pre 03 p71 steelies on my car. I recommend them on all 5 lug foxes. The 03+ have a different offset.

I had a 93 GT set up fairly similar w/ a few more mods, stock bottom end, trick flow street heat kit, bbk longtubes and 3.73 rear gear. Never dyno'd mine butt it was professionally tuned/dialed in. I'd say it was about 340-350 wheel hp, 350 torque. It was a pretty stout car. I beat just about everyone that challenged me, even hung pretty well with a 600cc older (Suzuki or Yamaha I believe) crotch rocket.

They're 5-lug take-off wheels from a Crown Vic Police Interceptor. Check your local online marketplaces or even eBay to see if you can find a set for sale. -Landan

Actually that paint job is against the law in Florida as well, you can not paint a car in the same color scheme and colors as a Florida Highway Patrol car, that law was passed several years ago. I am a retired FHP Trooper and I drove a 1987 and a 1989 Mustang patrol car.

A buddy of mine had a 1990 FHP. It had a completely stock motor with the heads & intake manifolds Extrude Honed. He kept the stock cam & added a Pro-M 77mm Mass air. Threw in a Tremec 5 speed & 3.73 gears. MAC equal length shorty headers with a 2.50" off road H pipe bolted to DynoMax Super Turbo mufflers (real quiet). On 8" slicks it went 12.70 @ 110mph all day. It made a few $$ back in the day on the street scene.

A quick story. I always wanted a notch fox body. Almost had one, an '88, 5 speed. Black with an obnoxious red interior. My Dad was going to cosign my loan for about $14k. It was a go until he came with me to the dealership. The salesman took us out for a test drive so Dad could check it out. Went great until Dad asked the salesman how fast it was. The salesman should have known to fudge it. Dad said absolutely not. Ended up with an '88 Escort GT. Same price. Years later I was driving past a local Lincoln/Merc dealership and spotted a black notch back. I pulled in to check it out. Grey interior, check. 5 speed, check. 25th Anniversary badges......hmmm. Window sticker. Troop B of the New York State Police? Definitely never made it to the motor pool. $17k. Gone within a week and I never went in to ask why it was on the lot. Awesome ride here. 😎🤘

Ah the SSP ! Near and dear to my old heart, I’ve been lucky enough to have three of them. An 85 four eye undercover car, a 92 former CHP Coupe, and an 87 FHP Coupe that looked EXACTLY like this one. Miss them all, so thanks for sharing the coolness with everyone !!!

For my money would it have been easier and less time consuming just to through on a centrifugal supercharger package? Paxton, Vortec or vortex I forget the names it's been awhile. Thats alot of work and time what was done to get 260 to the wheels. If I'm wrong please let me know. I remember the kit used to come with larger injectors and it could be gotten with a intercooler if wanting to spend the extra money.

My 89 fox gt is a stock 5.0 and feels so peppy with the t5 swap. Its crazy how a 220 hp car can feel so good. I need this 257hp. I bet it feels like a rocket

The magic that you're feeling is the torque that a V8 produces and the sound. Sounds faster than it is.

They have 225 flywheel stock but put down about 185 through a 5 speed. Yours likely isn't doing 220 without intake and full exhaust or something basically fbo. The heads cam and intake are big restrictions get a decent set of heads and a decent intake and cam (and springs) that can make good power to 6000 rpm or so they will gain alot of power stock they fall off past 5000. It's the weight of the car and the torque that makes them feel so good they're quicker than you'd think just looking at the hp figures.

High on hp low on torque I thought it might see 280 guess I was expecting too much from those untouched gt40p heads. A good set of heads would have prob seen 280 with the same cam and intake.
