While LMR specializes in 1979-present Mustang parts, many of our employees are big fans of the classic Mustang. Scott Hubbard, LMR's lead mechanic, owns a couple himself. Today, we are dynoing his 1967 Shelby GT350 to see what type of power it makes.

The RWHP dyno numbers might seem low to the uninformed but remember a 2006 Mustang GT only puts down about 260 as well. A 1991 5.0 puts down about 190. The stock 289 hi-po this car came with maybe put down 200. They don't call dynos "heartbreakers" for nothing.

HIPOs weren't THAT weak..... Of course fully factory stock 500s of all versions (67-69) only put down @ 245 hp to the tires.... As per SHELBY himself during a magazine test of 4 cars back to back in early 90s. Shelby said... I told you so.

I owned a K code '65 FB Mustang and me and my Dad rebuilt and blueprinted (we were both aerospace Engineers at the time, my dad has since passed) the hipo 289 and at that time I added the Shelby aluminum manifold, Holley carb (we used an upgraded 650 Double pumper with mech secondaries) and Tri-Y headers. Amazingly it pulled 307 H.P. on an engine dyno, almost exactly matching the Shelby advertised power of 306 H.P. That is the same engine that came in the '67 gt350 too.

I remember an old Dyno run of THEEE 306hp 289 back in the day, and it had 223hp to the wheels. That would put it around 265 crank, and adjusting for the gross-to-net conversion, around 305 horse. Looks like Shelby wasn't bullshitting on the rating at the time. And regular k-codes put down around 195-200 wheel horsepower. Also coming out to around their rating.

Mmmm.............. My 1989 5.0 GT had AFR heads (165's) and a custom cut cam it made 324 hp at the rear wheels. Long tubes headers w/ cats for mufflers exited under the doors (natural aspirated) hate nitros. This GT350 must have a hydraulic cam . If that 67 was mine it do the same numbers as my 89 5.0. I betcha.

Wonder what the flywheel horsepower would be...approx. anyway? Any ideas? I had 4 years of Auto Mechanics Class in high school 1969 thru 1973. Man....that looks OLD when I type it. Oh well. My folks had (2) Ford 289 2bbl engines (rated 200 horse) in our family cars, and I overhauled the station wagon's motor (1966 Ranch Wagon) my senior year. I can still remember those relatively TINY ports in the heads. Back then the Chev 283 and 327's were just whomping ass on the poor little Ford 289's. I always wondered why such a big gap in performance between the 2....until tearing into Mom's 289. It HAD to be the lousy breathing and small valves...along with the cam profiles too. Evidently the bigger heads in this video's Mustang, as well as cam change....made all the difference. GREAT VIDEO! I'm subbed. joel in arizona

Dont get me wrong im a Ford guy till i die but this is why Dodge was the king of the street in the 60s and 70s the 426 Hemi made 420 hp (so dodge said) but it actually made on a chassis dyno in a challenger stock at 465hp dodge definitely lied about the numbers lol. But i mean only making 260hp out a v8 is kinda pathetic in my opinion if if had some better cylinder heads cam and a better flowing port matched intake it would make a world of difference
@jacobbondy1767
@jacobbondy1767 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe compare the Boss 429 to the 426 hemi to make it fair both are big blocks, both were advertised around the same power and both were close to being the same size the 429 was only 3 cubic inches bigger instead of comparing a 426 hemi to a 289 small block that just isn't fair
@midnight347
@midnight347 2 жыл бұрын
Its 289 cubes being compared to 426 cubes. Need i say more lol. For the old school setup it has and to be fairly mild these numbers aren't bad at all. The 9 inch and big heavy driveshaft don't help on the dyno. Ford did just fine in the 60s and they're still doing just fine today. They were rated different back in the day they were rated gross power meaning no accessories no exhaust straight headers and open carb etc. NOT the way they were sold to the public in cars. Put a big bad stock 60s 426 on the dyno while its in a car running all accessories and full exhaust and prepare to be disappointed. It won't make anywhere near 400+ in bone stock form. The quickest cars back then stock ran like high 13s at like 105 mph I seen a show where they tested alot of the best muscle cars from way back all stock. They weren't nearly as quick as everyone's old fish stories they tell lol. But then again high 13 at 105 in one of those death traps would feel pretty fast.
