Lawmakers in Tallahassee are taking action to address squatting. This comes after a loophole in the law that made it harder to evict unwanted guests than it would for lawful tenants.

...Because not all landlords are honest, and, because we have no overarching system that keeps track of who has a valid lease and who doesn't (and rent payments made), the law doesn't know when the problem is squatters or a landlord trying to skirt the eviction process. However, I *DO* think squatters should be charged with criminal trespass and held responsible for both back rent and ALL damages to the property before being set free.

You could even learn about it from a search on the internet. It really isn't outrageous when you consider the circumstances that gave rise to squatters' rights. It's not that they have "rights" its that they EXPLOIT laws that are designed to protect lawful TENANTS from horrible landlords. So, they squat in someone's house, CLAIM to be "TENANTS" by producing a bogus lease, and because the police cannot/do not have authority to determine the legality of that claim in that moment then it becomes a civil matter (owner has to prove in court they are not tenants) . So, they don't have rights...tenants have protection against unlawful eviction and these squatters exploit those laws.

Sadly, often times these squatters use the law in their favor or know how to do things that make it appear they legally own/rent the property. One of the tougher issues is that many places allow you to claim ownership or residency by having bills in your name or getting mail to the address (more just to make the process easier in case someone moves into a family members home or after the death of someone that the family or friend might want the home). However, you do sometimes run into the issue that the people inside the home is being scammed or have a legit reason/arguement why they are there. So that is why it usually a civil court case so a judge can easily hear both sides.

All these empty homes sit unused why rents go up and up and wages stagnate.. I would talk with neighbors to get information on empty homes, and many are empty for years or even decades. Older people are sitting on property, letting it go unused and abandoned while young people can't afford a home. The system is outrageous, and it will produce more problems like this until we decide to address root problems. Squatter are like coyotes, try to exterminate them and they will just increase and expand their range. Property owners rights are protected against Squatters. The owner notifies the Sheriffs Department. Proves ownership and that Squatters have illegally moved into the house they own. The Sheriff Department goes to home and does an immediate “Extraction”. Putting all Squatters possessions on street if they do not vacate immediately. This law makes more sense.

The will not take you to court because they know they will be locked up. Then you are done with them. Couldn't the owner change the locks? The ladies MUST leave the house sometime, that's when you pounce and change the locks. Turn off the utilities!

This needs to be law across the country. Although I'm curious what will happen to adverse possession. Not a lawyer but it might still be possible for this to work when the true owners of a property don't contest the "squatters." Which seems to be what these bad actors are exploiting

Great idea, be nice if all our states would do the same

About frikkin time. Treat it for what it is: theft of the house/apartment. Someone takes possession of your car without your permission it is a Felony, but a house, MANY times the value of a car is civil? BS. Thieves need prison

This needs to be addressed and laws made and changed across the whole USA. It is ridiculous that someone can just move into your property leaving you unable to evict them and they should each and everyone of the squatters that pull these stunts should get some serious jail time and should be evicted and arrested each and every time they pull this low life crap😡😡😡

LOL, I actually would never have that problem, because if I walk into my home and someone is in it that doesn't belong.....well let's just say I won't be having anymore problems. It's called protecting my property.
