Some years ago in St Louis there was one of those huge LEO funeral processions, it WRECKED traffic that afternoon. And I happened to be working as a delivery driver. There were so many police units from all over the whole state and even Illinois, there was actually police cars still leaving the cathedral AFTER the hearse and the lead cars had arrived at the cemetery, many miles away. So basically it cut that side of town in half for a while, just no way around it. And you know what? I saw a lot of people turning off their engine, and getting out to watch respectfully, people lining the sidewalks silently....it was a very touching thing to witness, and I was glad people seemed to take it well and be respectful. I had customers that were waiting two hours for parts they'd normally get in 15 minutes. None complained either.

Not really, it came from the attempts to "rationalize the language" from the 20s and 30s, which was adopted eagerly by marketing because at the time it seemed very progressive to spell words the way they sound. A lot of alternate spellings come from that era, like "cigaret" and "donut", etc. . It was never an official thing so a lot of them were developed by the advertising people. And that morphed into the "creative misspelling" fad that gave us Krispy Kreme and the like.

While working at my first PD still in FTO, I was blocking traffic at an intersection for a funeral procession. After a few minutes, a guy in the back of the line starts laying on his horn. I waited a bit for him to cease the fuckery on his own, but he was not letting up. I marched back to his passenger side window and asked him why he was honking. He said he had a kidney stone and needed to get home so he could pee in a strainer (he had the strainer in his hands.) I told him that he would not be able to get through here for a little while but if need-be he could turn around and go to the gas station less than 50 feet from where we were. He got mad that he would have to carry the strainer inside, saying it would be embarrassing. I provided condolences but advised there was no way he was getting through. He ended up squealing his tires as he turned around to go to the gas station.
